Stem cells are undifferentiated cells which can be differentiated into different other cells or specialized cell types. Stem cells can be obtained from two sources namely, adult tissues also called as adult stem cells and the embryos which are formed from the embryological development in blastocyst phase. They are also called as embryonic stem cell.

The two types of stem cells are characterized by their potential to discriminate into different types of cells such as muscle, skin and bones. The adult stem cells are present throughout the body after the development of embryo and can be found in different tissues. There are activated after injury or disease till then remain inactive.

The adult stem cells have an ability to produce a range of cells types from an organ and can also produce original organ. They can differentiate to become other cell types. The embryo stem cells can be derived from a human embryo which is four to five days old. These embryonic cells can be taken in the blastocyst phase.

The embryos which are created in extra in vitro fertilization clinics is the place where many eggs are fertilized in a test tube and only one of them is implanted. The remaining ones serve asthem stem cells. The blastocyst contains inner mass of cells called as embryoblast and outer cell mass called trophoblast.

The inner cell mass turns into different structure of organs and the outer cell mass is the part of placenta. Later the inner cell mass is the source of the embryo stem cells.

In normal pregnancy the stage of blastocyst continues till the implantation of the embryo in the uterus. The embryo till that point is called as foetus. This usually takes place by the 10th week of gestation.

Till the 10th week of gestation the major organs of the body are already created. When the embryo stem cells are extracted, the blastocyst stage indicates when to isolate the stem cells by positioning the inner mass cell into a nutrient rich fluid.

The necessary stimulation of differentiating is lacked by these stem cells. The replicate by dividing and they have the ability to turn into any cell type of the human body. These cells can be stimulated and some specializes cells can be created.
