skippy, you mention that if parents just wait it out the kids will probably quit. You haven't. Not to criticize you, I think it's the best of best. But chances are if they haven't quit by 12 they probably won't. I think parents need to love their kids no matter what quirks they have.

Hi everyone. I must admit the number of older thumbsuckers out there is extremely surprising. I am 16 and also 'struggle' with this habit, for lack of a better term. My divorced parents have always been a bit peculiar about my habit. They never tried to stop me when I was younger, most likely because my mum was also a thumbsucker until the age of 13. By the time I was 14-15, they started pestering me about it, (suspiciously at the same time.) By now I think they've just given up. My 11 yr. old sister does it too, and nothing has become of it as of yet, but I'm sure something's bound to. P.S. For all you parents out there writing, concerned about your infants' thumbsucking, my advice to you is this: Leave them alone until they reach about 2 1/2-3 years old. Studies show that 85% of children have given up thumbsucking by then. Be patient and ride it out. As they say, this too shall pass.

thanks for the comment. I don't think that I want to leave her. I do love her. It's just that I want to help her come to grips with the fact that she is not a baby and will never be one again. I have tried waking her up and holding her hand in her mouth so that she knows that she is sucking on it. It doesn't really do anything to her though. It's like she wants to do it. That is the sad part. I don't know if there is soemthing wrong with our relationship or what, but I want my wife back.

Have you parents ever thought of treating them like babies and tell them is that what you want to look like to others and is that how you want to live you life? Thumb sucking is a bad habbit. If it keeps going on after they get married, don't you think that it will cause some problems with the relationship. The spouce will think that they married a baby and might eventually want to divorce them. Why not try to help them now so that things like that don't occur.

I am 14 and I recently stopped sucking my thumb after several unsuccessful tries. What I did was type a loose hair tie to my thumb so if I ever put mt thumb in my mouth subconsciously I would have the hair tie there to remind me. The first two times I tried it I just got so frustrated and kept sucking my thumb and then one day I didn't want my teeth to get any more crooked and just yesterday I stopped putting the hair tie on my thumb and I don't have the urge to suck it any more~

I do however have a slight over-bite but nothing serios and I also dont think its from sucking my thumb because my dad has an over-bite much worse than mine and didnt even suck his thumb. And my mom on the other hand sucked her thumb untill she started smoking (18yrs)and she has perfect teeth so I agree that the over bit has something to do with how you position your thumb and how hard you push. My little girl got into habbit of thumb sucking when she was 3 months. i wasn't bothered too much that time as i thought its just a comfort and instead of having dummy its better if she finds comfort sucking her thumb. she is now 11 months and she sucks her thumb only at night and i am really very much worried about her. Hi everyone I'm 25 and I sucked my thumb from the day I was born when the doctor put it in my mouth (to make me stop crying, common thing unfortunately) till I was around 15 or so ... PLEASE !!!!! If you don't want seriously crooked teeth then STOP, just stop.. theres no magic cure, but once you realize how your bad you teeth are being affected , you will stop. My bottom teeth are pushed inward from 15 years of thumb sucking and my tounge doesnt fall correctly, my teeth are in pain from my tounge pushing them out. You have been warned! I have sucked my thumb for as long as I can remember, and I am now 33. I dont think that I will ever stop, eventhough I work as a teaching assistant and have been caught out from time to time, even by students. I am 48 and still sucking my pointing finger. I sucked my thumb as a child and my father made a big deal of it, took me to orthodontist who made me look in a mirror and told me how stupid I looked and said I was going to stop. They wrapped my thumb in gauze and put pepper juice on it. Well, I did stop sucking my thumb, but I started sucking my finger. I stopped when I was 11. When I was 20, I found out my mother was dying of cancer and I was pregnant with my first child. It was all too much for me to handle without something to sooth me, so I started sucking my finger again. It brings such great comfort and it isn't hurting anyone, so what's the big deal. I have since found that there are a lot of adult thumb and finger suckers in my family. Some don't care who see them. I am still too embarrassed to do it in front of non family members, but immediate family all know and could care less. Just thought you might be interested in my story. :)

I am 17 and I always thought I was the only teenager in the world who still sucked their thumb. But then I met my friend Larree and she sucks her thumb more than I do. I don't think it is a big deal as long as you don't do it in public. I still sleep with my baby blanket, too. I just got braces at 32 years old. I Sucked my thumb until the day I got them. I never tried to stop, I never thought I could. But I just did,I stopped. I miss it sometimes, but I won't go back. My teeth weren't as screwed up in my early to mid 20's, so be careful if you like straight teeth! It gets worse as the years go by! I'm glad I am finally going to get smile I never had! You'll only stop when you really want to. I don't think sucking is a bad thing, as long as you don't mind your teeth being screwed up. That's the only downfall as far as I am concerned.

Ever since i have been an adult and have lived alone I suck my thumb whenever I want. I love it. For those of you who are trying to stop sucking i think you should consider not stopping. What is the big deal if you suck? It is relaxing. As far as your teeth are concerned, every time you are done sucking push down on your teeth for about a minute. I have done this for years and I never had braces and my teeth are straight. There are so many horrible things a person can do. So why not be happy and suck away.

Though I was told, when very young, about how my thumb sucking could affect my teeth I didn't care. In fact, I pushed harder since I wanted my teeth out of the way and my mouth made for my wonderful habit. I got my wish and now I can put my thumb in my mouth with hardly any effort in opening it. Babygirl, you might try wearing retainer. I've heard people who suck their thumb before while they have braces wore a retainer afterward and it helped them not suck their thumb. But I haven't tried it so I don't know. I wish you good luck! I've tried without luck.

I've heard that there are people with an addictive personality but I'm not sure that explains thumbsucking or anything. I think people are attached to different smells or sounds. If you want to stop you might try replacing what your doing with something else. Quitting isn't always possible though. I should know, I've tried but other than for a brief amount of time I haven't been able to stop.

Just a suggestion(since I haven't been able to stop) but you might try just going a little by little. If you use your binkie to get to sleep try waiting a half hour or so before you use it. Try to make it a little longer each night. Good luck!

My dad used to slap my thumb out of my mouth when I would least expect it. I'm 38 and still suck my thumb in private and at night. My Significant Other knows. It's no big deal. I NEVER punished my son. Just told him after awhile, it could mess up his teeth. I never sucked my thumb in front of him. He just grew out of it. I think the more a child is punished (FOR DOING WHAT IS NATURAL), the more they hang onto it. If you make it no big deal, it's no big deal. to rednblackbracelets: As for ideas, it depends on when and how much you suck your thumb. If you just suck at night then a glove (firmly attached)MIGHT help. If you suck during the day you also might try using the glove and/or try cutting down little by little. Like, try going without sucking for a half hour for one day during the week and keep adding to that. Just to mention, the glove didn't work for me but everyone's different. Good luck!

I have sucked my thumb since I can remember, I am now 26. Its just a habit that is very soothing and comforting. My husband doesnt care he thinks its cute. My oldest daughter is four and I had her stop sucking her pacifier, because it was starting to effect her bite. It broke my heart, because I know she loved sucking it,as much as I love sucking my thumb! I guess the best way to get the baby out of this habit is just by distracting the baby. Sing a song or play a game to catch the attention of the baby, and slowly remove the finger without ur baby even realising it. forcebly pulling the baby's finger out of his mouth never helps.

I ran across this website during my attempts to stop: very good information, and I recommend all who do such their thumb to go there, and all who are worried about it to go there too. Parents worried about your children: there are two important things to consider. A) Sucking one's thumb is the best stress relief, and will usually benefit the child, unless.... B) he/she is ridiculed, either by you, his/her parents, or family or friends, which will result in a guilty/emotionally unstable person, which is very dangerous. i am a foster mom of identical twin boys, age 2,who both suck their thumbs constantly. they are in care due to domestic issues so at first i didnt have a concern.lately both have cheek sores because they rub their cheeks at the same time with the same hand. this is like a friction sore. we have been putting socks on those hands when sleeping and use positive reminders during the day. keeping their hands messy (painting, sandpile, bubbles)they seem to pay less attention to the thumb. also their eating habits and speech with each other and us has improved quite a bit. good luck to all!

I'm almost 33 and have sucked my thumb for my whole life. After counselling for related issues for 4 months, I was encouraged to stop bashing myself for sucking my thumb. Only my immediate family knows that I do this, and that's because I told them. Anyway, because I don't put so much pressure on myself about it anymore, I hardly ever do it anymore. I'm finding satisfaction in new things in life. However, I still do enjoy a "moment" every once in awhile, and not ashamed of it either. I am 20 and a 'secret thumb sucker' (i only do it when i'm trying to get to sleep or relaxed at home)- after reading the comments on this page I wanted to tell people what my experience of this habit is. I have always sucked my thumb when I am tired or feeling a bit upset even though my family and boyfriend have tried to stop me. I think the worst thing that you can do to a child is make a big scene and draw attention to the fact that they are sucking their thumb - it will only make them self conscious. Although some children will develop 'sticking out teeth' I can honestly say that I havent - i have never worn a brace and in fact, my dentist has always praised me on the straightness of my teeth. It makes me cross when people make such a big thing of thimb sucking because I know in my case it is something I do without really thinking about. I did have a brace when I was a teenager and I do have a slight over bite now but there are worse things in life other than sucking your thumb.

My son is 3months old and has started sucking his fingers, which has made me to worry a lot. When I spoke to the doctor about this, I was told it is the natural process of growth and that is how they learn the coordination between hands and mouth and I should not worry much about it. I feel when he is not given attention he resorts to this sucking and hope he gets out of this habbit very soon

My son is 3months old and has been sucking his middle 2 finger or sometimes thumb since past few weeks. He is not hungry or bored as he gets attention from all of us at home and been feed regularly every 2 to 3 hours. My son began sucking his thumb at 3 months-when I resumed my job and has not stopped sucking his thumb since. He is now 3 and 1/2. This habit really worries me as at times I see it on the upswing. it is indeed a nice article on thumb sucking. i have tried many means to disuade my son of 3 yrs old from thumbsucking but invain. in fact my son starts sucking his thumb before going to sleep. i consulted a doctor who prescribed me a medicine called " femite ". this medicine worked better. the medicine is so bitter in taste that he virtually left sucking. but it is noticed that the habit is again relapsed.

My son is 11months old. He started thumbsucking since he was 3 months old. He sucks his thumb only when he is sleepy. And before putting his thumb in his mouth he needs to hold a stuffed toy or some cloth (like his covering sheet). If he finds nothing, he will hold his T-shirt while putting his thumb in. He can get very restless if he finds nothing to hold on to. At times other than sleeping he never sucks his thumb. My niece got out of her habit when my sister tied gauze bandage around her hand tieing her thumb. This was just before she turned one year old. I would be interested to know others views on this.

My daughter is 4.5 yrs and sucks her index finger. She used to suck two fingers till last year. But she got one finger injured while playing. She gave up that finger and now sucks only one finger. My daughter did not such thumb for first 9 months. But started sucking her thumb at after 9 months. I am at a loss why so? She is 6 yrs. now and has not stopped. We have tried all possible things, like bitter oil/ pastes, bandages, etc, but no use. Then at 4 years of age we made her conscience that she will not be liked if she continues the habit, she responded and it worked, but only for a few months. Then she started sucking under the seets and quilts, now lately we are useing fear of injections and getting her thumb plastered from the doctor etc. I know this is not the right way to handle it. I totally disagree with one thing mentioned in the above article. If the baby needs to suck on the breast after she is full, just t osatitfy her sucking urge, the mother will end up with sore nipples. My baby is 9 days old and she has an unsatisfyable urge to suck all the time. In spite of being a strong opposer to pacifiers, I now dont mind giving my baby one to help my nipples heal so I can feed her better and end my nightmare of sore nipples.

Once accidently I got the taste of it and I felt so nauseous that I decided not to use it again. I try to dstract her attention by giving her some toys. I hope that her habbit will go off soon.

My daughter started sucking thumb when she was 2 mths old and it felt "So CUTE" at that time but now she is past 5 yrs.Earlier we tried to put bandages and a bitter solution on her thumb to get rid of her habit but everything proved useless.Psychologically she is a perfact child .very outgoing and had no lack of attention from both me and my husband so it is more like a pleasure giving addictive habit. Recently we talked to her and promised her a reward if she herself controls thumb sucking.This has definitely worked and though it was very difficult for her for initial 3-4 days..she is not sucking thumb since 13 days and we think she has quite self control. We have kept a score clender and we applaude her every morning. I am sure it will take time to get rid of 5 yr old habit. One thing we would like to say that the child requires proper explaining and encouragement to give up this habit. Do not make an issue out of it.Let the child give it up on it's own.Whenever you see the child with thumb in mouth try to divert im/her into some activity which would require use of hands.And be patient.

My daughter started sucking her thumb when she was barely 2 month. She is now three years old and sucks her thumb only when she is at home. She seems to be gradually giving it up because she has started to go to school, but her teeth have started sticking out. She will have to go in for a dental treatment sonner than I would have liked.
