DAL DHOKLI - A POPULAR GUJARATI SUNDAY MEAL! Recipe
Snacks Recipe by reluctant_chef

 20 mints  2

  INGREDIENTS
Tur (arhar) daal
Wheat flour
Boiled peanuts (optional)
Shredded coconut (optional)
Oil
Ghee
Salt
Ajwain
Hing
Haldi
Dhaniya jeera powder
Boiled peanuts
Rye
Jeera
Dried red chillies
Corriander leaves
Kokum (or imli)

  METHOD
Boil the tur daal with some salt and haldi and keep ready. Wash and soak kokum in a bowl (if you don't have kokum, you can also use soaked imli)

For the rotis, take wheat flour in a pan, add ajwain, salt, haldi, red chillies, 2 tbsp oil and knead into batter. Make into thin rotis (they are more like theplas because of the masala added in the flour), and half cook them on the pan. Then dry them on newspapers for half an hour or so. And then using a knife make diamond-shapes pieces of the roti and keep in a bowl.

Now prepare the daal for the daal dhokli. Heat the daal again, add sufficient water and add chilli powder, dhaniya powder, gur (jaggery), soaked kokum, and peanuts (salt and haldi we're already added earlier). When the daal is boiling, add a spoon of oil to the daal (to prevent the Roti pieces from sticking together) and start adding the cut pieces slowly. Keep stirring so that they don't stick to each other.

Then heat ghee in a small pan for the tadka. First sautee some rye, dry red chilli, jeera and hing for about 30 seconds. Then add tomatoes and sautee for a couple of minutes. Finally take this tadka and add it to the daal with the dhokli which is still on the gas. Voila, your Daal Dhokli is ready!

Garnish with corriander leaves. On the table, serve piping hot, add shredded coconut, lemon and ghee for a fabulous taste!

(Note that for the dish to be authentic, it should be on the sweeter side. Also keep in mind that the roti pieces should be added just at the time when you are ready to eat. Else the daal becomes very thick as it cools. The daal anyway becomes thicker as the roti pieces get added, so it is better for the daal to be on the thinner side.)

A popular accompaniment to the daal dhokli is Theplas and Buttermilk. Rice can also added to the Daal Dhokli as a final course.

Yumm! Daal dhokli is one of my favourite dishes.
