Just wondering if any of you could help me on how and what they done. please. Name: BLim Country: Malaysia Comment: I'm seventeen years old, and just had my "tongue-tie release" surgery (as they termed it) today (as of the time of writing this). I immediately felt much greater flexibility of movement of my tongue, and could touch the roof of my mouth much more easily than before, and for the first time in my life I was able to stick out my tongue and see it without the aid of a mirror! However, that was until the numbness of the anaesthetic wore off, and I writhed in pain as I attempted my first meal after it. Fortunately, painkillers help greatly, and I feel fine now. I mainly decided to get this surgery because I've always felt a little awkward, and a little worried about how my kissing skills would turn out, heh. And I also think that even if one can enunciate words perfectly fine with the tongue-tied condition, getting it removed can make speech easier and clearer (I was a bit frustrated that I randomly mispronounced certain words or slurred my speech or started mumbling when talking fast or loudly). I think it's more of a confidence think than anything though, I'll have to wait and see what happens. Name: julie Country: U.S.A. Comment: i guess i see where everyones coming from, im a teen and yeah its a little embarressed to stick out my tongue. but im not sure if i would wanna go through with a procedure like that. ive never had a problem talking, in fact i have a great reading score. i cant exactly roll my r's but i can eat and lick my lips. i think the procedure is better for people with actual frenulum problem, to the point where they cant lick their lips. but idk ive never kissed anyone and kindof worried if people will judge me based on if im a good kisser or not. i cant stick my tongue out far but i still can stick it out. so im not sure what to do. ive never met anyone with the same problem as me and my friends had all made fun of me for it and told me i wont be a good kisser. so yeah i am self consoius about it. please give me some feedback please its not an easy subject for me. Name: BRAD Country: United Kingdom Comment: i was tongue tied but i had the operation (lingual frenectomy) today, i had it done with the laser so i didnt need stitches and i dont know if it hurts less with lasers but after the numbing wore off all i was left with is a dull ache so its not as bad as i expected. Though my tongue tie didnt affect my speech, or kissing as i have been told by girlfriends ;P i would reccomend having this done, it feels great to be able to lick an ice cream properly, just the silly little things ^^ Name: A Mum Country: United Kingdom Comment: Last night i sat and read threw every post as my 4 yr old son was having his tongue tie op today. I read these post and was filled with horror at what i was about to subject him toi and nearly stopped his surgery, But after a little pesuasion from his Dad we went through with the surgery and it was fine and i must stress that.... After 15 mins he was sat up in bed eating cerial and looking proudly in a mirror at his new longer tongue, So to anyone in the same position i was in last night try not to focuss on the bad horror stories posted on here and go with what you think is the right decision for you or your chils Name: katieann Country: United Kingdom Comment: im tounge tied and have been since i was born, does it hurt to get it cut, i dont know if i can french kiss because its real embarrasing. Name: Lucy Country: United Kingdom Comment: Hey, i'm nearly 15, and have never kissed a boy. I don't know if i'm just ugly, or unapproachable, but boys have chatted me up and stuff. I am, obviously, tongue-tied, and am worried about kissing becasue I don't know i can properly. The comments on here are mixed, suggesting that there are different cases of tongue-tied, some are more severe. I have never had problems with speech or anything, I'm a complete chatterbox, so hopefully it should all be ok when the time comes. Name: Natasha Country: Canada Comment: Im 16 almost 17 and i have a tied tounge .. alot of people think its cool and weird.. i dont reallly care much. I'm very happy to hear from people that it is not impossibe! So I'm going to experiment and then decide if I want it changed. No way am I going to be 16 and never been kissed! I'll talk to my doctor after I get my braces off which will be soon. So glad I found this site! Everyone would always ask me to show them my tongue and I would watch a horrified look come across their face even though it's not gross they just think it's wired. One of my friends even asked me how I was supposed to make out and I couldn't tell her I just told her that I'm not an alien. I'm even so embarased about this that I don't even talk to my best friends about it so thanks for the venting opportunity!! Name: Country: U.S.A. Comment: I never realized how many people were tongue tied like me. A couple of days ago i went to the doctor and got it surgically cut. It went faster than i expected. The only bad part about getting it done is that it hurts to eat and swallow your food, and it feels chubby because its still kinda numb. But now im happy i got it done and i cant wait untill the pain goes away:) Name: Charlotte Country: United Kingdom Comment: I was also born witha tongue tie, it didn't really bother me, my speech was fine, i was afraid about kissing also, and with me being a keen and high grade singer, i decided it would be in my best interest to haev itremoved. I tell you , i was petrified, i hate injections so i wasn't looking forward to it one bit. I got to the hospital, its so quick and easy now, its all done by laser I had three injections, which did hurt but was over really quickly. Then he lasered away for a couple ofminutes, i didn't feel anything, except from smelling my skin burning , which was quite revolting. It was numb for a good hour and a half where i was waggling my tounge round at anyone and anything :D i loved it. Until the anethestic ran out, and i am still a day later in severe discomfort, i can stickmy tongue out-- whih is advised to build up the muscld. I am hoping it will get easier as the days go by aseven swallowing is difficukt. I still am positive and looking forward to the new me :D i would recommend it, as the pain i only for a couple of days and lets face it... paracetamol eases it loads!! hope this helps xx Name: acmilanboi Country: Canada Comment: I jus had it cut recently and the surgery itself was fine. It was after the numbness wore off that the pain started kicking in. It was pretty bad and couldn't eat anyting for 2 days. Name: Me x Country: United Kingdom Comment: Im 26 and I recently had my tongue cut, but more on that in a minute. For those of you worried about kissing, I really wouldn't worry about it. Ive been told several times I'm a fantastic kissers *blows own trumpet* There's nothing attractive about ramming your tongue down someones throat, just, learn to work with what you have, you can still move it, flick and stroke the other persons tongue with it. Howeverrrr I hated it to the point where I just decided to get it cut, Im quite old to be having the procedure, but until about a year or so ago, i didn't even know it was a medical condition. I was SO paranoid about it. Not being able to do something simple like lick an ice cream/lolly even certain things in the bedroom. Also, speech. I struggled with a few words, and if I was talking to long, Id end up slurring my speech, other than that though, Id say it was definitely more in my head(enough to get it cut, il add), bar one or two people who DID take the michael, no one noticed, and since Ive had the bloody thing cut EVERYONE has noticed. Unless you have a severe case, I don't think it's worth having it cut. I was in AGONY once the numbness wore off. Its been just over 2 weeks now, the last stitch dissolved yesterday, but I still have the scarring which needs to heal, and I cant stick my tongue out STILL. Hoping that's going to improve ¬_¬ I wasn't able to eat solid food for a good few days - and any movement caused me to spasm in pain. In 2001 I had an operation which was done under General Anaesthetic and it hurt for a few days which meant I survived on "cream of chicken soup" and icecream! It helped. I went back to school the next day, but was not alowed to do any activites (e.g. playing at breaktime and P.E) incase I fell and hurt myself. After it healed I could still not really stick my tongue out suprisingly. A few years later (2006 ish) It started hurting again. So I went to the doctor and they sed that I did not need to worry. then last week i went back because it had become even more painful. They are doing another op next week. The doctor said that she has never seen it come back before. And so don't get worried, because it is rare. I am having it done under heavy sedation and locally. I am scared but I know that as a result of the operation I will be able to move it alot more. Don't worry anybody that is planning to have the procedure. You will hopefully see a difference. The only thing I am not looking forward to is having to survive on liquids. But I suppose I will have to eat Icecream. LOL ! Good luck fellow tongue tied people! Name: tonguetied girl Country: U.A.E. Comment: hello all.. I cant tell you all how reassuring it was to stumble upon this page to know that there are lots of other people dealing with the same dilemma as I was bout being Tongue Tied!!! I thought I was freak basically for so long as I used to show my tongue to my friends and others and noone else seemed to have teh same kind of tongue as me and more often that not, all my friends used to be disgusted by my wierd and short tongue..!!! anyway....my frenulum caused me hardly any difficulties whatsoever and I could have gone on about my life and business without ever having it looked after but it was sumthign that just bothered me for a long time so for me personally I just had to get it snipped. Once I get something into my head like that ...I just need to get it done! I woke up one day and it was sore, I mentioned it to a friend who was visiting adn he said his other friend had got hers snipped a few months before hand, which got me thinking about getting my done. I wasnt sure by being an adult if they would perform this kind of surgery on you or not. I spoke to my doctor and she recommended me to a Maxilofacial dental surgeon...I had my consultation last SAturday adn he performed the surgery the same day!!! If I'd have known I was going to get it done that exact day I would have made sure Id have eaten a huge meal beforehand as IM on my 4th day off work now and still cannot barely eat a thing!! SCrambled eggs adn mash potatoe is about it..!! I am not in pain but it is definetley sore when i talk for a long period of time (20 mins maybe?) and when i eat sometimes. If I leave my tongue doing nothing then its fine. The surgery itself is fine...I wouldnt sweat it about that. They just numb the area, the nurse holds your tongue with a forslips, the doc snips away I guess, but you cant feel anything...its just a lil frightening and uncomfortable but thats all, It took about 15 mins and it was over. Rightnow I have 2 stitches up in my tongue, and 8 stitches running down my lower tongue and more on the bottom of my mouth. I have taken 5 days off work as Im a teacher adn theres no way I can talk with this adn I dont want to strain my tongue or burst the stitches. He said they are disolvable stitches adn I have to go back to him next week to see how I am doing. I am on antibiotics ( Dalacin 300 mg), using a gel over the wound, ponstin for painkillers ( although i dont really need them know so much) and rinsing with salt and water to avoid infection. My friend said his friend that got it done, was off for 5-6 days.Although my doctor here said I should be fine in a day or two, although for me , it always takes me longer to recover from any ailments that I have had, I am just a slow recoverer I guess....but with stitches down my tongue, Im not taking any chances. I hope this helps anyone who is thinking of getting it done. I would just go for it, make sure you can get a week off work and do it, I had my wisdom teeth out last year which were infected and this is a walk in teh park compared to that experience! ps. You don't have to stick your tongue into your partner every time u kiss, there are like 100 types of kiss, French kissing can be done with minimal tongue involvement. So if kissing is your work, no, being tongue tied is not a disadvantage, it is actaully an advantage! Anyways I got my tongue corrected today, I am going to see if it makes any difference. I had it done on a local. The needles before hand do sting slightly but after that there is no pain. They use a small metal tool that looks a bit like a nail clipper. I couldnt feel a thing and i was in and out of the theatre within 5 minutes. It hurts for a few days and i drank smoothies but hey, who doesn't like smoothies! I recommend that you get it done and the younger the better as it will heal faster and look more normal. If your child has a tongue tie get it cut! Name: mom feeling guilty Country: U.S.A. Comment: My daughter is 12 and has tongue-tie. The pediatrician said to wait and see if there were problems. None with eating or speech so we just left it. Now I'm worrying as others have said that when she's gets (much !) older she'll be self-conscious about kissing. If I had thought of that when she was younger, I would have just had it done. My fear now is that she may develop speech problems. Did anyone who posted, even those who had lisps right after the surgery, need speech therapy for ongoing speech problems. I feel guilty for not taking care of it when she was younger and don't know if I should ask the dentist/doctor now. I am 15 and I, like most of you all, have no problems with my tongue-tie except when kissing, it makes me feel so self conscious and I avoid it at all costs. It's stretched out a lot but I still really want it cut. I'm not sure who to go to about it though, because I feel weird and shallow at my age asking my parents to let me get my tongue-tie cut, because the only reason is purely for kissing, there's no medical problem. My dentist is also our family friend, and I would also feel weird asking him about cutting it. Any tips? Name: Ms. Drama4Life Country: India Comment: My 4 1/2 old son was tongue tied until a few months ago. I was unaware of the surgery until I went to get him evaluated thinking his baby like speech was due to a developmental problem being that he was premature. Afterwards, he was referred to the speech therapy and she notice the tongue tie... thank goodness. He received the surgery and recovered completely in less than a week. We decided on the surgery because he was having so much difficultly pronouncing his words even though he knew exactly what they were. My son began to use his hands to express what he wanted from others and that hurt me deeply. Since then he talks non stop, is more outgoing, and much more happier. His preschool teacher has noticed a major chance in his social skills. Don't get me wrong he has a long way to go but there's a big change. For what I've been told speech problems due to tongue tie require a min of 12 mons therapy. It's a good thing his elementary school offers it without labeling children by automatically placing in special education. Name: nfishr Country: U.S.A. Name: Jay Country: Netherlands Comment: Hi; I had my frenectomy done quite late in life. Actually it started bothering me as soon as I started being sexually active. I couldn't move my tongue around easily and sticking it out as far as I could would mean having an inflamed frenulum for days afterwards. So now at 40, I finally had it done 5 days ago. The surgery itself was absolutely painless. But the specialist warned me that it'd be sore for a few days and that it was important to start exercising it immediatelly on a daily basis. The sutures look bad and my salivary glands are very pronounced underneath my tongue. Eating is still a nightmare and in the morning the pain is definitely an issue. But what really makes me happy and keeps me positive is that there already is a definite improvement. I can move my tongue around freely, extend it through both corners, touch the roof of my mouth with my mouth open, and have gained at least 1 cm on vertical protrusion. It just feels much more mobile and I'm glad that the frenulum isn't an issue anymore-apart from the spot where it was before being painful at the moment!-. Although it still hurts and the sutures are still there, I already feel better about my ' lingual abilities' . So I do my exercises 4 times a day, grimacing through the pain. Can't wait for it to heal. Don;t know why I waited so long to have it done! My advice: have it done, by a specialist, ask a lot of questions beforehand, don't expect to become a humanoid snake afterwards and be patient about the healing process! Name: dfbvgsd Country: U.S.A. I hear the injections really hurt & it's painful afterwards, which I am nervous about. Can someone please convince me or give me any kind of reassurance. Name: J Country: U.S.A. Comment: My son just turned 5 and had his surgery 2 days ago. Like everyone else, I was filled with anxiety and hoped that having this done was the right decision. He never had any eating problems and his speech is fine but it's something we decided would be beneficial to him. We went to a surgical center we had the best possible experience. I was given scrubs and allowed in the operating room until he fell asleep. By the time I got back into my regular clothes and walked to the waiting room, the Dr. arrived about 5 min. later. The surgery was incredibly fast and when we went to the post-op room, my son was in a chair, eating an ice pop and talking to anyone who'd listen. After the surgery, he had 1 dose of regular tylenol and didn't need anything else. I hope this will help put some minds at ease! Comment: I am a 24 year old female who just had my tongue clipped 3 days ago. My dentist suggested I do it last year but I didn't think it was that serious, so I put it off. When I attended my 6 months check-up for new year he brought it up again, this time he said, "I strongly advice you to do it", so I did the next day. I have to admit I was nervous my mom freaked out because she could not attend visit with me, so my dad went with me. I have to say at first I was scared, then nervous, but that subsided and I had the surgery. First I had to rub some nasty tasting stuff on bottom of my mouth, then the dentist told me to close my eyes, he did no want me to see the needle, so I did, it stung at first then of course your tongue is numb. I think I took total of 3 injections before my tongue was numb. After that the procedure was started, mine was done with laser, only thing I did not like was the smell, of my tissue being burned, but other than that it was ok. I do no have dissolvable stitches so I have to go back to have them removed and to make sure it is healing properly. I honestly was shocked that I have been tongue-tied all my life and none of my previous dentists suggested I have the procedure. Anyways, it is not as bad as many think it is. Yes it is true the first day after it makes you think why did I do this again, but after you take some pain meds it will go away. I would suggest that if anyone has this condition of which after researching found out I inherited from my dad to do it, it will change your life not alot but it is small enough to make a big difference. Thanks for taking the time to read this, hope it helps someone who is unsure as I was at one point in time. Name: Jai Country: U.S.A. I was always scared of getting it clipped and was unsure of the whole procdure i thought i might be expensive or might have alot of pain afterwards. But i finally got the guts to do it at age 17, today is 8/18/06, during the surgery nothing really hurt besides the first few shots and then when the doctor was putting the dissolvable stiches in it also somewhat hurt. Its been about 12 hours since i have had the surgery and i still cant eat anything besides drink liquids, i can barely talk and when i do it hurts, and i cant stick out my tongue or really move it around. I am worried how long the dissolvable stiches last, i thought it was about 3-4 days until they went away but after reading this article and everyones comment i am kind of scared of how long it is, so if anyone knows pleaseeee tell me, my email is pvsurfrdude88@yahoo. I also never heard of having it done with a laser but that seems like a great idea but probably expensive so i am not to sure, but my surgery costed about 250 then another 68 dollars for codeine [painkillers] so its pretty cheap but yea if anyone knows how long disolving-stitches stay in your mouth pleaseee tell me thanks :] Name: sara Country: U.S.A. Now that the tie has been released ... the tongue actually feels much easier to move around, and I can stick my tongue out longer than before. At least I am able to touch the roof of my mouth. So, I would definitely recommend doing the frenectomy. I just pulled out the rest of the stitches from my mouth today. It would actually dissolve, but there was a knot, so I just pulled it out. Anyway, it doesn't hurt. But there's one thing though ... I do still feel kinda numb at the bottom of my tongue .. I guess it'll take a while for that to disappear. Name: Rich Country: united kingdom Comment: Well folks I went to the hospital yesterday and had the operation. They sat me in a dentist chair and injected my tongue with 3 local anesthetics. The first injection absolutely killed, but as soon as the numbness kicked in the other injections were just a breeze. Once my mouth was completely numb the doctor continued with the operation. The operation took no more than ten minutes. After the op I felt no pain except that my tongue was very swollen so speech was extremely difficult. Having a swollen tongue made swallowing very difficult, so expect to dribble a bit after the operation and expect to starve all night. I am writing this after my first night sleep. I have woken up at the crack of dawn with my mouth in pain. Its a pitty the local cant last longer LOL. I have taken some pain killers and within 15 minutes the pain has settled. Even though my tongue is still swollen and I find swallowing difficult, I do feel better. I will try and keep you all posted in the next couple of days with my progress. Name: blueblue Country: australia Comment: Know the feeling well. I had a tied tongue up until the time my wife complained about clitoral stimulation had to push my mouth in to get close which annoyed her immensely. My mum was always aware i had a tied tongue and i did stutter and had a slight lisp i suppose. So i had the job done about five years ago by a doctor who cut in so far but he became a bit squeamish and probably did not do the full job. I recently had a go myself and further cut into the frenulum and gave myself a bit more relief. Wife had still complained about lack of clitoral stimulation. I now have a clear gap between lips and tongue tip. My recommendation is get it fixed because my speech improved and my general confidence. Name: Rich Country: united kingdom Comment: I am 24 and have always been consious of my Tongue Tie. Today I decided to go to the hospital to chat things through with the Doctor. After a lengthy chat with the Doc I have decided to go ahead with the operation next month. The doctor will snip away my frenulum and then stitch it up. (Thank god here in the UK are tax goes on the NHS, therefore its completely free) According to the Doc, my frenulum will heal up in about a week, but it will take about 2 weeks for the stitches to dissolve. I have never had any oral or speech problems due to my Tongue Tie. To be honest it never really affected my kissing either because I am not a tongue person anyway. The only problem I had was during Cunnulingus. I was able to make my ex girlfriend climax without any problems, but sometimes my frenulum would be really painful afterwards. Anyway, I hope the op goes well and I will try and let you know how it all goes. Name: Fushiryo Country: usa Comment: 22/m/usa- No problems with kissing, only the tip of the tongue need touch your partener's (tongue thrust all the way in my mouth? yuck!). My main concern is oral stimulation. The women I've been with all say it's wonderful, but I've a sneaking suspicion it could be better. Plus, the frenulum rubbing against my lower teeth causes me some discomfort (my tongue reaches roughly 1 1/2 centimeter; enough to barely clear the pink of my lower lip). Thinking about surgery. Anyone had any experience in this? Jewel... meat is bad for you, that peanut butter has more than enough protein to make him grow up strong and healthy. I was at the doctors one day about being ill and as we were there I asked my mum to mention my tongue tie. It wasn't causing me any pain or speech impediments it was just annoying me because it was different. (I was also rather worried about french kissing!!) The doctor said she would refer me to the hospital and i was extremely pleased. I was put under a general anesthetic which meant they just put a needle into my hand and the next thing I knew I was awake in the bed without my annoying tongue tie anymore. The operation took about 5 minutes and I had no pain afterwards. It was a little bit sensitive and there was a white mark for a few days but that soon wore off. Now I can stick my tongue out so much easier; it's not as long as normal tongues but it has definitely improved. I can touch the roof of my mouth with my tongue when my mouth is open but I am still really worried about kissing so if anyone could reassure me that would be great!! I found it very difficult to get the medical profession to recognise this condition as a feeding problem due to the fact he would feed from a bottle. for the first 6 weeks he fed on expressed breast milk at which point I managed ( with a lot of hard work and perseverance on my part) to have the tie cut. it was done in less than a minute with no anesthetic and resulted in a very small amount of blood loss. From what I understand this proceedure is usually only carried out if the tie affects speech. However, from statistics it would seem that speech difficulties are more common than not. it is also worth noting that the tongue tie was not spotted in the hospital but by the visiting health nurse. from the little experience i have had in this area i would strongly recommend having the proceedure carried out as early as possible and so prevent a more painful and traumatic event in your childs future, not to mention the possible side effects of speech. A colleague of mine had his tongue cut about 40 years ago. He couldn't speak properly after that, so he had to go to a logopedist. For me it is almost a year now that I went to the surgeon to get my tongue-tie cut. The first few hours after the procedure you will face speach problems, at least I had, because you lose control over your tongue due to anasethesia. After that I notice that my l's got a little longer than usual. The thrilled r (I am Dutch) got easier. The English fricative r was more of a problem, because my tongue went too much backwards. By practicing the English r, you can unlearn this habit. Now I don't have problems. The tongue-tie caused me to have a laminal s (British, female US or German s) instead of an apical one (Greek, Spanish, Dutch s) although I am Dutch. Possibly my mother spoke with a laminal s, too, but my s is really hissing. This is usual to tongue-tied Dutch people, but I never learned the apical s. I know this is a bit too much linguistic stuff, but speach problems are closely related to linguistics. I can stick my tongue out about 3 cm (more than an inch) farther, but often stick it farther out than I think, I do. I am now talking (when I talk - I try to avoid it) in a very weird way, not being able to pronounce things right, and the pain is still there. I'm drinking liquids, but even that makes the tongue a bit sore. It is a better today than yesterday. I wasn't put under, but due to local anathesia felt no pain during the procedure. Now I can see there are stitches (dissolvable), and while there is redness under the skin beneath the tongue, no actual bleeding. I was told only liquids for three days, then after three days I should try to move my tongue and exercise it. At this point I am trying to avoid moving it due to pain (there isn't much pain when I keep it still), and not wanting to disturb the stitches. At 21/2, the Navy pediatrician decided he was autistic (without having noticed the severe tongue tie)because my son was not speaking. I think due to the tongue tie my tongue was stronger in different ways for example I use either side of my tongue to check my teeth for food etc." You don't have to worry about "losing" tricks after the procedure. Some tongue-tricks can even be improved. A real free tongue feels very unusual, but you will get familiar with it pretty soon. It depends whether your movement abilities did improve. Jamie: "I am 16 years old and have a problem saying my R do you think that it can help me be able to talk normal if I get my tongue clipped and how much is the cost?" Well, I am not sure whether your r will improve. I am a Dutch, so my r is different than the English r. My tongue trills easier, but my tongue went too much backwards when I tried to say the English r (which is a fricative, not thrilled as in Spanish or Russian). But now I can say the English r properly. Jake: "so ive just been looking onto getting rid of the horable little thing, but my parents keep telling me that if i get it cut that i will regret it because of all the excruciating pain." That is a pretty thin argument for not doing it. It does hurt the first few days, but after that the pain disappears. Talking about Gene Simmons, after the surgery your tongue won't be as long as his, but in my case, I can stick my tongue 3 cm (little more than an inch) farther out than I could before the surgery. Now I like looking at my tongue (that is clean most of the time), before I disliked my tongue. Jenipher: "I will say that it's now Tuesday, and my son still says his tongue is sore..." Of course he says it still hurts. It takes about 10 days, before the pain is really gone. When he was 2 months old we had it snipped the tinest bit. The DR was very hard to find but through a local breast feeding class I was eventually led to her. She recomended starting the clipping process very small, allowing the tounge a point to naturally stretch and seperate from. Her concern was clipping to the prefered spot and having it stretch past that into the part where the frenulum actually ancors the tounge, and causing even more speech and eating problems. It is easier to remove a frenulum than create one that is missing.... He is over one year old now and his tounge is a lot looser than when he was born but if it doesn't loosen up more by the time he is two (and really learning to speak)I think we will go in for another little little snip. It took less than 2 minutes with no bleeding. Since learning about this my husband and I have realized that his tounge is shorter than average and he has a slight speech problem, nothing noticable unless you know to look for it. He doesn't open his mouth very wide to enunciate his words when he is speeking. Under his tounge, his frenulem is not a straight thin thread like mine but has a few small bunched up lumps that look like scar tissue from previous rips and stretches throughout his life. It is a delecate balance. Good luck to all! Name: Helen Country: united kingdom Comment: I am 28 and tongue tied. Name: Jenipher Country: usa Comment: My son will be five in June. He had a "severe" tongue tie (frenulum went to about 6mm from the tip of his tongue) until last Thursday, when he had an operation. It was a success. He nursed until he was two, and didn't appear to have a problem with it (like is often the case). But his speech was being affected (mostly th and l). The surgeon we went to did say that it was good to wait until his age (or older), and many ENTs won't do it on kids any longer unless it poses a health risk. He had a "z-plasty" type surgery, where the sutures are done in a zig-zag line, since sometimes scar tissue will contract and harden, basically shortening (shrinking) the original result. This way, the "z" shape is like an accordian scar (best way I can think of to explain it). I will say that it's now Tuesday, and my son still says his tongue is sore, some foods are easier for him to eat. I will have to get him in for a little speech therapy until he gets used to the new mobility of his tongue, but he's been a little trooper! jsmariposa@aol.com Name: Lea Country: usa Comment: i was wondering i want my tounge pierced, but my mom said no not for another year and she said that theres alot of stuff that goes with it and i told her if i didnt like it all i would half to do is take it out, but i want to know if it hurts and what are some side affects if you could plz email me at omycathatesyouo@yahoo.com thank you and i would like to discuss this further! It has answerfed several questions which I had since I have a tongue tie. This is a summary of the book from Amazon: "This book is a guide to the diagnosis and treatment of Ankyloglossia (tongue tie) and is the first publication to explore this subject comprehensively. This book explains that tongue tie is real and proceeds to recommend an assessment method to judge the severity of the condition and to determine when surgical intervention is warranted. The book covers a wide range of facts: from the historical antecedents of present day attitudes; through the largely unrecognized and often devastating effects of the disability; to the purely practical skills of diagnosis and management of the condition." Name: Samantha Country: australia Comment: I'm 23 and am having my tongue tie along with four wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. I have perfect speech and do not have any problems eating, although I seem to eat a lot slower than everyone else, however I think it is better for your health to not rush your food anyway. I love my tongue and am able to do many tongue-tricks that I invented in kindergarten and still perform at parties etc to this day. I think due to the tongue tie my tongue was stronger in different ways for example I use either side of my tongue to check my teeth for food etc. I have never been made fun of for my tongue tie and I show it to most people (if they ask why I'm a slow eater or why I can do tongue tricks). I've had braces and dental work etc, but it was only when I visited a surgeon regarding the removal of my wisdom teeth that I'd ever heard of the removal of a tongue tie. I was told it was a very common procedure and when I said I'd have a think about it (I really do love my tongue) the surgeon was quite shocked and said he's never come accross anyone with such a significant tie who did not have it removed. I asked 'why do people have them removed' and he said I'd never really used my tongue and that he could touch his back molars with the tip of his tongue. After thinking about it for almost a year and discussing it with lots of people (including my mum who never knew it was tied and has said I was very quiet in early childhood) I've decided to have it removed. Basically I'm now curious of what a free tongue will feel like and since I'm already going under a general aneasthetic and the removal of a tongue tie is very simple I thought I'd go for it. Otherwise I would never have looked into it. Thanks for everyone who shared their stories! Hope mine helps too, good luck! He was not gaining weight through breast feeding, and this is probably the reason. We have been supplementing with formula for 2 weeks and he is now gaining weight. We went to an ENT and she said since he will feed from a bottle, cutting the frenulum is an elective procedure (and did not recommend it this early). I thought it would be a simple procedure and had hoped to have it done that visit, but according to this doctor, our son would need to be put under, which is way more involved and riskier. I had wanted to continue nursing, but am wondering if I can justify having this procedure done at 6 months when he could just have formula. I don't want him to have other problems later, of course. At what age is it less ricky to use anestia? Will he have problems with solids and speech if we put it off? Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: I think that more mobility of your tongue can be achieved by doing some tongue exercices (I found a few on the Internet), but my oral surgeon didn't say anything about them. The most exercices I did, are: sticking out your tongue to your chin, horizontally and to your nose, to the left and to the right trying to curl your tongue and touch the soft palate, poke your tongue inside your cheeks, open your mouth widely and try to touch the upper teeth with your tongue tip. My experiences are that my tongue gets more mobile, even several weeks after the procedure. Apparently the muscles seem not to deteriorate in the 38 years that I was tongue-tied... Name: Matthew Country: other Comment: Our son (27 months old) has just recovered from Frenectomy (release of tongue tie). Because of his age he required a general anaesthetic. Surgery was performed by an oral surgeon and he was in the operating theatre for 15 mins. He had one post-op complication as per standard procedure the surgeon administered a local anaesthetic to help with pain relief post-op. Unfortunately this was a little bit too effective and our son severely chewed his tongue post-op. This turned a 2 day recovery into a 10 day ordeal. Had I had the option I wouldve chosen no local anaesthetic and the resultant immediate post-op pain/distress. In my opinion the potential negative consequences of the local anaesthetic far out way the benefits. Having said that I would recommend surgery to any parent with a tongue tied infant/child. The benefits to speech and more significantly the social/psychological benefits of having a normal tongue function are too great to not-intervene with surgery. Name: Ava Country: usa Comment: From reading several comments, its clear that no two people have the exact same "tongue tie" experience. The majority have the same conclusion though- its just not pleasant! Im 20 now, and I couldn't pronounce my "S" until I was seven, after many "Sammy Snake" sessions with a speech therapist. Since then I havent had a single problem with pronunciation or articulation, so tongue tie doesnt mean everyone speaks unclearly or with difficulty. I worked in radio for 10 months before going to college, so I have to disagree with "Carlito's way" (comment below) that a tongue tied child that will never speak like a news/radio broadcaster. True for some but not for all! I agree that we'll never be able to roll our "r"s for spanish though (i gave up and did french!). When i was younger i bit the ice cream from the cones, since licking was out! Tongue tie never bothered me, and i showed EVERYBODY how little i could stick my tongue out-I found it funny! But Kissing was majorly effected, and even as an outgoing person, it really dampened my sexual confidence as a young teen. A tongue tied tongue is just not designed for kissing! Anyway I inevitably got the operation done 5 months ago under general anaesthetic. It was quick and painless, i went into hospital at 9am and was out by 12:30. I was convinced it would mess up my speech but it didnt at all, straight away i was speaking fine. However, i expected rediculous results like touching my nose with my tongue! and how wrong was I! I can feel my upper palate in my mouth which is nice...but can barely lick my lips. Doc said it would be "anatomically impossible" to cut more because of salivary glands, but anyway kissing is (slightly) better! OK this "comment" is getting way too long, i'll shutup now! But I'd like to advise people that tongue tie is also called ankyloglossia, and if you check google theres lots of unhelpful, but interesting information! It says how lots of problems like snoring, stiff joints, bad circulation, bad teeth, and lower vocal volume are associated with more severe tongue tie. I found this website pretty interesting anyway i'll leave it at that :) Name: Carlitos Way Country: usa Comment: Im 21 years old and I noticed my toungue tie at a very young age. My speech has never been severely flawed, but at the same time as a teen, growing up in New York City speaking super clear wasnt always a big deal. However Ive noticed all my life, that certain people have had a hard time understanding me, and I tend to have to repeat myself quite often. Or when I speak, sometimes people dont respond because they feel sorry that they cant understand me. Now Im in Costa Rica learning spanish, and my problem has increased two-fold with the pronunciation of the rs and Ls. Although I have a partial toungue-tie, Im deciding to get the operation done. Certain words such as "Amsterdam" or in spanish "refrigeradora" I just cant say correctly in normal conversation. Or to say them correctly I have to slow my speach down in a manner that for me just sounds sort of akward. The point is, I suggest all of you parents out there to get the toungue-tied operation performed on your child while he/she is young. It does have subtle psychological effects, and even though the child might speak "normal", he/she will never have the potential to speak like news or radio broadcasters. I consider myself a person who has overcome being Toungue-Tied but with some considerable mental taxing. Surprisingly Ive been at the Head of different organizations at the High School and University level. I get my message out, but I know that certain words just dont come out sounding the way I want them to. I was the kid in the class who would sweat a bit when asked to read out loud. Because of my ambition, Ive always thrown myself at the forefront of social organizations, but always with a certain nervousness when it came time for large social gatherings, or speeches. As Spanish becomes more important, realize that someone who is toungue tied might "wing it" in English, but will find speaking proper Spanish nearly impossible. The truth is, the difference between clear communication and muffled communication is subtle, but that subtlety in my opinion can make or break and important job interview, or even worse, ruin that date with that special other. Name: Julia Country: usa Comment: My son who is 14 months old had the surgery 1 week ago. he was fine after 2 days. he hasn't really stuck it out yet so i can't notice a big difference but i can see it is not in a heart shape anymore. i had the surgery done on myself last year. i didn't realize how common this was until i noticed my son and started doing some research on it. i wanted to have it done first to be the so-called guinea-pig for him. i think i was in more pain than him. he seemed fine after the first 2 days and is eating everything he wants. he went for a follow-up appt. and the doc showed me the before and after pictures and there definitely is an improvement but it's hard to get a 14 month old to stick out his tongue when you want him to! my son ate fine but i didn't want him to go through life the way i did and to grow up always being so self-conscious about everything and getting teased by his peers. i especially don't want to have any speech problems and figured if i got it done now before he really starts to talk it would be helpful rather than having to go through speech therapy. i would recommend getting this done no matter how old you are. i am glad that i had the procedure done on myself and my son. p.s. now we will be able to stick our tongues out at each other. lol. Name: Elisa Country: usa Comment: I was 3 years old when my grandmother noticed that I was tongue tied. My mother had it clipped, but I still had severe speech problems up until grade 4. I can still only stick my tongue out so far, but at least I can speak clearly. Name: Alistair Wiseman Country: england Comment: Luke : Sounds like you've been really messed about. I must admit i have considered having my tie cut but having never had an operation, (or an injection in 16 years im 30 now)and having lived with it for so long i am kinda used to it now. i've been told by lasses that they actually prefer not having a lad trying to stick his tongue down their throat. hehe. So it does have its benefits an a way. My tongue is tied DIRECTLY under front 2 teeth so to get any part of my tongue out it has to fold over itself to protrude at all. Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: (To Luke) That is awfully bad... Apparently there was no laser surgery. About 1.5 months ago my tongue-tie was clipped by using a laser, in order to prevent bleeding and burningly close the blood vessels. It is stitched in order to prevent the tongue healing in the wrong way. Also my tongue was pretty painful in the first few days, especially when I was eating. I am still very pleased by the surgery. It is said that the improvement of tongue protrusion (sticking it out) is not dramatically, but in my case it is. I can stick out my tongue about 3 cm (slightly more than an inch) farther than I could before the surgery. There is no pain when doing so, while there was before the surgery. Name: Luke Country: canada Comment: I am 23yrs. old, was born with a tongue tie and hadn't had it reversed until very recently. As an infant I had a lot of difficulty feeding. There are pictures of me looking very skinny as a baby. My moron GP never diagnosed it. At 22 I had it reversed in Ottawa by another moron doctor. During the local anesthetic operation there were problems with excess bleeding-literally sqirting out like I've only otherwise seen on movies. Initially it seemed there was an improvement with the operation. But it seemed part of my tongue wasn't healing properly and became painfull. I ended up waking up in a smallish pool of blood around my head and my mounth full of clotting blood. I had the tongue re-stiched in the hospital. I think my problem was likely the result of an initial operation that didn't go that well and subsquent infection. I did not get antiboitics after the initial operation but asked for them from the emergency doctor and had no problems afterwords. My tongue is currently back where I started. I can stick my tongue about two centimetres out from my bottom lip. This is farther than a lot of tongue tied people so I guess I should be happy. I initially wanted it reversed mainly because I was trying to learn Spanish and couldn't roll my R's for the life of me. But I admit I am not that confident in my kissing and oral sex abilities-Alistar tell us your special tongue tied techniques. I also unfortunately also have first and last names that start with Ls. Saying my own name properly requires some effort for me. I know my surgery experience is somewhat of a horror story but on the bright side, for those reading this, I haven't heard anything close to as bad. Name: Alistair Wiseman Country: england Comment: Glad to see this issue is being discussed and action is coming from it. I posted earlier about how I'm 30 and tongue tied, and how it affects you in later life, both psychologically and physically. I forgot one other issue which plagued me thru school. I used to play the Euphonium, the trumpet, and various other brass instruments. My tongue being as it is meant that i was unable to progress thru to higher grades with this instrument, and would have affected me on almost any other wind / brass instrument i chose. This was unfortunate, as music and instrument playing were compulsory at the school i went too, so it obviously alienated me again! Name: Shell Country: england Comment: My 16month will be having her tongue tie snipped under general next week. A family member noticed something strange with her tongue when 3 weeks old, and after some research on the internet we self-diagnosed tongue tie (heart shape tongue when she tried to stick it out, wouldn't breastfeed, constant dribbling during bottle feeding requiring double bibbing!). Although we found a paed surgeon in the UK who was at the forefront of diagnosing tongue tie and performing the necessary procedure at such a young age, our local paed recommened to wait until she was over 1 year old as the tongue tie could snap by itself during that period. Shouldn't have listened to him ! Suffice to say, after 16months this has not happened, she cannot lick ice cream, and we are worried for any future problems including speech. So we have taken the decision to get it done by the paed surgeon who is championing tongue tie intervention in the UK and we are hopeful that all will go OK next week. It will be interesting to see if there are any changes in feeding and speech after the procedure - will keep you posted. In summary, get it done early when they are only a few months old and don't require a general, just a touch of calpol ! Name: stacie Country: england Comment: i found out that my son had tongue tie when he was 4 weeks old, he has never had any problems with eating but unfortunatly at the age of nearly 2 years can still only say a few words most of which i can not understand!! after reading this page i will definatly be taking him to see the doctor to ask about having it cut thankyou Name: Julia Country: usa Comment: My son is 13 months old and will be getting the procedure done next month. the surgeon told me that he has to put him to sleep and I am very nervous about that. i don't want to wait until he gets older and take the chance of him developing speech or social problems. my son seems to be having the same problems that Kimmy's son had. there is more food outside of his mouth than he is taking in! i noticed it right away since i was tied and actually had the procedure done in march. i wanted to be the guinee pig for my son. i always wished my parents had mine clipped and i don't want my son to resent me for not having it done for him. i never had any speech problems but it did bother me socially. i never ate an icecream cone in front of anyone before. i hope i am making the right decision and everything goes well. my son is healthy otherwise and I am scared of the anesthesia risks. Name: Kimmy Country: usa Comment: I first noticed my son was tongue tied when he was about 5 months old. He didn't have any problems nursing but when I started him on baby cereal and baby food I noticed he had a hard time getting the food off of the spoon. It seemed like his tongue was pushing it out instead of taking it in. I talked to his pediatrician about it at his 6 month appointment and he told me that most children will outgrow it when they're around 3 years old and he said it wasn't necessary to clip it... so I waited. Well, when he was 3 he hadn't outgrown it. My son's speech has always been pretty good and I've always been able to understand everything he says but there are some words he had a hard time enunciating. Our regular dentist first saw him when he was 4 years old and he recommended we clip his frenulum. I researched it a bit before finally deciding to do it. My son just turned 5 this month and we just had his frenulum clipped a week ago. It was painless for him... he got a shot to numb his mouth and they took care of the frenulum and everything and he ate ice cream and jello and cold applesause that night and the next day he was just fine. It's only been a week but I can tell a difference in his speech already. His enunciation is 100 times better already! I only wish I had insisted that the doctor clip his frenulum when he was 6 months old instead of waiting until he was 5. Even though he didn't have any complications and it was painless for him I still would've rather had it done when he was a baby. Name: Olive Country: usa Comment: My daughter had tongue tie surgery at age 6 in July. We have noticed a big improvement in her speech clarity. Previously I couldnt understand her 50% of the time. I got very tired of continually saying What? to her. Now I understand everything that she says. The procedure was very simple. She ate ice cream for a few hours afterwards and then was ready for everything and anything. She was up and around and playing with her friends. There was some sensitivity for a few days but there really was nothing to it. I wish that we had it done when it was first noticed by her dentist at three. The dentist said that if a speech pathologist determines that it is interfering with her speech then it should be done. The schools speech pathologist determined that it wasnt so we left it at that. However her speech was so difficult to understand, we finally said forget it- even after a second opinion from another school speech pathologist, we had it done anyway. It really is a simple procedure that should have been done sooner rather than later. I think it would have saved us a lot of trouble and agonizing. Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: It is for sure that you are, Worried Mommy. Now it is 1.5 weeks later. I was surprised that my speech still improved, although I am a 38 years old adult (normally I would expect that from little children, not from adults). I sometimes sound like a snake (at least in Dutch, my mother tongue) when I pronounce the s, and my l's are slightly longer than they are used to. After all I am very pleased by the procedure, I can stick my tongue out an inch (2.54 cm) farther than I used too. Also I can touch the soft palate with the tongue tip. Name: Worried Mommy Country: usa Comment: I just found out my son is tongue tied after expressing my concerns to a friend of my son being almost 2 1/2 and having very limited speech, she told me to check his tongue and his ears. Her boys were tongue tied, but they figured this out as soon as they were born so it was taken care of quickly. Well I was in denial but two days later I though well how would I talk if I was tongue tied? Well guess what, I sounded just like my 2 yr old sounds!!! So I checked his tongue and sure enough he's tongue tied. He babbles on and on ALLLLL day long ,b ut I can't understand a thing he says. I felt horrible when I found out that this is the reason why he isn't speaking clearly, I mean he practices his colors, letters, numbers all the time, but they all sound like "un". And after reading all the postings on here, I am definitely going to take him to a doctor and insist on a solution...I hadn't even began to think that this could possibly be causing him eating problems or future problems as you have expressed, in his sex life, kissing, stuff that we take for granted, so thank you. Thank you to all of you teenagers out there that reassured me that YES, I am doing the right thing for my baby. Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: It is really a weird sensation to move and to feel the tongue where it haver has been in the past 38 years until this morning (according to GMT + 2). I don't dare to stick the tongue out, because I am afraid that I am hurting myself and damaging the stitches that are still under my tongue. Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: Well, an hour ago the procedure is done. It was painless, including the injection for the anaesthesia (not sure about the spelling). It was pretty short. Because a green tissue is put over my head with a hole in it (where my mouth is) I couldn't see what is happening right now. At this moment I have no pain yet, but my speech is temporarily deteriorated. The t and d is kind of Swedish, the ee (as in bee) has a kind of noice (but I am experiencing that these problems are slowly disappearing). I have no pain yet, but the surgeon prescribed me: Ibuprofen (a general medication against pain that I might feel soon). Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: West, You could say that simple lazer surgery is not the way of solving the problem of tongue-tiedness. The 5th of August I would have my frenulotomy (-ectomy or -oplasty), but the surgeon only diagnosed my of having ankyloglossia (the medical term of being tongue-tied). He said: "Go to the secretary for making an appointment of cutting through the tie." This appointment will be the 14th of September (so after 5 days). There will be anaesthesy (how do you write it?; English is not my native tongue), an incision and stitching. A real question to you: Can I eat normally, can I work normally afterwards. I can't stick my tongue any farther out, but I do have a little more movement lifting it up, but not much. It cost me $120 after insurance and it's hard to say if it was worth it. If my frenulum stayed where it was originally cut to it would be different, but it has grown back almost entirely. My doctor said that was normal? There are different ways that this can be done. My doctor just cut my frenulum, didn't remove it. If I were to do it again I would have seen someone that actually removed it. From what I have heard people are happier with those results. This suggests that there is a lessening of the degree of severity of the anatomical abnormality with growth and development A person with tongue-tie is unable to lick an icecream or stick out his/her tongue. It may contribute to dental problems. The frenulum may cause a persistent gap between the lower front two teeth. Tongue-tie may cause problems with articulation of sounds such as t, d, 1, th and s because it restricts the ability to elevate the tongue. It may also be impossible to play a wind instrument which requires the tongue to stop the mouthpiece. In summary, surgery should be considered if any of the problems pose a grave concern to a neaonates nutritional needs or impact dental malformations. Speech Therapy may be considered to address compensatory strategies to minimize articulatory imprecisions. Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: Well, Flip-flap, I think that everybody must decide for him-/herself, whether he/she wants to get rid of the tongue-tie or not. :) Name: Hans Kamp Country: netherlands Comment: The doctor gave some resistance when I said that I want my tongue-tie cut. He says, it was something natural. "I am a doctor for 24 years, and I never ever had a case in which a patient wanted to have the tie cut away." I: "If I want to stick out my tongue, the tie hurts." He: "A tongue is not used for sticking it out. That is not its purpose." I said nothing but what he said was plain stupid, and I think, most of you agree with me. BTW, I demanded it to be cut, so I got a letter that I have to take to the oral surgeon. My tongue-tie will be cut on Thirsday 5th of August, at 14.20 (GMT + 2). I will let you know what happens after that and what I experience. Name: Arianna Country: other Comment: Im 18 and I got my tongue tie surgery done one week ago. I didnt have any speech problems, I got it done for sexual purposes really-kissing and stuff! i was put under a general anesthetic for 5 minutes or something and when i woke up I could speak normally, to my surprise! I had very very little pain and it didn't effect my speech at all. The doctor used a laser and i didnt have any stitches. After, it was great to feel the roof of my mouth for the first time! I'd advise anyone to get it done, and to not be scared! However, although better than before the op,I still don't have great mobility of my tongue, and can barely lift my tongue past my upper lip. Its quite disappointing but I hope it will improve with time. And its not like my surgeon could have snipped it further back- he said he snipped it as far back as anatomically possible! To MB in Canada, your surgeon said that if the surgery didnt make much difference, and people still couldnt really stick their tongues out, then they didnt really need the surgery.... Well my tongue tie probably couldnt have been worse! The frenum was attached at almost the tip of my tongue! So I don't really know what he's talking about! I'd advise parents to get their kid's tongue tie snipped when they're young, to avoid the definate embarrassment they will face when kissing etc. Also it seems kids have a better chance og gaining full mobility of the tongue. Its not painful and doesnt effect speech. All my worrying was a waste of time, and so is yours! Good luck! Name: MB Country: canada Comment: Julia - I'm having it done mid-August :) I'm glad, too. The surgeon is the same guy who did the surgery to take out my wisdom teeth, and I completely trust him. I asked him some questions, and he says he's never encountered any problems with people having this done. No speech problems afterwards, etc... and when I asked him about me hearing that some people (like from this board) have said that having the procedure done didn't help - ie. they still couldn't stick their tongues out far - he said that, most likely, these people didn't have to have the procedure done in the first place - that they're cases aren't really that bad, and that's the reason why they feel that it didn't make a difference... this also prompted me to ask if my tongue-tie is pretty bad, and apparently it is, even without having speech problems or anything at all. So, yeah, I'm glad I'm getting it done. He tells me I should definitely see the difference and be able to stick my tongue out and all that :) Name: Julia Country: usa Comment: this is to MB from Canada: i am 34 and finally had my tongue-tied situation fixed. it is really not that bad of a procedure. in about 2 months i was totally back to normal. now i can stick my tongue out! i never realized how common this was until my son was born with it. he is now 10 months old and the doc said to leave it alone but i am going to take him to a specialist to find out more. i would rather have it done now than for him to wait until he is older like i was. it is definitely embarrassing as a kid and in adult situations. i am so glad i had it done and i don't want my son to have to go through this. my advice to you is to get it done. good luck to you. Name: MB Country: canada Comment: People's opinions are going to vary on this subject no matter what... some parents/doctors don't think the frenulum should be cut, if the child doesn't have problems. But you need to remember - you're not that child, and it's not you that has to grow up with it. I'm 18, and my parents were told when I was born that I was tongue-tied, but to leave it for now. The doctor said it only had to be looked after if I had problems because of it (like speech, etc..) For the most part, I'm perfectly normal, when it comes to my being tongue-tied. I don't have a serious case, I can stick my tongue out, but only just a little bit past my lips, although even then, it looks really awkward when I do. I never really had speech problems. I was very much into reading as a child, and I can read/speak out loud perfectly fine, although I do find that I stumble once in a while (whether this is due to being tongue-tied, or not, I really can't say). Even though it's easy to withstand, I do have slight pain along the frenulum when I try lifting my tongue up/sticking it out, though. I wished every day I was growing up that my parents had just gotten it clipped when I was baby. It's annoying to have a tight frenulum - not only that, it's not natural. You're not meant to have your tongue tied down - it's bad for your teeth, it can cause pain, or speech problems. Add to that that it's embarrassing as a child to be so excluded from the rest of your friends.. you wouldn't think it's that big of a deal, but when you can't stick your tongue out, people *will* notice when you try. People may not be mean about it, but I personally found that it was extremely annoying to explain the situation over and over to people who just couldn't comprehend what I had. My family didn't help - they've always teased me about knowing that I won't be able to kiss properly. I've always thought in those moments that, if they knew that much, they should have been compassionate enough to have had it clipped when I was a baby. I grew up fearing my first kiss, something a girl is meant to look forward to. Instead, I was terrified because I was sure I was going to make a fool of myself. Granted, it wasn't horrible, but the entire situation was extremely awkward for me, and I'd imagine that it's just as bad, or worse, for someone whose situation is worse than mine. My advice to parents would be to have your child's frenulum cut, if you can. You may think it's unecessary since, as a child, they may not be having problems, but please think of their lives as an adult. They may possibly go through years and years of psychological problems, when you could have easily fixed that a few weeks after they were born. Myself, I have an appointment with my oral surgeon tomorrow to find out the facts regarding the surgery to have my frenulum cut. I need to hear with my own ears what the consequences are, and then I'll make the decision as to whether I'll have it clipped or not. Being tongue-tied is something I can live with, it's just something that I would rather not have to, if it's possible. I'm going to keep practising, a sort of physiotherapy to learn how to stick it out. I've no idea if it will work though. Has anyone else been able to work through this problem? Name: zoe Country: australia Comment: In response to zzie3@hotmail.com. Up until last week I was tongue-tied when I had the operation to correct it. I've read on the internet that some children can develop speech problems because of the tie. But neither myself nor my younger brother who is also tied has not had any problems with speech. I've also read about people who were bullied because of it, but I've never had any problems with this, apart from one time when a boy made fun of the way i was licking my ice cream. However, the longer you leave the operation the less likely you will be able to have improved function of the tongue. so once a baby is passed a few months old it cannot learn new muscle movement. I've had the operation now, but i'm dissapointed with the results, I still cannot stick my tongue out. I'm still waiting for the tongue to heal properly but it still looks as though i won't be able to do oral. Ask yourself a question, if your son's problem didn't involve his tongue but was another condition which would mean a poor sex life when he got older, perhaps a problem with his penis, would have the problem corrected? I expect you would. So why not help him have a fulfilling sex life by correcting his tongue? surely his psychological well being and happiness as an adult taking part in adult activites outweighs pain which will last only a few days. If your worried about the dangers of anasthetic talk to an expert on the matter. I wish my parents had correct my tongue when i was a child. Name: mom2-3 Country: usa Comment: My 3rd daughter is what they call "tounge tied". They told me she would NEVER be able to speak properly and that I should have it cut immediately (first week of life). Well guess what, she started speaking in sentences at 18 months and has no issues what so ever with speech. I have done some research and apparently only 10% need to have their tounge cut to help speech. At 18 months your child should have about 75 words, but it is not generally expected that they be understood by strangers until about age 3. My oldest daughter has autism. She is 6 and is completly non-verbal, so I was very concerned that this daughter would have a problem too. But it doesn't necessarily mean there will be a speech problem. There were two other ped's that I talked to that also felt no concern over it. But I kept looking for answers to my questions. I finally found a lactation consultant who had a very informative video that actually showed the proceedure being done. We decided that his tongue was severe enough that it would probably be an issue in his later life and had the proceedure done. The difference between a "snip" and "surgery" has to do with the veins and muscles in the tongue. Infants are less developed and usually require the snip. We were refered to another ped who did a very conservative snip right in her office, after inspecting his tongue. The very small snip didn't seem to do anything for the first few days and then his tongue seemed to loosen and stretch out more. It is still pinned somewhat but now I am not so afraid of the proceedure so we are going to let it be for a while and just monitor it. One tiny snip may be all he neede. I am sorry for for anyone struggling with this issue. There should be better information out there for us. Good luck to all... How did her doctors, therapists, teacher and myself not notice?? Well my daughter is legally blind, so when she never stuck out her tongue, that wasn't a total shock. We just figured that she couldn't see our tounge and mimic use and stick out her tongue. Monday I will be calling her pediatrician. Personally I would hate to put her through surgery, but I that that is way worth a lifetime of discomfort. Why do I say discomfort? Because when I ask her to stick her tongue out she says "No,it's too hard to do that. It hurts!" SO, I can't have my poor daughter go through that all her life...Interfere with her eating, speech (she talks kind of nasally) and maybe in the future the appearance of it, pain of it. Name: kelly Country: england Comment: im a midwife in the uk, and noticed my baby was tongue tied shortly after birth, but all i knew was it can effect feeding and that the paeds didn't like to do surgey. i was breast feeding my baby and we were having alot of problems. He was gaining good weight put my nipples were in a right mess, despite letting alot of other midwives try and help. At my hospital that i work at some of the paeds will cut tongue ties. Therefore i asked our lactation consultant midwife if she would make me a referal. She agreed, but I had to wait until he was 9 weeks for an appointment. It was a real struggle to keep on feeding him, but I was really determined. I had mastisis, and serial craked nipples, which is a indicator that the fix is not good. I could only hold him in one position, which was under my arm whilst feeding. This made my feeding look different to everyone else, so in public everyone knew I was feeding. I went to the appointment and was expecting to have to put an arguement foward about feeding, later speech and dental hygiene issues, but I was presentally suprised to find they only to happy to do it. They said is wasn't that babd, but still significant enough. I was really nervous about the procedure, and felt really guilty about inflicting pain on my baby, just because my nipples were sore, but as my friends pointed out to me, if i didn't get his tongue clipped, I would give up breastfeeding, and as a result would have a bigger impact on his long term health, in the increased rick of diabetsis, gastroenteritsis, and ear infections. Also he loved breastfeeding, and although it was painful for me so did I. Well I needn't have worried, it was the quick and easy. the Dr lied him on her nap traping his head inbetween her knee, and quickly lifted is tongue and made a small sip with the sissors. No analgesia was used, and my baby was more upset with the fact that someone put their fingers in his mouth. He hardly cryed at all. I didn't even realise it was all done until i saw a little blood when they gave him back to me. It bleed a small amount for about 5 mins. similar to when you bit your tongue when eating. The difference in feeding and his appearence was amazing. Now at 5 months old he is a gorgous plump baby still exclusively breastfeeding, and loves his new tongue that spends more time out of his mouth, than in. His new trick is blowing rasberries, which he finds highly amusing. If I hadn't of had in tongue clipped this woule be a pleasure he may never enjoyed. So on my case I would recommend having it done as early as possible. I wish I could of had it done in those early weeks,as I would have enjoyed feeding him more. I have also decided after seeing how easy it is to do the procedure, that I am going to get training in how to do it, as some midwives in the uk are doing. I also read about a woman who had the procedure refused so she massaged her baby frenulum daily, and after a few week if tore on its own, and the baby was no longer tongue tied. Name: Doug Christensen Country: canada Comment: As i read all these articles i noticed that being tongue-tied isnt easy. I'm 19 years old and goin to SAIT in Calgary. I had my tongue cut two days after I was born. I had troubles pronouncing my 'r's in elementary and i still do. No big deal, I'll adjust. The symtoms of tonge tie came back in grade 1, i kept on catching the cord between my two bottom front teeth causing infection periodicaly. So I got the surgery two months later and it fixed the problem...for the meantime. Nowadays I notice when I public speak it affects me making me stutter a bit. I don't blame anyone cause that doesnt solve anything, I just adjust since i can't have surgery anymore. The cord has pulled my salivary glands out from under its 'bed' and if i have surgery the risk of it getting cut and making them not excrete saliva is very high. Every situation is different so you can only read peoples examples at how theirs was ahandled and make sure to make the correct choices. I had noticed that his tongue has a little dent in the tip, but I didn't know what it was. No one in my family is tongue tied and I don't know the first thing about it. She said nothing needed to be done about it until we notice if there is a problem with his speech or something like that. However, from reading the postings here I'm starting to realize it's impacting him now and I didn't even know. I've been having a real probelm feeding him chunky baby foods, he used to gag on them when he was 8 months. Now he just spits them out. The nurse said it was just sensitive gums but now I wonder. It only took about 5 min, he was pretty groggy from the anitstesia etc... and also in some pain but the Dr. told me it shouldnt last long and to let him eat whatever he wanted. I noticed a change as soon as I saw him after the surgery, on the was home he stuck out hit tongue a few times, I was so excited thats the first time he had done that, and his tongue tie wasnt that severe. I suggest to anyone to go ahead and have it done, its not going to harm him in any way and if the child still has a speech problem at least you will know it wasnt from the tongue tie if you have it clipped. Name: stephie Country: canada Comment: Hi I am writing to say I have just read all these articles and postings, and I too have a 7 year old son who is tongue tied. At birth I was told by his pediatrician and i scheduled an appointment with a plastic surgeon. When I went for the consultation the whole procedure was explained, (the baby was 2 months old) I felt i could not inflict all this pain on such a young child. I was breastfeeding and I had no problems in fact i continued for 13 months. I resheduled an appointment at a later date but my baby had fever that day so i took it as a sign from God that this surgery should not be followed through. My son grew up and seemed to have a speech delay, I compared him to my first son's acquistions and speech productions and found him lacking in comparison. So at 4 i took him to a speech therapist and she said it would not be necessary to clip his tongue tie,and that we could do lengthening exercises like sucking on crazy straws etc. I am a teacher so I have linguistic background so I decided to do the speech exercises with him, well let me tell you when you have other children it is hard and frustrating for you and child to do this on long term basis,Another problem was deciding what caused the language delay, since he was growing up in a bilingual household,I spoke my mother tongue to him but the tv and his eldest brother talked to him in english and there was a lot of english spoken so he ma have been cponfused, Many of the postings I have read here talk of improved language speech after surgery, I am not so sure of that, alot of children have developmental delays but nevetheless i am encouraged that perhaps his speech will be clearer if he gets the surgery. I now have booked an appointment for sep of this year two months away, hopefully it will go well. The reason i finally decided is because he complains he doesn't like his 'w' form that his tongue makes when he protrudes it and that it hurts. I can't imagine the discomfort it has caused him and it may expain why perhaps in fast speech I have a hard time understanding him. It is so difficult to clearly pin point the language delay, since ususally it could be a combination of factors, and in my case my third son also has speech delay but no tongue tie, so go figure. My point is as a parent it is so difficult to make choices, sometimes I think it would be better if we were less informed and we did it the old way: Kid had a tie? get it clipped right away, end of story, no pondering no problems.I urge any one who has speech delays to consult consult and consult and never to stick to one opinion, because there are definitely only two schools of thought, those who think you could fix it, and those who think that the less intervention the better. I think what encourages me the most is the 16 year olds who talk of ridicule at school age and the inability to kiss someone properly, it puts things in a a different perspective. My daughters was very tight and she was not able to breast feed at all, hers was snipped at 15 months and once done she was able to say more words instantly. My son though not as tight a tie was affected more severly. At 12 months he was still only able to eat strained baby food, he would vomit up anything lumpy. I persisted with the docs to do the operation, they did not think his problem was tongue-tie related. 10 minutes after his operation at 13 months old he eat a baby biscuit and was able to keep it down! I was right, a complete success. My son is also speech delayed now and we often wonder did this contribute to his lack of normal speech development from 6-12 months old. I wrote a small article here early on, when my son first had his surgery done. I thank God every day that I made that choice. My son Hayden is now 5 years old, and he is doing WONDERFUL. He had two years of early intervention speech therapy. He will be going to kindergarten this year, and we had him screened to see if the speech therapist may need to work with him anymore (he still says cockin candy for cotton candy) but she says a lot of kids his age still have some speech problems, but they will eventually go away, and he does not need therapy anymore for the few words he has trouble with. He is now a "typical" child, and without the surgery he may still be babbling and getting frustrated with us because he knew what he wanted to tell us, he is a very intelligent little boy, but with that babbling he did, we didn't understand him. Now he says I love you mommy and daddy everyday, and we feel so blessed! We do not want him to become comfortable with improper pronunciation and so we were referred to an ENT and a Speach Pathologist. Both indicated the need for the Frenulum to be clipped, a very simple procedure that in itself only takes 15 Minutes and really only a day of recovery, otherwise it's back to normal. However, the Speach Pathologist indicate to my wife and I that our son would benefit not only from the surgery but a period of Speach Therapy as well. If anyone is at a point where they have noticed a speach delay or impediment where they will be opting for this procedure, I strongly suggest speach therapy for the child, at least until they get their chance at regaining their level of articulation that they should have at their current age. You owe it to your child. Remember though no problems with the teeth, no problems with feeding/eating, no speach problems - LEAVE THEM ALONE. This was found out when I was 5, when I went to the Dentist and he diagnosed me with a tounge tie. To the caring parents out there, If your baby is feeding well and doesnt show any signs of trouble let the tounge be. If the tie becomes an issue with speach or eating later in life then please consider the surgery... But other than that I wouldnt dream of snipping the tie unless it was medicly nessisary. My symtoms..... My tounge does not reach the roof of my mouth unless my mouth is closed.... but I speak perfectly normal. (I use my teeth to pronounce words you would normaly use the roof of the mouth with) I can not reach all of my teeth with my tounge. This isnt a problem if you incourage your child to brush teeth often. I can only stick out my tounge. This has caused some disturbance when wanting to stick out my tounge at people, but hey....... nothing requiring a snip. Pros for you parents in keeping it..... They cant get a tounge ring!! (HEHEHE I tried when I was younger) I have no problems and the tie doesnt effect my life in any way. Please parents, dont put the child in uncomfort if its not nessisary!!!! I too was told my son was tounge tied when he was 10 days old and yes we took the wait and see approach, and now we can see it is effecting his speech,he is now 20 months old, so we are going with it and getting it done. I too was told that a general surgeon needs to do it, but it was the docotor who did the circumcision that found the tie at 10 days old and he himself does the simple proceedure of cutting it, and has been doing it for 20 years. There is no pain and your child doesn't need to be put under general anistitic. So don't put it off. Get it done, and see the difference in your child. When my daughter was age 4 we noticed that she couldn't stick out her tongue, but she had never had a problem with her speech or eating. So immediately we took her to an oral surgeon that said she definitely needed it clipped and so we got a second opinion and had the procedure done when she was 5. It was a success, but she did have to learn how to use her tongue again, because she had been tongue-tied for so long. My 2 year old also has this and I've noticed that his speech is not real clear, but I haven't had his clipped yet, because the doctor told me that he will have to go into the hospital to have the surgery and be put out, and that kind of scares me. I am going to have this done sometime this year before he turns 3, because I feel that in the long run its the best thing to do for him. My e-mail is tkf2kids@netscape.net, if anyone has any questions, comments, or advice. Thanks Tanya Name: Alice Country: usa Comment: My 12 month daughter has had difficulty with feeding. Finally it was put down to a tongue tie but all the health people had different opinions on whether or not it should be cut. In the end I found the book on Tongue Tie to be most helpful and decided to have it done. A huge improvement has followed. I would advise anyone not to delay and to have it done if thjere is any chance that it would help. Name: for consideration Country: usa Comment: I am 19 years old and was just told today that I am tongue-tied while I was at the dentist for a regular cleaning. I think my case is not very severe because my dentist was surprised at how far I could stick out my tongue (although, it is far less than most people can). I haven't had problems with eating or speech development, and I don't think it has drastically effected my teeth. However, for the past couple of years I have been asking people how far they could stick out their tongues because I began to feel self-conscious about it once I had a boyfriend. Being tongue-tied greatly affects french kissing. I wouldn't use this problem alone as a reason for having the surgery, but I would encourage parents to take this into consideration. Name: Mommy of 2 Country: usa Comment: My son turned 23 months today and yesterday had his tongue clipped(under general anesthesia by an ENT specialist). The surgery took a total of about 15 minutes. He has recovered very well, so far, with no pain. If I could go back I would have done it sooner (like at birth or shortly after). So what I would recommend to other mothers out there with kids with tongue tie, is to clip it as soon as you notice the condition. I feel that the younger the easier it is for them to recover. And if you do it soon after birth I have heard that they don't even need general anesthesia to clip it. Name: Andrea Country: canada Comment: I have a 6 month old son who was born tongue-tied. Since this was noticed, I have heard many different problems this could cause. For example, eating, speaking and dental problems. I have brought this to my family physician's attention. She said that they will not clip the piece of skin, unless a problem develops. My son has not had trouble eating, but I would think that getting this fixed sooner would be better. I guess my biggest concern now is speaking and dental complications. Such as eating slolids when he is older and dental concerns. Along with any other problems it may cause. On the other hand a part of me wants to wait and see if it gets better when he gets older. And I was also told that if cut wrong it could make speech worse. Please e-mail with info. Thanks sweetshorty_9@hotmail.com Name: Kellidra Country: usa Comment: My almost five year old daughter, Katie, has tongue tie. It has never caused any problems for her as far as eating is concerned. In fact, the pediatrician said that she had never seen a tongue-tied baby with such a strong suck. Katie also has tongue thrust, which speech therapists say is impeding her speech. While her "expressive speech" is at the level of a 6 yr. 11 month old, her articulation is only at the level of a 2 yr 11 month old. I have heard differening opinions about whether tongue tie can cause tongue thrust. Should we have her frenum clipped? Her pediatrician (a wonderful lady whom we have always trusted) doesn't seem to think so. One speech therapist thought she might ought to, while the other doesn't think it's causing the problems. Any opinions? Has anyone here had the frenum of a child this age clipped before? If so, what were your experiences? Name: mia baker Country: england Comment: I am 6 weeks old, today i went to see a specialist were he cut my tongue-tie, before he performed the simple procedure he explained to my mummy and daddy that there was no requirement for me to have it done but it MIGHT prevent me getting speech impediments and many things other people have talked about in this article. I know that this procedure does'nt hurt even without general anesthetic as i did'nt cry, and i think the decision my mummy and daddy made to get this done was a good one for my best interests. Name: Jewel Country: usa Comment: My child was tounge tied we were also told it was mild it did not effect his teeth. They said as long as he could lick peanut butter off his lips to show he could put his tounge to the top of his lip I would know if he had problems. Well what ever my son could not breastfeed or use a pacifier or when it came time to eat table food he choked often. He could say very few words and became very good at gestering for what he wanted. The doctors all had a good explination for each one of his problems.when he was 21/2 I finaly told a new nurse practioner that he was not doing things he should be she refered me to a Program called sooner start that help children at young ages with problems.I told them about his fremulum and she said doctors use to clipp right away but now they have found that bye clipping can cause loss of muscle control making speech worse. well he was three and could only say three or four words only one at a time.so I decided to have his doctor clipp and I wish to god that it would have been sooner, but there was no sure way for me to know to do so.After we did this sounds crazy but I was happy the first time I seen my son stick his tounge out at someone. He began to talk with the help of speech therapy. He did start a school program at the age three. His school was wonderful this program has brought him a long way. he is 8yrs old now .We think his delays not only caused speech problems but they also caused his learning delays in school. But I am also happy to say this week he is going to be taken out of special ed and put in his class for the full day he is proud of himself to and he continues to work with the speech therapist today. IF you want to know YES HE HAD TO LEARN TO USE HIS TOUNGE AGAIN I cant tell you how many times he bit it. HE had to learn simple things such as tounge clicking and learn to move a froot loop from one side to another he still hates meet today but can you blame him he never learn to like the stuff he chocked on often. Good luck to all of you I do not think you will ever get all the answers because like some say they do well and some dont BUT I CAN SAY, "IT WAS GREAT FOR HIM". I took my son to another doctor who did the procedure in the office in a matter of seconds. My son was 11 days old and the only discomfort he felt was from being held stil. Wer noticed it at birth, however, since it was not impeding his feeding, and he was vocalizing all sounds, we opted to take the "wait and see" approach. Now at 2 yrs of age, he is speaking full sentences, but has trouble with th s, th, ch, sh sounds. I am strongly consideringn the surgery at this point because I am afraid the longer I wait, the more difficult the adjustment will be. I was hoping you can give more information on the laser surgery. Is there anyone in the NY area you would recommend? What is the recovery like? Is it learning to speak once again? I am afraid he will end up with a "floppy" tongue post surgery, is this a possibility?. Has there been situations where, the surgery left a person with worse speech than before the surgery? I felt the article and all of the reviews very helpful, and I would appreciate any additional info you can send me. Thanks! I was told that if she did not have a problem breastfeeding, then there was no need to clip it. Her pediatrician and her dentist continued to monitor it because they said that sometimes the frenulum might stretch as the child gets older. Well, my daughter's frenulum never stretched, but she never had a speech problem. So, I decied to do nothing, but continue to monitor it. However, when my daughter was 5, her dentist recommended clipping it because it would cause her teeth to start growing inward because she would not be able push her tongue out far enough to push (thrust) her permanent teeth once they started to grow in. To make a long story short, when my daughter was 7 years old, I decided to have her frenulum clipped - not beacuse of her speech, but because of dental issues and the fact that she would sometimes hurt (or poke) her frenulum while eating certain foods. Regarding dental issues, her teeth were getting gaps on top and bottom baby teeth and her first two bottom teeth had to be pulled because they were not coming out on their own and her permanent teeth started growing in a row behing her baby teeth. I also got a second opinion from and ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) and he rocommened that I do the procedure so that she could have more flexibilty with her tongue. The procedure went well and she recovered well. Her dentist did the procedure and it was complete within a half hou
