listen guys, instead of insulting each other, try turning your focal point to that of a 10 year old, or even a 15 year old. just because they are young does not mean they are stupid. the type of effect that TV will have completely depends on the child. The main benefits children receive from watching television are education, entertainment and social skills. While children are given formal education in schools, the knowledge obtained from television is very unlikely to obtain by other means. There are many programs on television which actually educate but we donâ€™t even realize. Watching dramas like neighbours home and away has morals that we can get from them for our future etc. Television introduces us to a realistic and relative view of life. Without television we wouldnâ€™t know about any major natural disasters killings, major accidents etc. The news is an excellent example of why television doesnâ€™t give us a warped view of life. The news tells you exactly what is going on in the world and the news presenters and reporters tell you every detail that has been finalized that they know of. Sure there are newspapers but by the time you get the earliest chance to read them they would have already said it on television. There are also computers but people donâ€™t necessarily go on computers to read the news. We go on computers for researching, chatting etc. Television can inform us about current affairs for example lately there have been a lot of reports on pollution and water restrictions. The news on television can tell us if there is a kidnapper in our area so if youâ€™re a parent you can be more cautious or if youâ€™re a child you can be more alert. Iâ€™m sure most children donâ€™t like watching the news and will try to avoid it as much as possible.

On the subject of violence and nudity on satelite T.V's there is a PIN N0. that must be entered. Even if your child tries to watch these, or inadvertantly turns to these channels, he needs the PIN to watch them. Because of this I don't restrict my kids TV, they both watch 6-7 hours a day 10-12 on weekeends. Homework isn't a problem, my wife sits down with them and helps them do it quikly. I admit she does a lot of it, but personally I don't belive in it. Meal times are usually had infront of the TV, so thats not a prob. You are right, my kids don't watch educational TV, and they read no books whatsoever. But TV is our window to the world, it cannot be stopped. If you can't beat 'em join 'em. Also, homework is compromised greatly, but neither my wife nor I care. If they don't want to do it why shoud they? we rarely say 'no' to them anyway, and i woud be the first to call them spoiled. you cant teach an old dog new tricks, so why try to unspoil kids and limit thier tv? anyways, scool isnt a problem, cause they dont attend if they can help it. this behaviour we discourage but it cant be helped.
