Does your child have low memory power? Find out some skills and techniques to improve your child’s memory. Some children have a weak memory and find difficulty in remembering things. They have trouble memorizing lessons and other instructions. Children with low memory power often need extra attention and help from parents or teachers. These are some skills and techniques which parents and teachers can use to develop and
improve memory of kids. Using memory enhancing skills and techniques can be exciting for both you and the kids.
1. Breaking into Parts
If your child has to memorize many pages of a lesson, skit, or something else, break down the task into parts. This way it will be easier and less stressful for your child. Start with the toughest portions first.
Suppose your child has to solve 60 Math problems, break it down into separate parts and divide the task. First let him or her work on ten or fifteen problems, then give him or her a break. Let him or her first show you the answers of these ten or fifteen questions, only then go ahead with the rest. Taking such breaks and segregating the work will reduce the monotony and make his or her mind refreshed. It will help the kids to
concentrate and remember better.
2. Power of Repetition
Does your child keep repeating the same behaviour even though you have told him or her to not do it so many times? For example, you must have told him or her to not touch the shoes or ground with his or her bare hands because it is dirty, but you find that your child does not seem to remember at all and keeps doing it again and again?
One of the reasons children do not seem to understand rules and keep indulging in the same behaviour is because their memory is not fully developed as yet. In such cases, repetition often works. You need to keep reminding him or her and repeating it to him or her often so that he or she remembers.
3. Simplify Instructions
Children are often able to process and learn better when instructions are simplified. You have to teach them and explain things to them in easier ways so that they are able to understand and memorize.
Example - “
Complete learning the entire lesson and get ready for tomorrow’s test. Otherwise I won’t allow you to watch your favourite cartoon.”
This can be simplified to help your child understand better. A more simple and direct instruction would be – “
First learn your lesson, then you can watch your favourite cartoon.”
4. Adapt to Learning Styles
Different children learn in different ways. Some kids are able to understand and memorize better only when teachers or parents read out lessons slowly. You have to first try and understand your child’s learning style. Some kids are able to understand and remember instructions better when they are written down rather than just being told verbally. Some kids want lessons to be read out aloud for learning.
5. Categorization
Children love categorization and sorting stuff into different groups. Suppose, you are teaching children about the animal kingdom, it would be good to first segregate animals into different groups such as wild animals, domestic animals, etc. Categorization and segregation makes learning exciting, interesting and easier for them. They get more interested in learning and memorizing also gets easier.
Apart from these memory enhancing skills and techniques, there are other ways to improve and
memory power. Feeding children a nutritious diet comprising of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and whole grains can help in development of memory and
brain. Some examples of such foods which improve memory are - nuts, seeds, spinach, soyabeans, broccoli, strawberries, walnuts, and citrus fruits.
Some children are able to remember better when you show them related images and visuals to represent words or expressions. Memory development activities,
games and techniques are all useful to help your child learn better and recall information faster.
