My son, 5 years, has an IQ ( just tested through WPPPSI-III test) of over 150 ( he hit the ceiling of the test, so it could be higher too). My question: what are the resources in India for Gifted children? Is there any special school? I live in Delhi, and there is nothing here. However, I would be interested to set up somethings here with other parents of gifted children where we can exchange information and resources. Anyone interested? I am also thinking to set up a kind of society here for gifted children, but would like to know if there would be interest?

I love this website. I was a gifted child. I had an Iq of 157, the top 2% of Britain, at 10 years old. I went to a Ł15500 a year boarding school for free. I left before my G.C.S.E's and now after spending 8 years smoking weed and taking drugs, I am at university finally doing a degree in science. I think that I am not as clever as I was. My memory was amazing and the way I could put my thoughts together was too. But I blame that on family troubles and moving out of home at 15, to go into care. then living on my own since 18. However if i had not realised my potential at such a young age I may never have thought there would be any point studying for a degree and I would be a janitor. So there is a need to find these kids early. I was helped by jewish social services who got me into a jewish boarding school. The government are losing out on a lot of potential through the ignorance of some teachers who are not motivated to help younger children get noticed.

I worked in Auckland and Jakarta as a teacher and coordinator of Gifted Programmes. Your article is on spot on many counts. However gifted education is a special needs area as it covers the other end of the learning spectrum which is made up of the learning disabled and challenged at one end the average to bright in the middle and children with exceptional abilities at the other end. Children have a preference for one area of talent but this generally indicates an overall ability that is superior. Gifted children are curious and intense and sensitive and know they are different. There is often low self esteem despite their better abilities and this causes social problems in peer groups. These problems manifest in a variety of ways from dumbing down to fit in to agressive acting out in classrooms and behaviour problems. Gifted children require extra stimulation that is not often possible to give in the classroom given the constraints of numbers and curriculum pressures. We are not of Indian decent, but my son, who in not yet two, is extremely talented. He can already count to ten and can say alphabet clusters. (ABCDE, HIJK, WXYZ.) I feel it is only a matter of weeks before he is putting it all together!
