What can I expect from my first antenatal visit

Every gynaecologist has his/her own way of dealing with a newly expectant mother. But the first visit will be the most comprehensive visit you can expect. The doctor will make a thorough physical examination of you, discuss your complete health profile and family history (medical, social, gynaecological, obstetrical as well as personal). He will also determine your due date, check your symptoms and recommend a few tests. He might need to do an ultrasound too. Go prepared with a list of questions or concerns as this is also a chance for you to discuss your worries and fears.

What kind of tests are normally recommended

Not all tests are routine for every expectant mother. It depends entirely on the case history. The most common ones are:

Blood tests: to determine blood type and anaemia
Urinalysis : a screening for blood, bacteria, protein, sugar and white blood cells
Blood screens: to determine immunity to rubella
Cervical smear: to determine cancer
Gestational diabetic screening test: to determine a tendency in women who have earlier delivered an excessively large baby or had gained excessive weight
Tests for infections: hepatitis, chlamydia, AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhoea.
