THIS TEACHES THE CHILDREN TO HANDLE THE MONEY IN A RIGHT WAY AND IT ALSO A BETTER WAY TO MAKE CHILDREN AWARE OF THE VALUE OF MONEY. Name: A person Country: fiji Comment: Pocket money is an issue that can be seen as somethimg new. What I have noticed in groups of children I have observed is that pocket money is a big indicator of socio- economic standing and is a avenue to show the rich and the poor in society. Coming from an educational orgonisation with youths of different socio-ecconomic backgrounds and yet being from an upper- class family, I have stared in awe at kids who pay in the canteen with 50-dollar notes! ... I had a substiantial amount of pocket money at that age and having this exprience taught me to deal with money in later life when I moved to study and live alone. It is not uncommon for kids to leave home for the purpose of education nowdays . At such a time it is imperative to be able to manage ones own money otherwise .... very frankly and this is an experience that I have seen happen to many people .... you end up BEGGING , BORROWING AND STEALING .... Why sell yourself so cheap? learn to handle money and learn the value of it at same time. Espicially if you have intensions to send your child away from home to studu , my advice is teach hime to handle money as otherwise he may end up in a giffy. So if you donot wish to be sued to banckrupsy teach your child the value of money . REMEBER ......IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY SO... TEACH YOUR CHILD THE VALUE OF MONEY ! Name: Heather Country: usa Comment: Yes,I would give my child pocket money only to give my child some responsiblity. So he can learn the value of a dollar. As a child I never recieved pocket money from my parents. My grandparents gave my siblings and myself money for our birthdays. In my opinion I believe money should be incorporated into a childs lif so when they get older thier spending habits will not go over the edge. Name: Chitra Singh Country: canada Comment: I'm from Guyana but lives in Canada. Yes! I will give my kids pocket money when the time is ripe. I have 3, 5 and 7 years old children and I am already teaching the 7 year old the value of a dollar. Whenever they bring Scholastic book orders from school, they want too many. I told her that you can have any item(2) to a value of $10. She then learns to add the item(s) in order not to go over $10. We then take the money from her Piggy bank to pay for the books. Now that Christmas flyers are distributed every week, she comes and ask me if a toy (she'd then give me a figure) is too much. I then compare the value with things such as grocery, pants, shirt, take-out, etc... etc. She is definitely understanding that not every thing can be purchased just because they wants it. Another technique is that whenever we visit the mall and she asks for something, I ask her again to think if she have something at home that is similar to what she wants.... then she'll say yes or no. Giving my children a certain amount of pocket money will show then how to spend and how to save. It also gives them the freedom to make some minor financial decision and feel good or bad about it. My parents allows me to save any excess pocket money. That was how I got a Bank account when I was 11 years old. Name: vinni Country: india Comment: i was o f the opinion that pocket money should not be given till i caught my 9 year old taking out rs10 on the sly from my purse.on being reprimanded she said because i have always refused hher so she took it on her own because she was big enough and once in a while she wanted to buy things of her own will.i realized my mistake.too many controls spoil the child and not moulds them Name: briana Country: usa Comment: i would becuse they are luckey to me Name: Kfantechi Country: usa Comment: Yes, I would give my kids and allowance. I have a 5 year old and he seems to think that he can get what he wants when he goes to the store and doesn't realize that his dad works hard for the money. So i have just started with a chore chart. Each chore has a set amount it's worth. if he does it daily then at the end of the week he gets paid for it. But the money goes into his piggy bank. I grew up that way and I only think it fair for him. I leared that if what i wanted costed to much that i couldn't get it or if i did then i had to repay the borrowed money. Name: Vivek Sadarangani Country: india Comment: YES, I believe that my child must learn the value of money. Offcourse he should give me pocket money when he grows up and earns too.
