The Egg Retrieval in the IVF Procedure

The Egg Retrieval in the IVF Procedure

IVF procedure is a comprehensive procedure. The success rate of IVF procedure depends on each step in the process and more specifically on egg retrieval procedure. How eggs are retrieved from the ovary of a woman? When can the eggs be retrieved? Get answers to all your queries related to egg retrieval process answered; read on.

When a couple decides to undergo an IVF procedure, they naturally feel excited about the prospect of becoming a parent after a patient wait and perhaps struggle. They also have very high hopes about the possible results too. Here it is important that they get a complete overview of one of the most vital part of the IVF procedure, that is, the egg retrieval part. The embryos that is required for implantation ought to be fit and healthy. For this, quite a few ripe and mature eggs are required to be retrieved from the ovaries of the woman. This is basically a prerequisite factor as regards the success of the IVF procedure.

Egg Retrieval in a Nutshell

This is a comprehensive process where the eggs from the ovary of the woman are removed medically. The eggs are then brought in contact with the sperm of the male in the laboratory; the process is termed as fertilisation. In order to bring about successful egg retrieval, the process of the follicle production in the woman requires stimulation. This is again brought about with the aid of particular hormones.

The follicles are actually the potential eggs and after the desired or the required number is produced, the eggs are removed from the ovaries for the fertilisation process. This is done in the fertility specialist clinic. After a successful fertilisation, these eggs are then transferred back into the uterus of the woman. It is indeed a complex process that might require multiple attempts as success may not be guaranteed at the very first attempt.

Some Facts about the Egg Follicles

The egg follicles are sacs filled with fluids that are to be found within the two ovaries of the woman. When a girl child is born, she has millions of egg follicles within her and each of them has an immature egg at their center. As the girl grows each month, multiple follicles also begin to develop simultaneously within her. This is brought about by the action of certain hormones. Amongst them, the follicle that happens to be the healthiest attracts the follicle stimulating hormone or FSH. The pituitary gland secretes this hormone and it brings about the breakage of the follicle and the egg is released. The follicles die off after a while. This entire process is termed as ovulation.

How The Follicular Development Is Stimulated?

In order to enhance the success rate of the IVF procedure, more than a single mature egg is required to be retrieved. The reproductive endocrinologist comes to the fore at this juncture and removes all the available healthy follicles from the ovaries of the woman. These multiple eggs are then sent for fertilisation. This process entails that the woman must have her follicles stimulated in an artificial fashion.

Certain medications are used to aid this stimulation process. The medications can either be oral or administered through subcutaneous injections for a period of approximately ten days. The development of the follicles occurs through the administration of:

  • Clomid
  • hMG
  • FSH

One needs to be very careful about the timing in this IVF process. If the follicles happen to get overdeveloped, the egg inside it also becomes over-matured and may not result in effective fertilisation. The follicles are removed by the process of follicular aspiration through the insertion of a hollow needle through the vagina. The entire process takes place through transvaginal ultrasound. This retrieved egg is now ready for fertilisation and embryo transfer.
