Encourage your kids to speak their heart and mind out without judging them. Here are a few questions to ask your kids to get to know their heart.
Are your kids giving you a difficult time? Here are few tips to encourage kids to speak their heart out and tell you what you need to know.
Sometimes kids do not share what is going on in their heart and mind. For example, whenever Shilpa used to come home after school in the afternoon, she used to immediately lock herself in the room. She refused to speak to anybody at home and even did not eat lunch. This was noticed by her mother who wondered what the problem was. Shilpa would have even taken a drastic step had her mother and father not intervened and asked her what the problem was.
Here are a few steps to encourage your kids to speak their heart out and tell you what is going on:
Try Asking Your Kids the Following Questions
Here are some questions which you can ask your kids to speak their heart out.
“Is everything okay in school?”
This is a question you have to ask without fail. As much as possible, attend PTA meetings so you know what is happening. PTA meetings also known as Parent-Teacher meetings should be attended by every parent so you know what is going on.
Parents should not be so busy that they do not know what the child is doing in school or home. Only earning and going to office is not enough. You should have time to teach children and interact on a regular basis.
“Do you have good friends?”
Nowadays, life in the city has become so fast paced that nobody has time for anyone. Modern life is stressful for kids as well as parents. Sometimes, kids may not have anybody to talk to in school. He or she may be experiencing some problems in school also.
Similarly, there are hardly any children in some housing societies as well so such children have no chance to interact or play. In such situations, you can find a class nearby with some activities like tennis, badminton, etc so your child is able to socialize. Friendships can be formed even at a young age so ensure that your child is not missing out on anything.
“What’s the best thing which happened to you today?”
Sometimes your child may have something exciting to tell you. Perhaps, it was someone’s birthday and your child had a great time!
So, unless you ask – how will you know? Somebody may have done something very nice which made your child very happy. Sometimes, even in school – some people go out of the way to help such as giving an extra chocolate or sharing tiffin, pencils, etc. Let your son or daughter know that they can tell you everything.
“Which is your most favourite and least favourite subject?”
Ask your kids whether they are able to manage school-work and home-work. Let them tell you which subject they are weak in and which area of study is their strongest point. Thus, you can ask your child if he or she is facing any difficulty in Math, Science, etc.
You can also go through their report card and see which subject they need help in. Ask them if they are performing well in school and if they need extra coaching in any subjects. Encourage your kids to spell out their difficulties and ask questions to teacher in case they do not understand anything.
“What did you learn today?”
Ask your kids what they learnt that day? You can ask them which part of the day was easiest. Did anybody in class tell a joke? Who entertained them the most?
Tell them to take you through their day and what made them happiest. Ask them what they have learnt and whether it was through a teacher or friend. Sometimes, even apart from studies and academics, one learns a lot in school. Whether it is through a friend or another person, encourage your children to share.
Thus, one can learn a lot from kids provided you have the patience and time. Make time for your little one and tell them how important and special they are. Let them know that you are interested in the details about their life and they can feel free to talk to you about anything. Promise that you would not judge them even if they make a mistake so they can speak their heart and mind out without worrying that you will scold them.
