I was walking at eight months and my mother let me use a walker. It is one memory I have that I still cherish because it brought me great joy and I loved it. I think perhaps people need to use more common sense and supervision. I never had an accident. My niece finally walked at 13 months. I don't think there is any real evidence that a walker hinders a child's ability to walk. I think each child is different. When my son is born, I will let him have a walker and watch him closely in a controlled environment so he can enjoy safely.

my daughter is 15 months old. she can walk along the furniture and can take maybe 2 or 3 steps on her own,but we've noticed that she is walking on the inseides of her feet. the doc said they cant really do anything until she is walking on her own all the time. she is also very double jointed,and turns both her feet out when she walks. doc thinks that she might be flat footed too. despite all this,i know that my baby will do her own thing and wil walk when she's ready. i just hope her feet turning out correct themselves with time. im feeling better now ive read that other mothers and fathers share similar worries to my own.

Once I saw this article I was relieved! I have an 11 month old and he is using a walker. He cruises everywhere is that thing and crawls as fast as you can imagine. But once you try to get him to walk its no use he would rather crawl... he can go much faster!! My husband keeps saying he's he'll walk anyday now but I'm not so confident. He walks along the furniture but thats all the confidence he has besides with the walker. I agree walkers are probably not the way to go. It takes away their confidence to help them develope faster, but you never know each child is different.

I think all children develop in their own time and some are quicker some ways than others. Enjoy your children the way they are because they do not stay this little for too long. I agree walkers do not help my son constantly tries to walk along with his one and is always bumping into furniture and falling down. Let them walk in their own time.. what is normal anyway ?? Hi , my daughter is 14 months, she can only manage a few steps before getting down to crawl. But she amazes me at how she holds a pen to scribble and she even knows which side writes and which one doesn't, if you turn a pen the wrong side she will turn it back when she wants to write, so i believe a baby might delay in some areas but amaze you in others.

hi I was getting worried about my sons evelopment untill I saw this site and read the comments within this article section, my son is 10 months old and all he does is roll around and goes on his tummy and does the lazy mans push ups arching his back while on tummy but that is all he does, he does at times want to grab things higher up like your pant leg and pull to brinbg him up then let go I'm waiting to see him crawl yet , my daughter was sitting and crawling by 8 months and walking by almost 12 months or aroun there, I know every baby has their own growth speed and well I guess my son is in slow speed lol.

My girl is 11.5 months, almost walking, I'm sure she can do it but the problem is now psychological - she just 'needs' to hold 1 finger of yours to walk along. I've tried recently subsituting the finger for the end of a long stick when she's not looking - this allows you to give her less support than a finger does. Works fine until she notices then she throws herself down or grabs for furniture! Richard

My son is 12 months and does not walk yet. I am relieved to see other parents have the same issue. My friends children began to walk at about 10 months. My son crawls faster than I can run...lol...he has met all other milestones. My friend has a 3 year old who is just now starting to talk. I have worried about him for some time. There is so much worry now with 1 in 150 children being born with autism. I have been told that many babies meet all the milestones and then at age 2-3 stop doing the things they learned at an earlier age. Later they are diagnosed with autism. I think as parents it is natural to worry and thanks to all your posts I will give my son more time to walk. He is 97% for height and weight so maybe the weight is holding him back. He is not fat just very big (solid). Thanks again for your post.

I know of other babies who have not walked until 18 months and although I think she is ok I am being pushed by a doctor for her to have a CT scan under general anasthetic to see if she has a problem. I experienced a problem with a walker years ago. My child had built up enough momentum to crash through a baby gate. She fell down eight carpetted stairs but still ended up with stitches. Be smart..stay away from them.

I think that mothers tend to do a lot of unecessary worrying about the stages of their childs growth. Any good pediatrician will inform a mother or father of most concerns. Don't read too many books either...you will just get opposing opinions which will cause you to worry more.
