Tay-Sachs Disease What is Tay-Sachs disease Tay-Sachs disease is a genetic disorder
that affects Ashkenazic Jews, i.e. Jews of East European descent. It results
in fatal brain damage. The manifestation of this disorder will require
a matching gene from both parents. A random marriage of any two individuals
from this ethnic group has a 1 in 900 chance of uniting two carriers.
Thus while the parents may not be affected by the disorder, every child
born of such a marriage has a 25% chance of having the disorder.
