    function of stem cells

The umbilical cord is discarded with the placenta and umbilical cord. this umbilical cord blood is a loaded with stem cells, which are genetically unique to your baby and family.Stem cells are undifferentiated, "blank" cells that do not yet have a specific function. Characteristically, stem cells have a high capacity for self-renewal and can regenerate and turn into the cells that form all types of tissues, organs and systems in the human body. They have the ability to replace or repair damaged cells throughout the body.

The stem cells are extracted from the umbilical cord and the cord tissue. This causes no harm to the baby and the mother. Compared to this the extraction of bone marrow is quite a painful and invasive procedure which requires anesthesia and is risky.

The stem cells should match the requirements for a transplant. It is difficult to match the stem cell with a perfect match for your baby. The siblings have a 50% chance of matching whereas you and the baby has 25% of matching chances.
