Having well-developed legs is what long-distance runners are known for. Unfortunately, it tends to stop there. Keeping asymmetrical and balanced body has many benefits as you probably know. Most runners try to avoid carrying extra weight when they exercise. Most of the time, it all comes down to personal preference. It is so easy to avoid overuse injuries if you simply tone your upper body and add a little muscle mass. Simple body weight exercises will probably do if you don't want to add mass to your torso. The benefit is also found in the variety in your exercises that you will experience. Really, you're not going to harm your ability to run. You are actually going to improve your resistance to injury by doing them. Cheap NFL Jerseys Well-developed legs are usually found on long-distance runners. They are famous for them! But not so much with their upper body. There are benefits to keeping your entire body in a symmetrical and balanced state of development. Runners typically don't want to have a lot of weight to carry with them. Personal preference plays a large role in this decision. The more you build up, the less likely you will have overuse injuries because your upper body is in shape. Instead of adding serious mass, you could do toning exercises that only work with your body weight. You can add a little variety to your weekly training by doing this. Really, you're not going to harm your ability to run. You are actually going to improve your resistance to injury by doing them. NFL Throwback Jerseys

Why on earth is white skin considered beautiful in India? The girls at school put so much dark make up on that they end up looking orange, because the dark colour doesn't blend into pale skin. When i go on holiday, i never get a tan, i get burnt... and that REALLY hurts after that burn i just go whiter. I think we all want what we can't have!

I am dark skinned and so is my hubby and my kids. I have gone through this dark skin vs fair skin scenario for a very long time. But now i don't make the same mistakes my mother made with me to my daughter. She is a very beautiful girl. Though a large majority of people in the south are dark skinned , we pay no attention to the beautiful features of a person. This will change only when fairness creams are completely taken of the shelf and ads asking for fair skinned brides are not printed. look at the irony the ad on this page is for skin fairness.

Hello-I stumbled upon this site looking for beauty secrets. I thought your article was very good. I'm sad to say it is not only your culture that puts a premium on light skin. I'm of Mexican & American Indian heritage and dark. I've grown up with hearing many comments about my darkness. Funny thing, it wasn't until I moved to Virginia ( where people of my color were a minority) that I truly came to love how I looked. Well, I'm back home and I still hear the comments, but I don't care anymore. I'm happy with who I am : )

Why talk about dark being beautiful or go on and on about skin color at all? The more the parent talks and talks about skin color, the more it becomes an issue. Just forget skin color! We're all Indians, we're just made differently according to God's wishes. Just focus on the inside development of your daughter instead of her outer skin.

What is all these hulabaloo about skin color? It is all in the mind. Get on with your life, make the best of your situation, make money, live in luxury and enjoy your lives. Look up in the sky, how many colors do you see at some point in time? Let me tell you; white skies, grey skies, blue skies, red skies, yellow skies, dark skies; chose a color, it is all there. When the skies has such beautiful colors, why do you bother about what skin color you are? If the people of the world were just one skin color, how boring the world will be.

I know people who are lighter than me but still people are more attracted towards me!!! coz i have groomed myself in such a way that cant make me go unnoticed!!! We all can be beautiful.... It CAN be 70% of our contribution to look and appear good!!! I have had so many experiences!! I am proud of the way i aM!! And u all should be.. and if u are so serious about ur skin, lemme tell u that healthy skin is what glows... not with brightness, but with attraction ... no matter how light how dark, BELIEVE ME U CAN COMPLETELY IGNORE THE SKIN COLOUR AND focus on improving other aspects of ur persona!!!! Listen to ur heart and do not get disheartened because of the comments made by other about ur colour!!! TELL THEM THAT I AM HAPPY WITH MY LOOKS... I THINK U AREN'T ... THATS WHY YOU ARE JEALOUS AND POINTING OUT MY NOOKS!!!! ;) .... ANYWAYS PEOPLE - MAKE THIS YOUR MOTTO IN LIFE IF U ARE TOO COLOUR OR LOOKS CONSCIOUS - UR BODY, SKIN, WEALTH WILL ALL BE GONE ONE DAy, CHARACTER IS IMMORTAL... GO AHEAD AND IMMORTALIZE YOUR CHARACTER!!! NO ONE WILL EVER FRGET YOU!! I LOVE YOU ALL U CHOCOLATE SKINNED PEOPLE!!!!!! AND I HOPE U LOVE THE WAY U ARE!!! I am an African-American and blacks in the US are similiar to Indians with feeling that lighter skin is better. My grandmother treated my cousins, who have a "yellow" complexions differently from myself, who has a dark-brown complexion. I did not know that Indians demonstrated this type of system as well. I also did not know that people considered Indians as blacks. I do not think that Indians are black, but I do not like the fact that people use the word black as a "bad" term. I was not aware that this extreme predjudice still existed. It is very sad.

okay, so this is the last entry i am posting, because no matter how hard i try to explain this to you, you won't get it. firstly, you did say something about the class system when you said that indians put people in a different CLASS because of their skin color.i guess you just won't ever understand what i have been trying to say...when you say that all indians disriminate by the way that they talk about people, you are discriminating against indian people, cuz they don't all discriminate by way they talk about people. also, i am not indian...i don't know where you got that from...had i been indian, how would i have freakin' known about doctor phil, and stuff that goes on in america. also, as i had stated before, this is the last time i am posting on this site. you and i have differing views, and that's okay, that makes us who we are. i hope you understand that i just felt really strongly about this, and i just wanted people to accept one another. yours and my comments on this site are helping noone...that's why, i will stop posting. i'm sorry, if you feel that i am wrong...which you obviously do, ...however, i respect your views and, you know what, if you think indian people are rascist, then so be it. puffy, i have no clue who the heck you are...anyway, if you think i'm stupid then so be it....i don't evn know you, so unlike you, i won't discriminate against you. Have we not been over this already? I feel like i am talking to a robot. SOME indians discriminate based on skin color...likewise, SOME americans discriminate based on skin color, so do SOME Latvians, some Russians, SOME Chinese, etc. ALL indians don't discriminate based on skin color, unlike the sterotype, which you are putting forth, is suggesting. AND, if you are talking class system, i am beginning to doubt whether you truly went to India...Class system was an institution created centuries ago, which was a system of division of labor...it doesn't exist anymore...also, the class system had nothing to do with skin color....a person from South India, who might have pretty dark skin, could be in a much higher class than a person from North India, who might have lighter skin tone...and vise versa...therefore, IT WAS SOLELY A SYSTEM OF DIVISION OF LABOR...maybe you need to go back and read a 9th grade world history book...in present day, indians don't work on the basis of the class system...many know the class which their ancestors held, however, they DON'T base their lives according to that. LAstly, if you've ever heard that quote in the bible...where jesus is like : learn to spot the log in your own eye before pointing out the speck in your brother's...that totally, applies to you. You are repeatedly discriminating against Indians by suggesting that all Indians discriminate based on skin color...i hope you get that...if you don't i think you need to seek advice...or rather immediate help... from a proffesional...Hmmm...how about Dr. PHil maybe?

I apologize for offending you by calling you a racist when i don't even know you. it was wrong, and never should have happened. however, i comprehended only the english which you typed. Based on what i read, i got the notion that you have a discriminating attitude directed towards people of indian culture. A racist is one who discriminates based on race...not nessicarily skin color (even though that is often the case). From what you had written, it was evident that you had judged indian people based on limited knowlege. sure, you might have met a whole buch of indians, and maybe it seemed to you that they had stereotypical outlooks towards society. however, indians occupy a large sum (about one fifth, i think) of the world's population, and surely you haven't met them all. Racism is prevslent wherever you go...be it in America, where even children discriminate...sometimes against children of a differing background, and sometimes against each other even...don't tell me you haven't seen african american and caucasion kids discriminate against each other. Bottom line is that racism is unavoidable, and you cannot label a population of people as racist if you haven't met them all. tell me...have you met all indian kids born in America...cuz, i've met a lot of them....they aren't all racist. And, hopefully you will agree that your comments on this site, which is an attempt towards making young girls take a progressive step towards better accepting themselves, were very offensive. They offended me, at least, and unfortunately, i responded in a way in which i really shouldn't have. hopefully you will understand my approach. again..I am very sorry for calling you a racist, and ...well...I hope you have a great day! (and trust me...i know how to comprehend English)

talking about skin color and putting people into a certain class due to there skin color is racist, no two ways about it. Now here in the US indian kids born over here look down at folk that come from india. They actually refer to them as FOBS, which in the context it is used is a degrading way to look at another human being. What kind of people (indian kids born in the US) look down at people from where there parents probably came from, and trust me its. Maybe its the way indian people from india act, always talking about skin color, but i find all indians care about skin color. Now "the to you know what" learn how to comprehend english before calling me a racist.

i am from brazil, and i am very happy that brazil is a cosmopolitan country, super mixed, where people are just happy,i grew up there ,people don't talk about race or even backround ,its a country where once you are borned there you are a brazilian person , over there and you will always see a black brazilian, white, japanese look, every single ethnic backround !you will never see a group of brazilian hanging out with another person who is the same color, they are all mixed, and furthermore in brazil there's no such thing as speak black or white, dress like white or black or even have an area where most people are black or white because they want to feel comfortable with their own!!there was once slavery in brazil, but 1888 a portuguese princes named,ISABEl CAME OUT WITH A LAW CALLED (AUREA)and then the portuguese respected the law,i think thats what made the black in brazil not to be too bitter and just live their lives and don't feel like they are not welcome to that nation.unlike in america where they had to fight for their freedom .iam not making a point on this, its just history explains why each society acts differently!! many brazilians family are very mixed,as i am,portuguese, german and black!we don't celebrate black day ,white day, nothing like that,we are just one as whole!we have one of the biggest event on the earth for everybody relax and have fun, which is (CARANAVAL)!!come and check that out!!you will be totally welcomed in my country regardless you are white, black, indian, anything !!and my advice is that, once you are born in a country where people have different backround, there is white on the left, black on the right, and chinese in front of you,you should embrace it!thats your country!i know every country is different, but lets learn from each other!!

i am from brazil, and i am very happy that brazil is a cosmopolitan country, super mixed, where people are just happy,i grew up there ,people don't talk about race or even backround ,its a country where once you are borned there you are a brazilian person , over there and you will always see a black brazilian, white, japanese look, every single ethnic backround !you will never see a group of brazilian hanging out with another person who is the same color, they are all mixed, and furthermore in brazil there's no such thing as speak black or white, dress like white or black or even have an area where most people are black or white because they want to feel comfortable with their own!!there was once slavery in brazil, but 1888 a portuguese princes named,ISABEl CAME OUT WITH A LAW CALLED (AUREA)and then the portuguese respected the law,i think thats what made the black in brazil not to be too bitter and just live their lives and don't feel like they are not welcome to that nation.unlike in america where they had to fight for their freedom .iam not making a point on this, its just history explains why each society acts differently!! many brazilians family are very mixed,as i am,portuguese, german and black!we don't celebrate black day ,white day, nothing like that,we are just one as whole!we have one of the biggest event on the earth for everybody relax and have fun, which is (CARANAVAL)!!come and check that out!!you will be totally welcomed in my country regardless you are white, black, indian, anything !!and my advice is that, once you are born in a country where people have different backround, there is white on the left, black on the right, and chinese in front of you,you should embrace it!thats your country!i know every country is different, but lets learn from each other!!

If you think that light skin is prettier than dark skin or vice versa, remember it’s not a fact—just an opinion or preference. Not everyone likes or desires the appearance light skin and not everyone likes and desires the appearance of dark skin. However, it makes no sense whatsoever for anyone to consider themselves superior based on their skin color—it takes more than just skin color to make one superior. I don’t know about anyone else on this board, but I have seen people who are less than superior and who even conduct themselves as subhuman from all across the color spectrum including all social and racial backgrounds. Is a light complexioned serial killer that tries to murder you better than a dark complexioned serial killer that tries to murder you? If you find either one of these better, then maybe you should put yourself in the position to be the victim the next time to see which murderer slices you to pieces the best. I have come to the conclusion that people will always find some fault in one another whether it is over social status, color (light or dark), or anything else completely trivial or stupid. No matter how much technology/science advances or how much social relations improve, people will continue think like cavemen, the educated is not excluded. People will continue to hold old to the same stupid stereotypes and hatred (like it will make life any better) that will plague the earth like useless cockroaches and for what? To find something as trivial as skin color to feel better than someone else? How insane and sad is that?!

I just wanted to address one issue I read on this site and maybe put a little science into the discussion. The whole concept of light-skinned aryan conquerors invading a dark-skinned dravidian owned India is false. This was one of the many myths used by the British to hold populations in check. That probably casts to much of an evil shadow on the Brits as at that point in time everybody used classify races according to skin color. But the British did worsen the situation by pitting Indian populations against each other and by claiming that the aryans were superior because, after all, they succeeded in their invasion. The fact of the matter is that Aryans and Dravidians are both members of the Caucasion race. And in time, caucasion populations that live closer to the equator tend to have darker skin and grow slightly shorter. But they have the same exact genetic make-up as populations from the north. In essence, scandinavians and tamilians are the same people, but they look different do to their environment. Case in point, my wife is from Andhra and when she is exposed to hotter southern climates her skin can get quite dark. But a few months after she goes north her skin will lighten to the point that she can pass for southern European.

Oh forgot to say one last thing..we shouldnt even be arguing about such a topic coz...everyone's idea of beauty is their own...whats wrong with tanning or bleaching? NOTHING..if anyone of any skin colour wants to do it they're doing it for THEMSELVES..its not WRONG 2 try anything to get tanned or be fair..ppl maybe like to experiment with different looks u know??? but make sure w/e skin u have u take care of it..wash it daily..give it ur inner glow..etc coz in the end like i said..if ur naturally ugly ur ugly no matter what...nothing whatsoever u do will make u "pretty" fair or not fair.. P.S: Once again thank God ur not a nigga HAHAH i know i mite sound selfish but i know most of us whether we like to admit or not are secretly glad we;re not NIGGAS..i juss say it out loud directly ;)

hi hah what a controversial topic...well..it doesnt have to be a controversy if u dont let it..i think "looks" matter most??? if ur light (or) dark and have exotic looks you are considered for your beauty...colour is a part of it..and ugly ppl come frm all countries, shapes...colours..etc..but honestly to tell u the truth, if there is a beautiful gurl and if u consider all the skin colour ranges frm darkest to fairest, then her beauty MULTIPLIES with the fair skin esp if its flawless and smooth, soft..etc etc..no disagreements, we all agree with tht subconsciously dont we? doesn't have to be as white as snow..but if u already have perfect looks n body n are very beautiful, being fair is a BONUS..i am fair, have brown hair hazel eyes..5'8 and a teenage gurl (i dont look like my family at all) who started doing amateur modeling work..and let me tell you most dark gurls are not even in demand unless they are exceptional(this is among "beautiful" fair/dark gurls) and by saying dark i mean BLACK coloured ppl..not brown indians..tell me honestly..i have more WAY more beautiful non-black ppl thn blacks (africans) i find blacks very ugly looking..big lips, violent (have the most crime rate here in North america), stupid dropouts frm skool...etc..u cant even see them in the dark LOL, even if they're a "lighter" shade of black (whatever THT is) they're still clearly niggers and have the features...so most of u indians tht are bit dark brown should be thanking God tht He didnt make u niggers..or else no bleaching cream in the world would work HAHAHAHAHA

We will forget that we need to be dark or white, or whatever. Let us criticise the westerners and lugh at them because they want to get tanned. Ignoring these kind of social things can only bring change.

To the "white" girls, Sara and Cindy who think you're something special. You're not. Indians are of all colors and though most of us are shades of brown. If whites think we are black then that is their perception. I could care less what they or you think. I grew up in the US and in Far East. besides travelling to all the major US cities, I've been to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul and there are girls in those places who are pure milky white in color not pink and beefy red like the "white" girls in the US and UK. So you are hardly the only "white" people in the world. There are also many fair skinned people other parts of Asia including northern India. Oh, I notice that white guys in the US and in Asia love the "China Dolls" not only because of their skin color but also because they are not hairy like the white girls in the UK who have stubbles all over their legs and stomach after shaving. By the way, I'm one quarter English and three quarters Southern Indian (Tamil and Malayalam) which gives me a mocha color. And luckily the Indian genes won out because my skin is smooth as silk without the hairiness of full blooded white girls.

Sure you get thsoe that are white as if they have been soaking in a bucket of bleach, then you get that nice golden Bipashu Basu skin colour and then teh really dark people who by the wa are very attractive. On my trips to India the people of Rajasthan, fair, brown or very dark had the most gorgeous features ever! and all the fair ones happened to be the short fat skanks in the metropolitan areas thinkin' that they are all dat with their lal baal full of mehendi or whatever trying thier utmost to pass off as goris, adn here I was more Indian and proud than they were, oh yea and ofcourse it cracked me up. I'm not fair, im nto dark I have brown skin and the local hotties were checkin' me out more than the locals who harcore bleached themselves, and I didn't need to dress up like a slut like a lot of the chix there. Indians should address discrimination and racism in thier own nation before they talk about others

To Natasha or Tasha (From U.S) or whatever yr name is - what kind of a name is that? no wonder you are biased towards white skin - you even have a white name!First of all, you sound like you have a colonial mentality and you make it sound like having white skin is something that Indians should be proud of? why is it that whiter skinned Indians should be more proud? and you know whatelse is hideous? the fact that lighter skinned indians ASSUME that they are good-looking and ASSUME that everybody around them shares the saem opinion (oh screw the fact that they may be short and fat with zilch features) just as long as they match their white counterparts. However it's great that you are honest - that you think lighter skinned people are better looking coz that's what the majority of indians think. And it is your OPINION, it's not a FACT. And you probably think you are so fabulous because Indians worship you because you "don't look Indian". Is that somethign to be proud of? when people can't even tell who you are? Also a comment to that person from Bangladesh: if you were a lighter shade of brown and you have become tanned, what's wrong with that, you will lighten slowly with time, if that is your natural colour - why are you bleaching? I think it's much easier if you just openly admit that you want to be fair - don't deny it,that's what so many Indians try to do, but they just end up revealing what lying, inferior, and insecure people they are.

Indian people are not backward. They are as aware as the rest of the world that a light complection does not necessarily indicate a high IQ, but it takes time for long upheld cultural practices to die out. I am married to a Nepalese man and we are raising our son to be colour blind. To be proud of his heritage is his right, but to be proud of his complection - that would be shallow. All people can be beautiful - even people who are not physically gifted. Real beauty is in the eye of beholder - it is strange that a region of the world which has given us such deep and meaningful religions as hinduism and buddhism can also foster such cultural practices as rejecting people on the grounds of their skin colour. I am sure that this will pass in time, and women and girls (as well as men and boys) will refuse to be viewed as objects and demand to be valued for their abilities and acheivements rather than their looks.

"Oh don't worry - your're not that dark" - sound familiar? - but secretly they are so proud of themselves - even if they have no personality and no intelligence- it'a always about what people say when they look at you. Mind you these kind of people have extremely low self-esteem. I think that "personality is-what-counts" kind of thing should be totally eliminated from this conversation because let's be realistic people, although as shallow as it may sound, no matter what, people always go by looks (not all but many). I've heard many Indians say "she is so smart, nothing much to look at coz she's dark, but very bright - atleast she has that" Indian society is so rigid and sooooooo slow to change - we are called a 'classic and sophisticated culture' - what a laugh - Indians are so behind the rest of the world in terms of thinking - sophisticated - haha I don't think so. We are good at calling Oceanic Peoples "primitive" - hello let's look at ourselves! Indian people judge you by your looks. I myself have heard Indian people from India outright saying that fairer-skinned Indians are more superior - this is certainly not a fact but it is a an opinion shared by the great majority of Indians. I strongly believe that only the western world will change the way Indians perceive dark skin. I know it may sound odd, but noticed how Indians think the word of a white person is the word of the Gospel? well if a white person says dark skin is gorgeous, more darker skinned girls begin advertising products, darker skinned girls appear in magazines and on billboards- just watch Indians - they will follow like a flock of dumb-ass sheep - I guarantee it (but slowly). India may have gained "independence" from the Brits but they haven't gained independence mentally. This is so embarrasing and for me as and Indian becuase many white people have also pointed this out. My white friends always ask "why do Indians try to be white, they look so funny and stupid - white skin, blue eyes - that's us - Indians are so attractive they way they are - do u see us being obsesed with being dark and wearing dark contact lenses and hoping that someone will mistake us for an Indian?. So I reckon dark-skinned people have to stand up for themselves, don't ever sit and listen to another Indian who puts you down. I beleive in standing up for oneself. It's bad enought tha twe have to stand-up to our own people, but that's the way this society is - who knows maybe in a million years or so, we may..just change.

My colour is not at all dark I'm pale, no different then most Brits. Well I'm not pink, but I'm creamy skinned or pale yellowish... I can turn kind of brown though if I lay out, I don't know if that has anything to do with being part Indian.... But I must admit I look ever so slightly Indian and that's not a bad thing.. It gave me nice thick hair and pretty brown eyes..I like Indian boys, they got really nice complexions. I just never thought of Indians as black, I think of them as mediterenean people...I just hate the backward english attitude but I'm proud to be part Indian. However It's kind of imbarassing as my great-grandparents were my age {16} when they had my grandmother. But other then that being Indian is cool.

Sarah from the US, as you said your racial composition, I'm 15/16 Indian and 1/16 Scottish (my great-great grandfather was Scottish), but indian is all i know how to be, and the Scottish don't show up on me (I have no Caucasian features). Hey, I am one of the people who believe in character and personality rather than any superficial attributes of a person, especially Color, for God Sake!!!! But you know. its a tough world out there, especially in India, where even today our parents of the boys look out for "Fair-Tall beautiful" kind of a girl, for their sons! The concept of a "fair Girl" is a taboo that we indians can never overcome without a huge effort in that direction. I myself am a victim of such a discrimination based on color! I think its atrocious, ridiculous, inhumane and immature.

Cindy and Sara Ok, leave the topic of indians calling them different from africans. Even all the africans are not black in colour either. They also have different shades. What pleasure do you derive in calling everyone black? Do you think europeans are all white - this is not true. Even europeans have different shades - pink, golden and brown! Some chinese look whiter than many europeans! Do you think white skinned people are superior - than in any race you can find some real white people! Or do you think all europeans are superior? Your comments bring the question of what you are lacking, brain or just the capacity to distinguish colour.

"you are part of the black race" if you define "black" as not "white", then there isn't only one "black" race. What, you think Indians, Africans, Hispanics, etc are all the same? Indians are made up of the genes of the fair-skinned Aryan conquerors (who are not White Caucasians), and the dark-skinned Dravidian natives. Which is why we come in a range of colours from fair to brown to dark.

It may seem ironic, but I'm the opposite of the stereotypical "self-hating Indian". I'm fair-skinned, and to dark Indians want to be fair - look on the bright side, you don't sunburn as easily! I will never understand why Indians try to be white - white people never try to be Indian - They think we're uncivilised - Indians all over the world, get over yourselves!! The gals like the fair guy, so i cannot complain. Not to be racist or anything, but hungry-for-sex black men will take any woman of any other race if black woman doesn't give in, and the only ones they'll mostly get through with are the desperate or slutty ones. Black people are the most self-hating in the world - they believe in mixing up and getting "colour" in the family. Aside from in Africa, a 100%, jet black African is rare. Dark isn't a bad thing - I know quite a few fair, unattractive girls, and dark, attractive ones, and If i had to choose, I would take the latter (i know some indians who will take the former). I look at personality too - believe me - unless you just want sex, a bad personality can turn you off a beautiful girl, and a good personality can make an average girl seem beautiful. You very scarcely find looks, personality and intelligence in one package.

I hve to say someteims it is sooo embarrasing to be associated with such a screwed up ethnic group. I tell ya, Indians will NEVER change.

im so glad that i found this treasure of a website because evn though i knew in my own head my own views and morals, which are that everyone is equall and i mean EVERYONE i wasn't sure if anyone else felt like i did. I thought that until eveyone could understand that skin colour should not count for anything i would have to change to fit into society. I am black-british and feel that wherever i am i will not be considered beautiful. i have dark skin. When i was younger i didnt think anything of it, i can go as far as say i didn't really notice it. We learnt a bit about racism at school but i didnt think it still existed but i was soon to find out it did. The really sad thing is i have experienced racism, that sounds wierd saying it for the first time and it has all been from black people. I remeber a light skinned black boy with a girlfriend who was a white female calling out to me "who are you the, queen of Ghana!" i didnt know what he meant but later found out it wans't a compliment, i let it get to me more than it should have, after that day i started noticing evry little comment, every gesture, things that i would never have noticed before. My black fair skinned friends would say "LORD you are dark" and "i need to get out of the sun, i dont want to get to black". The one time i comfronted a mixed race friend with his hurfull comment he was shocked i said to him "Sorry if my beieng black is offending you, by all means feel free to close your eyes", by this time i was using bleaching creams( i had just turned 15.) The worst thing is i knew all along the damage they caused, i even knew i could get SKIN CANCER! but i believed that beieng exepted by my own race and others was worth the risk. Im ashamed of some black people, the stupid ones but even moresoe i am ashamed of the intelligent black people who will be the pioneers for our race and still believe that light skin will always be more atrractive than dark skin. It pains me even futher to know that indians like blacks also have an obsession with fair skin. I have been told by many that i was one of the most beautiful girls in school, so why then do i still get racist comments. I was voted in the last year of school the most popular girl but so what because i know theres people out there unwilling to even talk to me so my personality counts for nothing. Things are changing and there will always be hope while there are still people like you and me who can see deeper than any colour on the surface of our body. Why do all these stupid things even matter. Why cant we all focus on something more bennificial for the world that we live in and the people in it. Maybe i am beieng childish but these are my views and morals. I am now sixteen. Stay srong because one person can make a difference.

This happened to a known family of mine. I call him Mr X. His mother asked him to get married to a girl of her choice. The girl was dark. So X didn't like her and ran out of the family for a few days. The mother liked that girl, because she was from the family of her relative and she lost her mother a young age. So the mother liked that girl and somehow got X married to her. X didn't like the girl (his wife) at all and iltreated her in every way. He started taking alcohol, spent money on horse race, brought prostitutes to their home and spent time with them infront of his wife. He also beat her many times. His mother stayed with him till her end just to save x's wife. The fact is X is not too fair either and he was short in addition. He was educated and he generally talks about every subject, science to religion, technology to literature. Can we call him a man just for these?! Above all his wife endured all his abuses because that is how a typical indian wife is supposed to behave. They got children and one was darker (son). X called him names, discouraged him for his colour. The son then grew up and got married to a fair lady who was also beautiful. Somehow the inferiortiy complex of being dark is so deep in him. He who loved his fair wife so much in the beginning started suspecting her. He went to the extent of refusing their new born baby as his. Finally the marriage broke. Now who is responsible for all these mishaps? Is it not Mr X? How can an educated person like Mr X, who talks claims to know everything under the sun ruin himself and his family like this? Is the desire for fair complextion so deep in our blood to stoop us from being human?!

Sarane, thats an interesting point. My grandmother who was full italian, had the brown skin I so wanted me being only 1/4 italian I have madonna's pale complexion. {don't ask how that happend} When she was a child she told me how much she disliked her colour and how other children who were the typical anglo-saxons called her names. Even the terrible N-word. Also in Itlaian culture it's prized to be pale and blonde. Sound framilar? She's always said how wonderfully pale I was. I thought that was terrible. Nowadays everyone wants to be dark, including me. The south Italians are often swarthy skinned and have thick dark curly hair as opposed to their northern neighbors. I'm autually kind of mad my family mixed up, becuase thats why I'm so light! The further we go back the darker my relatives are. It's a shame beautiful people have to have a complex about what makes them beautiful.

I have a similar situation in my family re marriage. I have a second cousin who is looking for a marraige partner. he is veryyyy dark himself and has turned down numerous girls because he said that they are dark. this was hilarious to us as he didn't seem to look in the mirror at himself, but i blame his mother who has been criticising dark people or her life and praising fair indians (who btw are ugly. she is saying what should she do now because he's turning nice girls down. she herself had seen one dark girl, very pretty and intelligent with great values and said "oh she's nice, but imagine how dark their kids would be" - this is the low point to be quite honest, so what she is facing today wiht her son is her doing. when will all these mad indian parents learn?

I don't even know why Bollywood stars are considered good-looking. THey are under heavy make-up and lighting - they are not that white for real and anyways most of them use chemicals to lighten their skin, just as whites use tanning products, except they are not obsessed and twisted like Indians. Also Bollywood stars aim to look anything but Indian, howelse do you explain those hideous wigs, and crazy contact lenses they all wear to pass off as non-Indian - and beleive me this is usually taken as a compliment. Imagine seeing them without their make-up...ewww..aaggh! and if a star happens to look like a 'real indian' then they are considered ugly - and also Bollywood spends half its time duplicating Hollywood movies and whiel they are at that, they also try and duplicate looks - and do you see HOllywood stars trying to look like Indians???? hell no! why? because they have pride and self-respect (minus boob jobs etc) they don't have identity issues like Indians - god this is soooooo embarrasing. All I can say is Indians are a screwed up bunch of people that will neverrrr change their thinking.

I agree with Anita just because your skin is dark does not mean you are ugly and as for Jatin you need help!!!! I have seen most bollywood shows and all I see is fair skinned girls who do not even look Indian they look Greek or Arabic in many ways. My grandfather is very very dark but he is not ugly.He told me story about a time when he was stationed in London during WWII he and his friends met a fair skinned Indian woman and when of them went up to her she turned her nose up at him. Like she was some one important and what is sad is most of the fair ones I know are rude yet the darker ones are nice. I had a third grade teacher who was Indian but she was born in South Africa both her,her husband, and her three kids arein between fair and dark but she never fancied herself better than other people because she was always treating others with respect.

My mum is quite far skinned with amazing features where as my dad is quite dark i get my features from my mum but my skin colour comes from my dad whereas my sister is fair like my mum but she has features like my dads. MY mum has never treated me any different and my skin colour has never been an issue. I have been commented on my good features numerous amount of time becuz im tall with big attaractive eyes and a sharp nose. ppl should understand that no matter how good looking you are there is something that will always be held back from u. If people stop looking at a persons skin colour and actually see a persons features instead u will see that darker people are way more attractive then white people or fair people. Being a lil darker actually enhaces your features. Iam a darker version of my mum and our eyes and nose are somewhat alike but i get more comments on my eyes then my mum does its becuz me having a darker skin actually emphises my eyes and my other features. Why do u think europeans like to get a good tan its becuz a tan makes u look healtheir brings our your features and makes you look toned. Iam very proud of my dark skin and i never ever in my entire life thought of me being below a fair skined person. If u do have a daugter that is dark tell them confidence is much more important then skin colour a girl that walks into a room filled with confidence will draw more eyes then a fair skinned girl who is not so confident. BE proud of ur skin colour and remember dont try and change what u have no control over and plz plz plz stop bleaching your face!!!! to the rest of the world we sound soo pathetic why do we indians like giving the europeans the impression we want to be just like them cuz thats what we are doing. For god sakes you are indian being dark is associated with being an indian be proud of that!!!!! ANd mothers and dads if u ever hear a family memeber or an outsider commentiing on your children how dark they are tel them politely that u love it that she or he is dark. Start liking your kids complexion instead of wishing they were this fair or that fair cuz at the end of the day what would u rather have a dark child with 2 arms and legs adn a good brain or a child that is disabled or abnormal?????? ask youself that!

My name is Maria I'm 13 years old and I live in minnesota usa. I'm you're typical americna mutt. I'm a blend of German, English, Italian, french, jewish, finish, russian and so on. I have 12 nationalities. But anyway for whaterver reason I'm very fair skinned. In america everyone wants to be darkly tanned and I mean darkly. If a white person is luckly enough to tan easily they will. I have friends who tan so much they let themselves get darker then some indian people I know. But my point is I've been through the same kind of grief with my complexion for the opposite reason. When I was younger my friends made me feel so terrible about being fair, that I felt so unatrrative and from then on been disguested with my colour and anytime anyone made comments about it, I felt like crying my eyes out. My parents are fair so that explains why I am. Here is another shocking fact to top it off. I love India and anything about it's culture. I wish I was Indian. That made it even tougher on me to have fair skin. And now whenever I can, I try my best to get a good tan. I realiaze I'll never be chocolate brown like my friends,{they are whites} but if I work at it, I can get a light tan. Sometimes I don't even like to go out unless I have a tan, or I won't wear shorts if my legs look too white. To any of you Indians who have been upset by or degraded because of you're skin colour, you are beautiful people, much more beautiful then any of us whites, especially ones like me. Be proud of you're beautiful brown comlexions. If any whites have ever said anything about you, it's because they are green with envy and know you have something they can't have. I wish I could be happy and proud of my colour, but I can't be. I've been hurt too much. I sympathsize deeply with anyone who hates or feels uncofortable with their skin colour.

I am a brown coloured indian female. I really feel that there are many racist indians. My mother was also fair too, but she never allowed me to bother about my complexion. My parents always wanted me to be highly educated and multi talented. When i was young many hurt me by their comments about my complexion. After i grew up and studied more, every relative of mine started praising me for my achievements and behavior. I was too careful in selecting a partner, who can respect my feelings and let me enjoy my life. Even now some of my relatives pass comments about my complexion. One girl who was wheatish is now trying hard to become fairer. For achieving that she stays at home to protect her from sun. She does nothing though she is a degree holder. Some people make me to wonder if taking care of beauty is our only motive for living? I can't imagine a life which concentrates only on grooming. I really wonder how some people can derive happiness in doing just that.

To Anitha from India - there is not much that you can do in terms of how other children think about people with dark skin. They are simply a product of the society we live in - and clearly they must come from families where their parents and relatives speak about dark people as if there is something ugly and wrong with them, which is so sad. I feel bad for your daughter - kids can be so cruel and it is exactly these sorts of kids that grow up to encourage their children to be fair or bleach their skin or whatever. So I suppose all that you can do is to tell your daughter that she is beautiful no matter what skin colour and don't try to change her. If more parents did this then our society wouldn't be full of Indians having an identity crisis. And also explain to your daughter why these kids are doign what they are doing.

I have brown skin (not fair, not dark, kind of in-between) and my two sisters are quite fair like my mum. They family absolutely adore them because they are a little lighter than I am. Even my mum and aunts encourage us to be fair and always make comments about fair peopel beign pretty (evneif they are actualyl ugly) and dark ones being ugly (suprise suprise). They also think that fair people suit any colour, whereas dark people should have narrow choices as they look ugly in light coloured clothes. And yes they love that fair and lovely crap. Also something which a lot of non-fair skinned people may experience is being told to stay out of the sun - that is so annoying. I'd rather go darker and enjoy the outdoors, than stay indoors like a sad little nocturnal protecting myself from going "black". Btu yea to a mature person these comments do't mean much. but to younger person, these comments can really begin to affect them. people don't realise the comments that they make and the repurcussions of them. I am considered quite attractive by a lot of 'outsiders' being european people, but people in my family don't, as I am not fair. I also remember crying quietly on my own as a younger girl because of comments people made (people in my family). They always said it in a humourous way and ended by saying oh never mind ha ha ha. If it was light-hearted humour then why did I feel so bad. Why weren't the jokes aimed at fair people. Why couldn't they say oh god your are too fair, get a tan..oh nevermind..ha ha ha??

To all those idiots out there, if you bleach your skin (it may result in patches on your face). WHY? oh geez let me think, it's because you are altering the natural pigmentation in your skin - and when you screw with nature it screws with ya. So I guess some Indians prefer to look like dalmations rather than human beings..oh well, it's their choice. Also for those fools who take whitening pills, please stop b4 you kill yourself. And by the way after a while your original skin colour can return, and make you look real horrid.

I agree with all of the comments. To Jatin - was it you that didn't understand my comment or was it someone else's comment. Anyhow if it was mine, bascially what I was trying to say is that I don't agree with people resorting to extreme measures, or any measure for that matter, to look white. I absolutely beleive that dark people are beautiful. I don't even think that skin colour is what makes one attractive, its the features. But waht I also said was that Indians will NEVER and I mean NEVER comprehend this. They will always perceive darker people to be 'ugly'. I mean look at the Indian movie stars they hardout bleach their skin. I have seen some of the bollywood stars in real, and they are not that fair, adn when people see them, they go "ohhh she's dark, she's not that pretty", Kajol (oneof the prettiest actresses) is considered ugly by a lot of people because she doesn't whiten herself to teh same extent as all the other freaks in the industry, eg Aishwarya Rai - ever noticed how she started off in the industry as a darker woman, and now she is white like a ghost. Face it if she was brown or very dark no one would call her attractive (even despite her having nice features). And ofcourse her non-Indian eye colour is a major "bonus" for her. Moreover, I totally agree with dark models being gorgeous - Tyra Banks and Bipasha are definately beautiful - more so than Ash Rai - but do you hear Indians saying Bipasha is a babe, they way that they say Ash is? I don't think so. And also on that point about people worryign about their children's skin colour...oh man I only have swear words for those kind of people to be quite honest. I know so many Indians that favour the fair child, or look for partners that are fair. I even know a woman who cried after her baby was born becuase she was darker than her and her husband. So people there is nothing that we can do about screwed up people out there. ANd if anyone makes a comment to your face about you being dark, tell them off really badly in front of other people, I have found this to be quite therapeutic.

to indian women - tf you bleach your skin to be fair when you have a child that child is going to be dark, so if you hate dark so much you should pay for making your children dark, they should turn on you like a wild tiger. dark indians unite, blame your father too they are the educated folls who want fair girld and there are not enough to go around, the dark girls have to bleach to look fair, but in reality she is a darkie. it is your parents fault they are crazy.

It is sad to admit that racism still exists. What's even sadder is that "people of color" are the most racists against each other. My family is a rainbow of races, so I don't have a problem accepting one single soul for who they are. Skin color does NOT make the person, the heart and personality does. So sad that only a handful of human beings feel this way :(

Umm... Jatin from Canada... I don't understand your comment... are you saying that dark people are not as beautiful because they are dark!! This kind of attitude that indians have are what makes people with darker skin an outcast. Look at worlds most beautiful models like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campell, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, and Sushmitha Sen. They are soo beautiful, and it is there color that makes them glow even more. I am sick of seeing all these "fair and lovely" commericals on Indian TV channels which portray beauty as light skinned. The texture of your skin and your features are what make you beautiful, not color. I actually look better in the summer when I get a tan. In the winter time, I look too pale and and dull! I am so glad that are beautiful models like Bipasha Basu are representing the true Indian Color. Living in America, I see the value of having darker skin. I can go to the beach and not worry nearly as much as a white person of getting cancer. My white friends spend 100's of dollars going to the tanning booths and still complain cuz they don't have the even skin color that I do! Indians need to stop being so shallow and realize we make ourselves look like fools.

I thoroughly loved reading the comments submitted. It's a releif to know that there are some people out thre with some pride and depth. But being realistic, no matter how gorgeous one is, if you have darker skin you won't be considered good-looking from an Indian perspective. Andif you are short and fat and have absolutely no features, and have white skin, you will be admired. I know it sounds really sad and distorted but it's true. I reckon that Indaisn still have a colonial mentality, where not only fair skin, but 'european-ish' features are regarded as attractive. I mean why else do you see Indians dyeing their hair blonde and wearing greeen and blue contact lenses? I persoanlly think that these sorts of people need major psychotherapy. I live overseas and Indians here are seriously crack. They bleach their faces, take whitening pills - wassup with that??? something to worry about people

A tan may be attractive as a beauty treatment but they still look down on your natural tan and think of us as inferiors.

where does it say - make your daughter "feel better" about her complexion in this article? i couldnt find it anywhere. what was written was the way a mother handles her daughter is the way a daughter feels about herself. if a mother feels that it is better to be fair than dark, like 90 percent of indians feel, then they should not pass this feeling on to their daughter.

I am very very fair: my mother is russian and my father is northern italian. As soon as the summer starts, so do the comments about my skin..."you are so pale, why dont you tan, don't you ever go outside?". My entire USA society seems obsessed with skin color, and how they can change it. My parents tell me that my skin is beautiful, and just because everyone wants to be dark dosent mean I have to be. INDIVIDUALITY is a great thing! Embrace being different, because if we were all the same it would be Sooo boring!

I should probably not even be writing this comment, but I was so annoyed reading this article!! Yes, I have seen this obsession of Indians with 'fair' complexion. Even though the article seemingly is written with good intent, I am thoroughly annoyed by the points listed out by the author to make their child feel 'better' about their complexion. Majority of them are trying to tell her how the rest of the world uses various means to get a tan complexion. The problem get over is to overcome the mindset of being what the majority or the popular culture want you to look like. Literally they have to feel comfortable in their own skin, the parents that is. Only then can they make those kids feel better..

I think these girls need to be taught that people in their culture are very diverse. I think they also need to be aware that race seems to be an issue but should not hold them down from becoming beautiful mature women. I am an African American girl who has been commonly mistaken for every other ethnic background but my own. People have always insisted that I am "mixed" Which made me often wonder if a black girl who is pretty be "ALL" black. Keep in mind I am NOT a light shade. I did not always enjoy my complexion. It seemed to get in the way. As I grew older I learned more about my culture I became more accepting and comforable in my own skin. Infact, I wouldn't want it any other way. My mother told me God made me the way I am. How dare I try to change my body if God wanted me to be this way. I also wanted to mention that I am also in a relationship with a man who is from Nepal and India. His complexion is fair. He loves my skin and it has never been an issue to him. It took a bit of time for his mother to accept me. Later she told me she felt ashamed for doubting me as being "good enough" for her son.

This obsession with light skin is ridiculous but is so prevalent esp in India. Personally I think Indians are racist, i have several friends who will cringe at the idea of their son marrying an african american but will tolerate their son marrying a white. In fact here the indian men think very highly of themselves who date white. It is pathetic so I really dont feel any sympathy to indians who are victims of racism coz most indians are racist.

Along with you good work Indiaparenting should help the coming generation to get rid of all this cast system that exists in India.

In the story above the mothers comments and actions are what led this woman to thinking she was inferior because of her skin tone. I myself am a native canadian with a white husband, my oldest has dark hair, eyes and skin; my youngest on the other hand has blue eyes, blond hair and light skin. I let them know that they are both beautiful and they are both the same in other ways. Children should know that everybody is different and those differences are what make them special.

Hello: I am a African American female student and I am currently writing a paper on the stigma with dark skin complextion. Although I am an American citizen, and knowing how much my country is rittled with the cancer of racism, I have never been ashamed of my complexion. Complexion complexes is a big thing amoung Black Americans. It actually traces back to the mental tactics used on the Africans that were captured and brought over to America. The slave owners had to make the African turned slave hate the color of his skin in order to keep him from joining with fellow slaves and leading a revolt. by the time slavery was abolished in America in the later part of the 19th century, the mental damage had already been done. A man by the name of Willie Lynch (the one who was very intrumental in implementing these tactics) predicted that if his tactics were put into use and used, if I could use the term "religiously", the affects of it will last for about three hundred years. It has alsmost been three hundred years since he gave his address in 1712 and the skin complexion issue is still something that confronts Black Americans. I am interest in learning about how skin complexion has become such a big issue in countries like India, Asia and even in Europe amoung fellow Europeans like Italians vs. Russians. If anyone has any information that they think would be useful to me in my search to understand WHY this is an issue and HOW did it become one. I am in the process of doing a research paper and I can use all the help I can get. My email address is Saranne8@excite.com Thank you so much Saranne
