Hello! I have read My Stroke of Insight. It talks about a woman losing the left side of her brain. She now doesn't have jeaolosy, judgjment, fear, an ego, or anger which all come from the left brain. The left side of the brain defines that we are an individual and everything is seperate enteties. The right side tells us we are one with the universe. Without the left side, she had empathy, love, joy, and forgiveness. I also read an article about Mandalas. They are created first in India. It is believed in Bhudism that everything you see is an illusion and every trauma you experience in life is not meant to bog you down because you are able to always "complete a circle" around you. For instance, the left brain also concerns itself with scientific concepts, facts and knowledge, details, order and patterns, real things and the present and past (which includes much of our experience, of course). Hi. i had a head injury when i was 6 yrs old. I have always been musically and artistically talented. I did well in school also. Well the injury has caused migraines and memory problems when I was in 9th grade and i lost my job due to a severe migrain. 3 years ago I found out I have excess fluid in the left and right ventricles. Ever since i was very small i have been a very artistic person (drawing, writing stories, play guitar etc) but i have also always been in top set maths, science and so on at school. You could say that's a balanced brain, but i doubt thats the case. Sure there might be a corrolation between sides of the brain and subjects but the brain isnt a 2 piece puzzle. I dont think you can sum up how we problem solve and think up ideas based on an entire side of something so complicated.

Alot of tests are for people to determine what side is their more dominant side.I believe that some of these tests are severely inconclusive becuase there are people out there who are analytical and will process things with a logical approach, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t use their right side of the brain.the general genetic make-up of alot of people is that they are more inclined to use theirleft side due to activities that are conducted which need people to use their logical thinking.at the same time, peoples interests sway them to conduct activites which will use their right side of the brain. everyone who takes the tests should not view themselves differently, they should just accept the facts they may be more inclined to use their left side, but also still lock into their right side when needed, meaning that their personality should be what they want it to be.

I take offense to the Math comments on all these right and left brained sights. It really depends on what you mean. Math use to be rote memorization. Now it is graphical. At any rate Math is all about patterns, which is what right brained people are good at. Every stockbroker and financial guru I have ever met is left handed, not right handed. Right handers are good at quick calculation... they make good bookkeepers but could never do well in the graphical world of finance.

As a teacher I am very sensitive to the modalities of my children. If a right brained dominant child is having trouble understanding a math concept, I encourage them to create art work or a story or manipulate materials to help them understand. It is very easy to help any child use his/her strenghts to gain new insights. Good teachers know this and encourage their students to engage in learning that is meaningful and fun for them. As a left-brained person, I found the article informative, yet annyoying. Where is the left-brain? Conventionally, the "left" is determined from the prospective of the observer, which results in "left" situated on the hemisphere located over the region commenly known as the right eye. In other words, the left-right axis is determined by the observer, standing in front of the subject or patient. I believe this is this what is taught in medical school. Yet in common parance, "left" hemisphere suggests the area directly above the left eye. It would be helpful, at least to me, if the author would indicate what she means by the "left" hemisphere. Perhaps if I were "right-brained" (hence intuitive) I wouldn't need to ask. Unfortunately, I'm not; hence this question.

I think that it is important to develop practical means to train both of the hemispheres sufficiently so that the average intelligence and creativity of mankind can be raised to a higher level, as such there will be more outstanding scientists,politicians,musicians etc. After all, the modern civilization is intimately related to creative and rational thinking, as well as the courage to experiment!

Don't give children an excuse that because they are right-brain dominant that they don't have to be good in Math. I am a right-brained person and I excelled in math by studying hard and determined to be a science major in high school. I am a PhD now and teach statistics.

for more info read Betty Edwards' "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." Also try clasping your hands together, folding over the fingers (as if in prayer.) If the left thumbis over the right, you have right brained tendancies, and if the right thumb is over the left, you have left brained tendencies. :-)

I can really relate to what is clearly but briefly described in this article. I recognize it in myself and in my oldest daughter's approach toward many matters in life. Both of us tend to obey the impulses of our right brain more than most people are inclined to do.
