I have a daughter who is 15 and a son who is 20. It took me the longest time to understand how much my children really know about the world - it was much more than I had imagined. Once, when my daughter was 8, we were watching something on TV and she inadvertently commented on a movie trailer that showed a man and woman kissing. That's when I decided that it was time for me to reconsider my own views of the world. After much discussion with my wife, we were able to let go of our preconceived notions of what our children OUGHT to know at their age. My wife and I have explained to my daughter that as a future mother and as a lady of our household, her body is sacred and that her actions have consequences. My son was taught that what makes a man is not the ability to have a child but the courage to raise one into proper adulthood. We have also explained that romantic love is an essential part of human life and there are proper times, places and ways in which to express it and that the choice of a life partner is a life-long commitment that can be very rewarding. Once my children understood the significance of romantic love and its function in life, they started behaving very mature about it. My wife and I have always treated our children as young adults and taught them the differences between the good and bad aspects in everything. We've also always encouraged choosing the good over the bad and explained the consequences of either course of action. Furthermore, we have always maintained open lines of communication with my children so that mother and father are the first people they come to for discussion before making choices of any level of importance. I have lived my life as a great example for my wonderful and celebrated children to follow and I have every confidence that they will enter adulthood equipped with the knowledge, decision-making skills and communicative prowess to achieve whatever success they desire in their personal and social lives as well as their careers. If you are good at your job as a parent, then you have nothing to fear. Children only want what's good for themselves and it takes nothing more than proper guidance and the good example of a parent to follow. Just telling kids that something is wrong or embarrassing them about something shows a grave failure in parenting and almost surely brings about terrible behavior and defiance.

I agree that a certain level of censorship is necessary for TV. But who should be in charge? As a parent, you are hte best judge of what you feel is appropriate for your child. If TV is so bad, why not just get rid of it? That way your child will not have any chance to view something obscene.

the only reason your kid is uncomfortable watching things like that is probably cause you are in the room at the same time. Most kids find it akward to watch something even the bit slightly vulgar is because their parent is in the same room.

I dont get you people. The media barely affects children. Yes maybe the clothes and the slang but children have a choice. And that is wether or not to follow what the procive on televison. The kids involved in school shooting that blamed it on the voices in there heads. Those voices werent caused by the media thats there own sick twisted minds from there faathers beating the hell out of them. Besides why dont those voices ever tell the to do good things like clean your room get good grades dont do that to girls unless you want childern and stop doing that into your socks. The youth of today is not corrupted by the media its corrupted by events occuring at home and school. When i say this you will probly stop reading thins but subcontiously you will think "was that snot nose kid right"?. And that would be because im 15. But im not an idiot. Dont forget that.

I am so disgusted with not only the shows that are allowed to be put on TV these days but also the advertisements. It is no wonder our society today is falling apart. There needs to be control of what is allowed on TV these days. I also think that radio needs to be controlled to. Announcers seem to be able to disrespectful, rude and offensive words with no reprocussions. It is a sad thing.

Yes a strict censorship on Television- be it the serials,Remixes,Promos of movies - should be imposed at the earliest... One thing can be with CAS, this type of programmes can be restricted to a couplr of paid channels.. Then a family can decide whether they need it or not ....

It is very true, thearticle. Television should be a media of light entertainment and education and must be censored . Already children are exposed to internet etc, there also such sites must be blocked.

I think the rot in the system is too much for any individual parent to combat. Commercialism, materialism and misplaced modernism as a societal or macro malaise and parental short-sightedness, diffidence in swimming against the tide and lack of time to invest in our children's upbringing at the parental or micro level are factors that are here to stay. At most, we can attempt to restrict the damage and not eliminate it.

Well I really wonder whether the heroines of present day movies will ever feel the same when their kids watch such scenes. Nowadays even some otherwise good movies have song sequences which we would not like our children to watch. It is a pity that every body talks about preserving our precious culture but nobody does anything about it.

Yes, it is very important to censor or filter unpalatable fare for our young ones. They have very impressionistic minds and half-baked ideas - this is a very lethal combination for them to go astray. As it is these are very turbulent and fast times to be raising children and we can only hope and pray that they sift the chaff from the grain. But who will bell the cat? That is the issue at hand.
