High Blood Pressure
- Rishi Modi

1 out of 10 women run the risk of developing pre-eclampsia, which is pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, in the last weeks of their pregnancy. Latest developments suggest that increasing your intake of vitamins C, E and other antioxidants in the early stages of pregnancy, should help keep your blood pressure stable. It is also a good idea to monitor blood pressure regularly during the last few weeks of pregnancy, and if your blood pressure is high, consult your doctor. Here is what Rishi Modi had to say about his experience with pre-eclampsia.

"My wife delivered a baby boy on 1st June. I want to share with you some of the complications that we faced during the final month of pregnancy, which could have easily been avoided.

The first 8 months of my wife's pregnancy went off absolutely fine, and there was no problem at all. Suddenly, in the ninth month, my wife developed high blood pressure. She was put on medication for controlling her blood pressure, but it did not seem to help. Her pressure was constantly 140 by 110. It was a big concern for doctor, and she also started losing weight. She lost around 5 kg in her final month. I was very concerned, so I started reading books and surfing sites which provide tips on controlling blood pressure during pregnancy. What I discovered was, if only we had taken more care and precautions, we could have easily avoided this.

There were basically two major factors responsible for her blood pressure: one, she was not exercising or walking regularly, and two, her weight. She gained more weight than she should have, and we did not realise that the repercussions would be so serious. If we have monitored both these things right from the beginning, the high blood pressure could have been avoided. But now, it was too late to do anything about this.

When my wife went for an ultrasound in the 39th week, we discovered that our child's growth had stopped due to high blood pressure. In the 39th week a child is supposed to be 3 kg, but our child was just 2.4 kg. Finally the doctor decided to induce labour by giving my wife an injection, since she was overdue. However, this did not help either, and on 1st June 2003, the gynaecologist opted for a caesarean. My wife gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Our child is as yet too weak, since he had not been getting adequate nutrition due to the blood pressure. However, the good news is that both, my son and my wife, are perfectly alright now.

I would like to stress upon the importance of exercise during pregnancy. Do not take it lightly. Go for regular walks, and take care of your diet, salt consumption etc. DO NOT TAKE THESE THINGS CASUALLY, they do make a world of difference. I hope what I have written has had an impact on you, and will make a difference.

I hope might be my sharing will make a difference. For more information, email me at rishi_modi@hotmail.com. I would be happy to help out in whatever way I can."
