I found that if I stuck to the normal routine, he became more upset becuase he was expecting me to feed him. I change him for bed in the living room instead of his room. Instead of sitting in our nursing chair with his bottle, we sit in the living room watching a dvd or reading a book which distracts him while he drinks his bottle. Then I rock him to sleep when he is full, which is easier than trying to feed him when he is upset.

I can't believe that you guys are brestfeeding your kids(YEAH KIDS,NOT BABES) for so long.... That is just sick to brestfeed children for 2-3 years..I just read few Comments from the top and few from middle ,and I can't believe my eyes what I'm reding... Anyway,I brestfeed my kids for few months and the best way to stop milk is to put every day (all day) for 4-5 Days COLD,COLD neckerchief and tie it really good around brests(but every time it is dry you have to take it off and put some more water or ice on it) and it will dry in a minute ...I know it will hurt and it's not going to be easy but if you can if you continue like that for couple of days you should see difference... IF YOU DON'T WANT TO USE THAT,JUST DON'T BRESTFEED OR PUMP MILK AS OFTEN,and eventually it will stop.. Don't drink too much juices and water..it will just make you plum:)) so good luck!!!! PS.I don't want to say that doctors are stuped but if you want to stop doing something ,I think that is your own decision...you know what is best for you and your child!!! And even if you take yor baby off ,and you stop brestfeeding don't feel bad,you STILL WILL BE THE BEST MOTHER THAT YOU CAN BE!!!!! that it... byeeee

This made it easier when my daughter weaned. Because we already had other ways of lulling her to sleep. Using any negative consequences to stop breastfeeding ( bad tastes on the breast) sounds like a bad idea to me. And probally a source of therapy bills when the children become adults. LOL And even if you feel you don't want to be breastfeeding any more you will feel sad when the breastfeeding relationship ends.

The thing that has made it a little easier for my daughter is the fact that we finally put her in a 'big girl bed'. You can pretty much forget weaning if the child is in the same bed as you. You have to start slowly, first move the child to a seperate bed (and room if possible) nurse the child to sleep and leave. If the baby wakes up, go to the baby and comfort, you may have to nurse the baby for a few nights for more during the night, but they seem to sleep better without the noise or movement of the parents in the bed. I have gone cold turkey with the weaning, I am very uncomfortable but I had to wean her because she had a stomach virus and my milk was giving her diahrea and vomiting. I thought that my one year old son was too attached to the breast and would never want to wean. I slowly removed feedings one at a time so that my body could adjust the amount of milk it made and it wouldn't be painful. I found it easiest to take away afternoon feedings first. It took several days but he handled it really well, much to my suprise and then took the initiative to drop his morning feeding and then a few days later he dropped his bedtime feeding. Now I feel kind of sad because the weaning process only took 3 weeks or so and the last time he nursed I didn't know it was going to be the last time. My advice to all the moms out there trying to stop - please do not put something that tastes bad on your nipples to discourage your child from wanting the breast. To me, that seems like a betrayal of the trust. The method that I used worked really well for me, and I think it could work for alot of you. Just substitute alot of love for for the missed feedings, so your child knows that giving up the breast doesn't equal giving up the closeness the two of you share.

I just decided out of nowere to stop and I put him in his bed and he cried for a couple of days but now this is the 5 night and he slept from 9:30 at night until 7 these morning so there is hope. He didn't eat much at first but he started to like it after a day or so because it was different. Also he loves whole milk so try whole milk, you can give your child whole milk at 11 or even 10 months old. Sippy cups are good too he has had a sippy cup for a while and he likes the soft tip gerber baby sippy cup. I no how hard it is because he still cries for a little bit when he goes to bed but you will get use to it and it really doesn't hurt them to cry its good for them. I have been home with him since he was born and I just didn't no how to stop but I just decided its time and it worked and wasn't as hard as I thought. I think that a lot of mother should stop during the day before you complety wean them. Hope this helps.

first i want to say to any mothers on here if your 1 or 2 year old is losing weight because your trying to stop breastfeeding you need to talk to your pediatrician that could be a serious problem ..to other mothers i have a 11 month old daughter today is the first day i have stopped breastfeeding her it's hard but it will be hard at any age so do it now or later it probaly will be hard but every mother and child are different it may be harder for some babies and easier on others when i asked my babies doctor he said the best way to go would be cold turkey so that's what im doing ..how many times have you heard of a baby getting hurt from crying..good luck all

my one year won't eat like she use to. the doctor told me that i should stop breastfeeding her and now, every meal is a power struggle. she won't eat any veggies, meats, almost everything. and she eats less than half of what she ate when she was breast feeding. shes also getting four teeth right now. this is really hard for the both of us. i'm really worried that she isn't getting what she needs to be healthy. she really only wants to eat high dosed sugar foods. i need help on getting her to eat healthy and back to normal amounts of food. please help!

i am so relived that there are other mothers that go threw this! everytime i ask anyone for advice (even Dr.s) they just say that she will eventually get hungry enough! i'm sure this is true but it's awful seeing your daughter crying for you and not eating anything else! I have a 12 month old daughter who has stayed home with me from birth and i have never really left her! she is obsessed with breastfeeding and would rather nurse than eat food! i am leaving in a few wks for 5 days and am so worried that i will not get her weaned! also worried about leaving her since we've never been parted! i have been trying to get her to take a cuppy or anything and she refuses! even with breast milk! i am planning on just pumping out enough milk to not have terrible pain! has anyone tried this?

To all the moms that have no answers. I have a 11 month old and I am on my 2nd day of weaning him. The best thing that have did was the LEMON JUICE I put it on after every time he tried to nurse and he won't even try to nurse know because he nows it is so gross. And for the swealing part I have a ace bandage wraped really tight around my breast and you can't even fill the pain. If you need any more help I am happy to answer your questions.

I have a one year old baby girl and I hav eto tried to stop breast feeding for some time now i have even tried to pump breastmilk and feed it to her at a very young age and she doesn't want anything to do with anyting except the breast. but she has been drinking juice and water out of a cup since she was about 4 1/2 mos old .just recently i have been introducing cow's milk to her in the cup because she won't have a bottle. and she won't drink it at all. But, she eats solid foods really good. I think that she needs the breast for comfort not nutrition anymore. what should I do about it ?

hi all, a few tips to help u if it might! to have restful sleep at night,start giving ur baby water at night in bottle instead of milk.slowly he/she will get used to the idea that he/she has to hv last big feed before sleeping. those children who are breastfed for long are at an advantage-research has proved that,so mums should try to continue as much as they possibly can. when you wean a child from breast,it is best to do it stepwise,cutting one feed every 3-4 days.child will not take bottle immediately instead of breast but offer every time. my son was very headstrong and at eleven mths i started cutting his feeds and he did not take to bottle at all neither any other milk,so i gave him curd/fromage/cheese instead.that worked fine.i continued with one night feed till he was fifteen mths.he wudn't sleep without it when i wanted to stop.the method that worked for me was to wrap a few fallen hair from your head and stick it with cellotape around the nipple-once the child tried to latch on,he/she will be off.it will be emotionally upsetting for you when you stop breastfeeding ur hungry child(they won't hv anything for 2-3 days sometimes),but then they do. best of luck with your trials. reeta

For those that are trying to wean, you may want to try pumping and then feeding the milk from the bottle, it has made my transition easier because my daughter got used to having a bottle. Working full time, I really didn't have another option.

My little Nattikah is now 2years and 7Month, she is still nursing 2-3 times a day, she has never been to the Doctor other then regular visits, she is very healthy. I think I might consider weaning her by 3 years. A little advise for every mom who is considering weaning, make sure this is what you want to do, not something that everybody else wants you to do, preasure can really make you think you want to stop.
