Chivalry

Chivalry seems to be on its last legs. As if it wasn't already next to impossible to come across a chivalrous man, once they get married and become husbands and fathers, they lose whatever precious little bit of chivalry they ever possessed. And the age-old excuse: women want to be treated equally, and that's what we're doing. What men fail to realise is that women want equal rights and equal opportunities but they are not the same as men. Chivalry doesn't mean just picking up the tab, which men may have an objection to especially if the woman is earning just as much as they do chivalry refers to other small courtesies and acts of thoughtfulness which don't cost anything, but are what make the difference between a man and a gentleman.

• Always let the lady enter a room before you. Open the door for her and stand aside. However, if the lady opens the door herself, she should hold it till the man enters, and not let it swing back on his face.
• Guide her slightly by placing your hand on the small of her back.
• At a restaurant, hold the chair steady for the lady when she is sitting down.
• Always let a lady enter and exit an elevator before you. Hold the door of the elevator open with your hand.
• Hold the door of your car open for her, and close it once she is seated.
• If a lady is feeling cold and you are wearing your jacket, offer it to her.
• If you are at a small gathering, rise when a woman enters or leaves the room.
• If you are at a large party and a woman approaches and starts speaking to you, stand up.
• Always give up your seat to a lady.
