Sperm Donation Side Effects

Sperm Donation Side Effects

Sperm donation is a very noble concept; aimed at helping the childless couples to have their own children. A sperm donor undergoes many tests before he can donate his sperms. Though sperm donation has no effect on the health, but there are other side effects. Read on.

Just like egg donation, sperm donation had originally started as a very noble idea. The objective was and still is to create a condition whereby a couple dealing with infertility problems is able to beget a child. Sperm donation is a legal procedure and the rights of the sperm donor vary according to the law of the land. He is entitled to anonymity and is thoroughly screened for certain medical conditions before the sperm bank clears him as a sperm donor. Let us consider a few side effects of sperm donation.

The Health Factor –

There are no health risks for a sperm donor per se. When the clinic clears a man to become a sperm donor after an extensive screening, it means that his health is fit for the procedure. Usually men falling in the age group 23-34 become sperm donors. The fact that needs to be studied is that if a man donates his sperm for a certain period of time, whether the children sired by him subsequently, are born healthy. This requires further research and statistical evidence and can be thus considered as a side effect of sperm donation.

How Much Is Enough –

According to the laws of most clinics, a sperm donor can donate his sperm for the successful birth of not more than four children. This is to prevent the possibility of the children unknowingly committing incest. There is no way to keep track of who is sired by whom and whether they happen to get into relationships as they grow up.

The Social Factor –

Nowadays a lot effort is put in to give sperm donation a respectable and more socially acceptable process. Fertility clinics and sperm banks are present in almost every country, which means that sperm donation is a legally acceptable procedure. But you can call it as a side effect of sperm donation that there is a whole gamut of ethical issues surrounding sperm donation. With NGOs and clinics stepping up the awareness, sperm donation is viewed as a ‘procedure’ and ‘treatment’.

As far as artificial insemination is concerned, sperm donation is getting easy acceptance. But as a side effect of the procedure, sperm donors may not have an easy life in terms of personal relationships. This is more due to misconceptions and lack of awareness. But as studies indicate it has a lot to do with emotional issues. The wife or girlfriend of the sperm donor may give her consent, but it has been noticed in a lot of cases that the relationship undergoes a lot of strain due to this. Although awareness and counselling help, the donor might find it difficult to lead a very “simple” love life.

On the other hand, couples opting for sperm donation fertility treatment are often found to hold an adverse idea regarding the authenticity of the sperm donors. Although they know that donors undergo a lot of screening before they are allowed to donate their sperm, they have a hostile preconception. So despite the efforts and the noble intention of the sperm donor to help a childless couple experience the joy of parenthood, they can be viewed with scepticism compared to the egg donors. This can be a discouragement.

Dealing with Reality –

The necessity of ‘artificial’ means of conception like through sperm donation, are often questioned by the very children born through sperm donation, when they are made aware of the process of conception. There are cases, where these children or the spouse of the woman or the woman herself finds the process unethical and end up accusing the sperm donor.
