Helping Child to Prevent Exam Stress

Exam stress in children can be prevented if parents encourage children to complete their studies on time. If kids enjoy studies, the exam stress can be definitely prevented or reduced. Read on to know how parents can help children to prevent exam stress.

As a parent it is only you that the kid can look up to when they are bogged down with exam stress. It is just a bit of understanding and matured behaviour that can lead you to help your kid overcome the stress with ease. There can be a wide array of factors that lead to exam stress for the kid. It can be fear for no apparent reason like; they can feel stressed just because their pals are worried despite the fact that they are well prepared. So here are few tips on how you can help your child prevent exam stress:

Help the Child Prepare Himself

Explain the child that the best way to prepare for the exams is by building and following a timetable. Teach him the importance of discipline. Long before the exams are due you need to have all the facts regarding your kid’s progress with his lessons in his regular classes. Keep a regular track of his weekly or monthly tests and discuss his progress with his class and tuition teachers. This activity will give you a clear picture about his academic status.

Accordingly help him create a routine before the exams. The routine should have equal focus on all the subjects and ensure that the ones that he is comparatively poor at get special practice. This way the stress will dramatically reduced as the kid will get ample time to adequately prepare himself.

Allow Them to be Themselves

The “me time” is very important for every individual and even your little one requires it. It is a part of regular life and during exams when the stress levels are supposed to be running high, it is natural that the kid might feel like having a free time for himself at some point of the day. Allow him to have it and enjoy it.

Do not be too inquisitive about all his small movements. If he retires and sits for some time at some corner of the house like the stairs or the Verandah or the terrace, let him have that quiet time. It is advisable not to disturb or interrupt his thoughts. He might be just sorting out his problems in the lessons or mentally recapitulating or just taking a break from serious studies.

Avoid Conflicts

Every household has conflicts especially when you are dealing with children. Exams are a time where you need to be a little accommodative. Be firm in maintaining the regular schedule and discipline but at the same time be understanding to the child’s varying needs. Do not allow the build up of argument over little or inconsequential things.

Try your best to keep the environment of the house as fuss free as possible. This requires contribution from all the members of the family. Always ensure that the child does not feel frustrated or de-motivated; there can be times when the kid is prone to naturally feel so. Then it is the duty of the parent to ensure that the mood relapses to the normal one as soon as possible. The stress would reduce automatically.

Change Your Attitude

There are parents who try to live through the achievements of their kid. This should be avoided at all costs. Respect the individuality of the child and allow him to live his childhood with ease. Teach the child healthy competition but do not get so obsessed with his performance through consistently comparing it with other peers at school, this will only add to the stress and the child will lose self-confidence that can spell doom in his future life.

Give your child the complete freedom to study the way he wants. But at the end of the day, make sure that he studies all that is required. While making your child’s daily schedule, do not forget to involve him. Making studies a fun activity will definitely help parents to reduce exam stress.
