Symptoms of Allergies in Babies

Allergies in Babies

Read on to find out how babies are exposed to allergies, common allergies in babies and symptoms of allergic reactions in babies.

Allergies generally occur due to the over reaction of certain substances with the immune system. So when children or babies who are prone to allergic reactions get in touch with these substances that are known as allergens, the immune system of their bodies release something that is known as an antibody. This marks the beginning of an allergic response. Allergens can be anything starting from dust to peanuts and shellfish to pollen. Suppose your baby is allergic to pollen, his or her body recognises it as an intruder and causes the release of antibodies known as Immunoglobulin. As a result, histamine or other chemicals are released and hence starts the allergic reaction.

The Most Common Allergic Reaction in Babies

Allergic Rhinitis is one of the most commonly occurring allergic problems in babies. Symptoms associated with it include a constantly running nose and frequent sneezing and/or coughing. Children who are affected by Allergic Rhinitis are often reported to have watery eyes, dark circles and persistent hearing problems. Such allergies may also cause itching in the most unwanted places of the body such as the palate of the mouth, inside of the ears and the nose. Due to such symptoms, allergic babies are weary almost always.

How to Know if a Baby has Cold or Allergies?

Allergy Symptoms:

  • Thin and clear mucus, with frequent sneezes.
  • No Fever.
  • No itching sensation.
  • Persisting symptoms for over 2 weeks.

Cold Symptoms:

Symptoms of Food Allergies in Babies

Food allergies may appear very early, sometimes during the first few months of an infant’s life. Items that have been identified to cause food allergies include the likes of egg, soya and milk. Some small children also react to peanuts and tree nuts. Babies and children who are prone to food allergies experience allergic symptoms within a very short time when made to have food containing items that cause allergic reactions. Some of the most common reactions include hives, stomach ache with vomiting, rashes, difficulty in breathing, swelling in the throat and mouth and severe diarrhoea.

Symptoms of Anaphylaxis

If children experience severe symptoms in any of the two body systems (suppose respiratory and skin) it might point to the occurrence of anaphylaxis, which if not treated immediately can lead to harmful physical conditions. The most dangerous symptoms pertaining to the occurrence of this condition are problems in blood circulation and compromised breathing.

Ways to Deal with Allergic Reactions

The best way to prevent allergic reactions is to stay away from substances that cause them. Although quite difficult, make sure that your baby stays indoors from 10am to 5pm every day, to avert the possibility of an allergic reaction if he or she is allergic to pollen. In case your baby has been playing outside during these hours, make sure you change his or her clothes and wash the hair as soon as he or she returns. If your child is allergic to dust, avoid having wall to wall carpeting. In case you do, make sure that you vacuum it every week using a HEPA filter vacuum. To prevent food allergies, you must make an attempt to prepare a diet chart without including foods that contain even traces of items that trigger an allergic reaction in your child.

Allergies may be treated with the help of proper medication. However, you must always consult a paediatrician before resorting to such drugs. Normally, doctors prescribe different forms of antihistamines that curb the production of histamines (associated with triggering of allergic reactions) in the body which helps ameliorate the persisting symptoms.

Hi Vibha, I think you are confusing insect bit with allergy...you must show those red spots to your child's pediatrician whenever you see them.
