I found out today that i have tonsilitis, it started about 7 days ago when i got a sore throat..it wasnt too bad then about 2 days after i got a cold so i thought that it was just a cold and would be gone within about 3-4 days as this is how they all were. my cold did go but i still had a very sore throat! the pain was killing me!! my throat had gone completely red and full of white lumps that were filled with puss! i went to the chemist yesterday and said that i just had a throat infection but i should go to the doctors to get some stornger anti biotics and so today i went to the doctors and he said i have tonsillitis so i got the anti biotics, penicilin i think and he said i should be better within a few days but have to keep taking the tablets anyway. :S

I've had tonsillitus loads of times- only a few times really bad, when the doctor kinda steps back in disbolief at the state of your throat! In answer to questions- * yep you can pass it on through kissing, but only if that person is suseptable *it can be a virus or bacterial, meaning some people have to sit it out and others get to take penicillin to make it go away *if you have it alot and the white ripped up stick on puss at the back of your mouth never seems to go away, make a diary over six months or so, show your doc, they'll decide wether to have em taken out. *you only get them taken out nowadays if they are really chronic/ effecting your life real bad. *it's much better to have them out when your young. *Ice cream really helps (easier to go down) *gargling aspirin helps with the swelling/ fever. *try and drink as much water as possible *get some good movies, put some ice on your neck (just for a lil bit when its bad 5 mins or so) and wait it out. *remember if it gets really bad like you can't breathe and can't swallow your tablets- you might need to take yerself to hospital- so they can put it in via drip- (that sucks when its that bad) ****** GET WELL SOON *******

I am having tonsilitis at this moment, trying to recover, last october i stopped having a smooth throat and started having a horrible rough sore throat until now. I thought it was due to smoking so i quit. But it got worse, i couldnt swallow properly, i have been getting tonsilitis every two months since last October. I have been to my doctor and he told me my imune system is cero, and so far this is why i have been exposed to tonsilitis more often. luckily this time i have a viral tonsilits,its going away slowly with some paracetemol, i make sure i take my vitamins like Zinc it builds ur imune system, mulitivitamins, and im taking Kelp as i also have been loosig my hair due to stress. Its true having tonsilits just makes u want to be in bed all day,it makes u feel tired and all u want is the pain to go away, I tend to have my gargles twice a day with lots of salt. I drink tons of water and hot soups. I try not to go out in the cold, keep very warm all day. Even when u feel hot, and burning wear as much clothing as u can to keep ur body warm. My doctor adviced me to have my tonsils out because he said i shouldnt be getting this ill, when he saw my throat he said it looked pretty bad, told me that my heart was not the only organ in my body. I didnt know exactly what he meant!? do u? i guess tonsitlitis and taking so many antibiotics and having injections every time u get ill can affect ur kidneys and other organs. But is it life threatening? I dont know if to take them out. I have a lot of friends who have had them out and they say that i should not have them out! they say because they dont get tonsilits but they do get faringhitis, sinusitis, they loose their voice, and still get a slight sore throat,and find difficult to breath. I agree with Trish that some of the comments posted are offensive. People come to the site for infomation and not to read trash. I've known tonsolitis for more than 20 years and it is a painful foe and one that is difficult to manage. You have the option of having your tonsils removed but make sure that the surgeon does a good job and remove them completely. When I have what I all a 'tonsil attack' I make sure that I REST enough (you must rest), gurgle my mouth with warm salt water, take enough vitamin C, eat soft foods, and to deal with the fevers and chills - lie down in a dark comfortable place and be well covered, and put cold sponges or towels (put them in the freezer first) on your forehead. You MUST continually hydrate yourself by taking in plenty of fluids - water, juice, soup, whatever that you feel comfortable with. Stay with bland/plain food. If necessary take some pain alleviating medication. If you're not used to self-treatment or cannot bear the pain and malaise, GO SEE A DOCTOR. Whatever anyone else may say, a doctor will be able to tell you if it were a bacterial or viral infection that sparked it off and if necessary, in the case of a bacterial infection, to prescribe antibotics with other pain-relieving medication. Medication is important because it alleviates the pain and allows your body to rest and recuperate. You must be diligent and follow through with the prescription for the antibiotis. Obviously, the tonsils caught the attack first - meaning that your body's immunity was low to start with. Read TallScotsGuy's informative facts about tonsilitis. If you suspect you have tonsillitis you should always go to see your doctor! Tonsils being red and swollen, pain, and little white or gray "puss" patches on your tonsils are usually a sure indication. Tonsillitis can either be Viral or Bacterial, let your doctor make that call. If it is Bacterial they will give you antibiotics, either a form of pennicillan shot, or oral (pills) antibiotics. Having tonsillitis doesn't mean you will have to have an operation to remove them. If you continually get tonsillitis, lets say 3-5 times a year, then your doctor may suggest you have them removed. Honestly after having tonsillitis I would rather have them removed! I've had quite a few penicillan shots and I STILL have my tonsils. Viral infections usually go away on their own and antibiotics don't work, but please go see your doctor! Gargle with warm salt water it helps relieve the pain. Rest a lot and even though it is very painful to swallow try and drink as much water and fluids so you don't get sicker. My doctor said I could suck on frozen pops and drink milk and milkshakes since my throat was so sore to swallow any other hard foods, the coolness even helped the pain.

Hi all ive just been diagnosed with what i imagine to be only a mild version of tonsilitis, However i take an ibrupfofen and two paracetamol every 3 hours along with my antibiotics so maybe thats why the symptoms seem mild.. my advice to anyone is take LOTS of anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibruprofen and also paracetamol to lower ur temperature, thanks all.

This is my second bout. It started with chills, muscular aches,and a sour throat. the other symptoms supsided after two days and my troat got progressively worse. over the course of a week my tonsiles took turs swelling and preesing on my ear causing further pain. It has been difficult to swallow and my jaw has tightened and i cannot eat because my teeth will oly open wide enough to allow a straw in. I am pretty miserable and have lost about 10 lbs. So far I've been dealing with this for 11 days. I am taking antibiotics but I started after 5 days into it because of late diagnosis.

hey. im pretty sure i have Tonsillitis. im not sure wat it was, but the night before i felt the pain, i went out and drank, smoke and popped some ecstacy. im not sure if it was the drugs or alcohol, though. Ugh! my tonsils hurt, cant swallow, neck pain, and under my jaw (beneath my ears) hurts. Well, this is my 2nd day having it. this is wat ive been doing so far help: -spitting in a cup so you dont have to swallow -sucking on Cepacol Sore Throat (very useful!! numbs your mouth) -sleeping alot with alot of layers of blankets (my body is usually freezing) -when sleeping, have a fan blowing on my head (my head is usually hot) -taking pain relievers (tylenol, ibuprofin) ehh...thats about it.

My baby was only 16 onths old when she caught tonsillitis and she became hospitalized. Her fever went as up as 40C and she had shivers and screaming with pain. She wouldn't swallow any medicine , antibiotic , paracetamol food or drink. Her condition got worsen day by day , she stopped even walking. I've got tonsillitis and have been put on the antibiotics course but I'm allergic to pennicillin so they've had to put me on something else called Erythromycin I was just wondering will this stuff take longer to get rid of it or not and is there any way of making the pain when swallowing go away even if temporarilly so that I can eat again because at the moment I'm even struggling to take the antibiotics. I had chronic tonsilitis last month. It started out with a mild sore throat on the right side, and then i noticed white patches on my tonsils. I went to the doctor, and he suggested getting them taken out immediately, so I did and they were infected, the surgery really hurt bad, but it seems to be helping me, it also took care of my sore throat, I had no idea that it could be fatal if u dont take care of it, if you experience these symtoms you should see your doctor, or Ear Nose and Throat Specialist. I am not sure if I have tonsillitis or not. I get those little white particles that people like to refer to as Tonsil Stones, but I get them behind the nose just beyond the roof of the mouth. I try to find them and dig them out with my tongue whenever I can, but I think that I overexerted my tongue trying to remove them and now it is making my gland on the left side right under my jaw rock hard. The feeling has extended to different parts in the left side of my head like the temple and behind the neck, but most importantly down into my chest and feels like an air bubble kinda. It happened once before, but I went to turn around and moved my entire upper torso in a twisting like motion because I didnt want to turn my neck because I knew it would hurt, and when I turned, I felt something pop in my chest section where I had the air bubble feeling, and the air bubble feeling went away and everything went back to normal. But now I made the same mistake of reaching my tongue into the section beyond the roof of my mouth to remove the so called Tonsil Stones and the feeling in the chest came back a little bit. But now my tonsils are getting worse because I am getting the feeling like its weighing down the left side of my face. Kinda feels like novacane after it wears off a bit. It all sounds weird, but its the truth. I just hope I can treat it the same way that tonsillitis is treated. My tonsils arent really swelling up very much, they are just getting rock hard. And yes, it is painful.

I got infected with tonsillitis 2 months ago and eventually it turned out to be streptococcus which made tonsils grow so big that blocked breathing and swallowing. tonsillectomy (cut off) is only recommended in extreme cases of tonsillitis. it is advised for people under 25, cause as you get older, the hemorahgining the throat gets hader to heal.@Unless there are no other options (cancer or chronic) antibiotics should do it. Make sure though you have to take them as prescribed (usually up to 1 week) or else the virus or bacteria will get immuned to the antibiotics; and you will get recurrence tonsillitis that might need more drastic measures.

well...i often get tonsillitis...during my pedia class, we were taught that tonsillectomy is only recommended if u happen to acquire it 3-4 times in 12 months...but still, consult ur pediatrician...also, i used augmentin and azithromycin as meds for tonsillitis...but since they're antibiotics, u gotta finish the whole course of the meds and not stop it when the inflam is gone...bacteria will build resistance against those antibacs if u do that...hope this helps...

I have tonsilitis then. To prevent it, I use 1 tablespoon of rock salt in a cup of luke warm water and gargle it everytime I go to bed. The result was amazing. No throat infections upto now. And it gives me a clean and relax breathing no dry feeling on the throat. The reason why a tonsilitis occur again and again even thou you take antibiotic is that when the antibiotic didn't kill the bacteria in one go the bacteria will produce an antibody that will cause the antibiotic useless when taken again. If your tonsilitis is acute I suggest you have them operated. Hope this helps.

I used to get tonsillitis once a year, now I dont get it too often unless there is a really bad cold going around. What I did was get my own homeotherapist to sort me out. My son got tonsillitis whilst on holiday in Spain. The doctor over there prescribed antibiotics and pure apple juice. I wasn't too certain about the apple juice but it seemed to aid my son's recovery. Now everytime he gets tonsillitis I head straight for the shops to buy some apple juice. My son who is 5yrs old suffers from repeated attacks of acute tonsillitis nearly once in every month.We have got numerous throat cultures done which are normally sterile.We have consulted ENT Doctors in this regard,but they have no satisfactory answer.I would like to know whether the removal of the tonsils,will lead to the spread of infections in the chest or lungs or will my sons immunity be compromised in any way? My mother died of nasapharyngial cancer.My father had just gone through cobalt and chemotheraphy last year. My younger brother is currently under medication because of recurring tonsilitis. Is there any connection or inheritance as far as his , my brother, of getting the same dread disease as what my mother and father had
