Wall Murals
You don't need to hire an interior decorator or overhaul furniture to give your child's room a new look. Transform her room by painting a wall mural.
Does your child want a new look to her bedroom? Transform her room this weekend by painting a mural on the wall. Your child's bedroom will look fabulous, and will be the envy of her friends.
Painting a mural is not as difficult as you may think. Even someone with basic sketching and painting skills will be able to do a fairly decent job.
Here's what you need to do:
First, select a design or an image you want to paint. Make sure it is a fairly basic and uncomplicated design. Let your children help in selecting an image. After all, the mural is for their room and they will have to live with the design. It is a good idea to select an image based on a theme. For example, if Harry Potter is a craze with your children, you can select an appropriate image, and then follow the theme through the rest of the room as well.
Once you have chosen your design, you need to transfer it to the wall. You can either project it on to the wall or use a grid and draw it to scale. If you are good at sketching, you can even draw it freehand.
In order to project it on to the wall, you may need to enlarge or reduce your picture and copy it on to a transparency. Most stores that offer photocopying services will do this for you. You can then project it on the wall using a projector.
If you are using a grid, first draw one for your image, then adjust the scale and transfer the grid on to the wall. It then becomes easier to copy the image.
Next, select the colours. Try muted tones the first time, so mistakes are not glaring. You could use acrylic paint or interior latex paint for large areas.
Begin by painting the background. Then paint larger areas using a wide or flat paintbrush, and add the details and outlines at the end, with a round paintbrush. You can also blend colours by painting one colour over the other before the bottom layer dries up.
Priya, an interior designer based in Kochi shares these tips:
- "It is important to select an appropriate place for a wall mural in your house. You will need a spot that has the least exposure to direct sunlight and contact. Doors of bedrooms, central halls without windows and passages under the stairs are good places for a mural.
- If you are using acrylic paints, you may have to give more than one coat of paint, as it may get transparent as it dries.
- When you draw outlines, make sure you hold your hands steady or you could end up with a rather shabby mural. Get help with outlines if you are not confident."
Be patient, and don't rush a design. Take your time. After all, the mural will last many years, and is worth the effort.
