I've bitten my nails ever since I can remember. Other then some occasional pain when I bit them too short, I've never had a problem, though I know I need to stop. I hate having long nails (they get gross and hard to manage) and biting my nails is the only way I can relieve stress, and goodness knows I have enough of that. I even bite through nail polish.

Hi Emma! Thanks for responding so quickly - great to read your comment! Your hands must look so attractiive with such super nails! I suppose I've always liked bitten nails on girls, as long as I can remember. In primary school I sat next to a girl who had well bitten down nails - they just looked so cute and pretty. We used to do traditional country dancing, and holding hands with her was brilliant - you could feel the absence of nails on her fingers. In my late teens I had a lovely girlfriend who had the most severely bitten nails I've ever seen. She still had tiny bits of nails on her thumbs, but the the nails on her fingers were bitten right down to the roots - where the nail came out from the skin - so there wasn't really any nail visible. Her fingers looked amazing - I don't know how she'd got them down so short. Being touched and caressed by a girl with bitten down nails is just amazing - her fingertips are so lovely and soft and smooth with the nails right down out of the way! I have two female friends at the moment who both have lovely nails - the one girl knows how much I like her nails and will show them to me when she's had a good biting session and they're well down. The other girl's nails are also very attractive and are about 4 - 5 mm long. I know of another girl who has really beautiful nails which are about 2 or 3 mm - absolutely brilliant!!! I'm sure you're nails look fantastic - do you get comments from people who find them attractive? Do your boyfriends like them? Keep chewing!!

Hi Emma. I'm yet another guy who loves bitten down nails on a girl - they just look so pretty! Your fingers must be really beautiful. I love it when the nailbeds have turned into normal skin and the nails are virtually non existant! I can't see what the attraction is in having long nails! It's great that you like biting your nails and enjoy your habit. I have NEVER met anyone who think chewed nails are nice. I have been fighting the problem for 45 years and have used numerous amounts of money on false nails, and cures - all without avail. I have let me nails grow a few times and they are beautiful - then I wake up one morning and they are gone - I get so upset. Lee: Yes, my nails are down to about 2 millimetres - that's about as short as I can get them. There is only a little bit of rough skin above the nail - just one or two millimetres where I've got the nail off. From there to the tip of my fingers (about 6 - 8 millimetres) the skin is lovely and smooth - so my fingertips are nice and smooth and round. Sometimes I paint my fingernails, but not that often, because I soon chew the paint off! I should paint them more perhaps, because I do enjoy the attention of people looking at them. I hardly ever bother painting my toe nails - I mostly wear plimsoles, so my toes are not on show! I'm sure I'll keep on biting - it's really relaxing, and I love tiny nails.

John: Hi! I agree - super tiny nails look so cute - I love the way mine look! Yes - I wish more nailbiters were happy with their nails and didn't see biting as a problem. I bite my thumbnails firstly with my thumbs up, but then do it the other was if it means I can get the nail shorter. On my fingers, I bite firstly with the nails facing down, and then facing up if it means I can get the nails shorter. I often hold the finger of the nail I'm biting, with my other hand. My thumbnails are the same length as my fingernails - they're quite soft, so they're easy to bite.

Tom: Hi! Yes I love watching other nailbiters too - seeing if their nails are really tiny and nice and neat as well. I certainly don't use scissors - my teeth do the job fine! My nails are still the same length - about 2 miilimetres of nail and then a couple of millimetres of rough skin just above the nail, where I've bitten the nail off. I'm quite supple and can get my toe nails in my mouth quite easily. I mostly bite them after I've had a nice long soak in a hot bath, so my nails are really nice and soft, but I often bite them before I go to bed anyway - it's part of the relaxing thing. My toe nails are about the same length as my finger nails.

Helen, I think it's superb you are proud of your wonderfully bitten nails. In my opinion, the shorter the nails the better! Super tiny nails look so cute on women and I wish more nailbiters loved biting them as much as you do. When biting your thumbnails, do you face the thumb up or down? I have seen both techniques used. Lee: Hi - I am proud of my nails - mine are the tinyest I've ever seen! and I do enjoy my habit. I don't think I do the two handed biting in public, I just nibble away at my nails, and do the two handed thing when I'm more serious about getting my nails right down like when I'm at home or in other comfortable surroundings. Oh! my boyfriend says I do do two handed biting in public, and people do give me funny stares! I suppose when I'm doing that, I'm really concentrating on my nails, so I don't notice people looking at me. I don't really ever miss having nails, because I've never had any. After adopting the 2 handed method of biting my nails, they are really short now, the shortest ever and my mom didn`t think it was possible to bite so much. I do look at them between biting, not particularly to maintain the length or shape of my nails - I just like to bite them down as short as I can get them, so they tend to be chewed right down to the last little bit! hey there, im 15 and a half and for as long as i can remember i have bitten the skin around my nails...i just cant stop, i have never in my life bitten the nail itself (in fact i think it hurts my teeth to do it lol) but i always bite the skin. iv always had really nice long nails and i have no dramas in growing them, but then i will give myself a french manicure and then i look at the skin around my nails and its horrible! and my fingers are always sore and infected....sometimes i even make them bleed! i know its bad but i just cant stop biting and picking, im trying a new method, im booking in to get my nails done professionally and then i will chew gum as iv heard that this helps. its gotten to the stage where i dont even know that im doing it half the time or if i do i just think "no stop!" and then i will start again a few minutes later, i always have to have my fingers in my mouth!! its discusting!! so i know how all you people out there feel who have the same problem...its a horrible habbit! wish me luck! xx <3

thnx all for ur comments, they really inspired me into stopping nail biting. after seven years of actually biting my nails, i have come to a conclusion that its all worthless.. you think nail biting helps u calm down or wtever from the stress but it doesnt; in fact, it makes u want to bite them even more and also u allow germs to ur body. i tried twice to stop biting them and it worked for a while bt then got bk to my habit (which was awful). everytime u try to chew them, apply the biting tasting nail polish.. its just a psychological thing.. when u really want to stop biting ur nails, surf the internet and look for nail biting pictures and articles.. it really helps.. its been a week now since i have stopped and i feel great!! good luck everyone!! and remb.. I've been a nail biter all my life, and like you Nina, I bite and bite and bite. The difference is that I love my habit and I bite my nails down as low as I can get them - I love the way they look. They're down to about 2 - 3 mm long! Also, the ends of my fingers are lovely and smooth and rounded with the nails down out of the way. Also, like you Nina, I find nail biting extremely relaxing and I bite all evening and in the daytime as well. I never try to hide my nails, in fact sometimes I paint them. A lot of guys find really tiny nails really attractive - I work in a cafe and its amazing how often guys tell me my nails are really cute. So don't worry about your nails. Having long nails is just a social stereotype thing.

I am 27 and have been an addicted nail biter since I was about 6 or 7. I have tried to stop many times, all with no success. Also, not only are my fingernails chewed out of existance but my fingers are extremely thick and rough as I work in a garden nursery. I've been biting since a child. Not all biting is due to nervousness. It can be due to motivation (especially when you start biting and you actually want to finish a nail before you stop). Try replacing the nail-biting behaviour with another kind of behaviour, one that keeps your teeth and your fingers from interacting with one another. well - my sister and i were both really bad at biting our nails... and you know what got us to stop? getting fake nails! they are really bad for your nail in general - but that is if you have pretty nails to start with.- not us. we each wore them for like a month and a half, makng sure to go everyother week to get them redone. we both LOVED having pretty nails without waiting for them to grow.. or the weird feeling of having alot of the "white part." when we stopped wearing the fake nails, we had them profesionally removed. granted - our nails were thin.. but they were a decent length! and... the better part: we werent't in the habit of biting them anymore!!!Now i keep my nails fairly short, but long enough to do a french manicure. Although it is often referred to as a nervous habit, it really does not have much to do with anxiety. Do not fret that there is something wrong with your child. After the age of 15, the majority of children simply out grow the habit. The incidence of nail biting declines with age, while anxiety levels for most rise with age. So then, how does anxiety correlate to nail biting? I believe that it doesn't. There is no medical data anywhere in the world to support the association, nor is nail biting any more prevalent in occupations deemed to be more stressful (police, lawyers, etc).

There is some support for the theory that it could be learned behavior (from parents for example) or even hereditary (identical twins have a 4x higher nail biting incidence rate than fraternal twins). It might even be leftover behavior from thumb or finger sucking as a child. Again, it has never been proven that it stems from anxiety, this may just be a notion that has persisted throughout time without any sound medical support or clinical studies. My 8-year old daughter bites her nails. Our home is happy and healthy also, except that this habit grosses me out so severely that it affects her life adversely. She even gnaws down her toe nails in bed. Fingers into the mouth is the number one way to catch a cold or flu, and sticky fingers all over my things transmits all her colds to the rest of the family. I bit my nails until I was 39 years old. I finally stopped when my daughter began to bite her nails because I did. If you make sure to clip them short and keep them filed smooth, it will help. My main tool, though, was thin cotton gloves - I wore them when I watched TV, drove, worked on the computer - anytime I usually bit my nails. The gloves kept me from biting, and after a few weeks, the nails had grown out and, as long as I keep them smooth, I can generally keep them from being bitten. Occasionally, I find I've bitten one nail off (usually during some stress), and I immediately clip the rest short and get out the gloves until the bitten one has grown out. I also use a worry stone when my hands need to fidget.It can be done! Keep trying!

I have been nail biting since I was 5 years old. I'm 33 now and still suffering from this habit. As a lawyer, I always have meetings and find myslef hiding my hands under the table or under the paper so that they cannot be seen. I think its not so important for guys, but for a lady its really important to have nice hands and it is really horrible to have nails like mine!! I have tried and tried and tried to break this habit. I have read so many articles and understood that there is really nothing I can do about it. I think most of what is said here is true. The brain gives the order and the hand goes to your mouth... and you all know what happens next. Your parent's harassing you for this does not help either... if anything it makes matters worse. I have been able to give it up from time to time though. The way to do it is to get acrylic nails. Its expensive but definitely worth it. Try it for about six months and then have them taken off. Keep your nails filed and polished after that and it will help. I broke the habit for over 2 years but as soon as 2 of my nails broke I started again! This time I just glued on some artificial nails for 10 days. I've taken them off now and have short nails which I have filed and put on nail polish. I'm ok so far.It really makes me miserable! I wish there was a way to really stop.I sympathise with each and every one of you. :(

I'm 32 years old and have been a nail-biter for as long as I can remember. While I have been successful at growing them out in the past, I have always returned to the same bad habit. When I have allowed my nails to grow in the past, they were a relative novelty since there are generally bitten stubs. Once thing I've noticed is that even when nails are finally allowed to grow, they will be quite weak and brittle. I find that if I'm on a 'long nail' cycle, I generally like to keep them as long as possible. The problem is, when one breaks or splits, I start picking at it again until they're all pretty muc bitten again. My advice: Once you've managed to kick the habit, keep your nails even, smooth, and farily short. This will prevent them from breaking, and will reinforce the habit of cutting and filing nails. If you're still successful after a year, then by all means grow them out. By that time, you should have gotten a handle on your bad habit.

My parents scolded me when I was little, but I enjoyed my habit and secretly indulged in it while they weren't around. Now, my nails are thin, mishapen, and have unsightly ridges and rough edges. My cuticles are all ripped and dry and bleed frequently--after I bite all of my nails off I go for the skin around them. Finally I thought of trying the stuff they sell in the pharmacy to help stop nail biting and it has worked for a year now. The brand we bought is called bite it.
