Breastfeeding moms generally have no dearth of advice from friends and relatives when it comes to their diet. As your lifestyle and food habits change, new moms often find themselves confused over an ideal nutritious diet.

    Counting Calories

You may feel like you are still carrying your pregnancy pounds, but this is not the time to go on a crash diet. In any case, breastfeeding moms often lose weight faster as the body’s metabolism rate kicks up during this period.

So how many calories should you be ingesting? On an average, a breastfeeding mother requires at least 500 calories more than a regular woman. However, the best gynecology and obstetrics experts caution that there is really no right answer to this. For some women this number is too high, while for some, it is too low. The optimum number of calories needed depends on the level of exercise, metabolism rate, how frequently you feed your child, etc.

    A Balanced Diet

What every breastfeeding mother really needs is a balanced diet, the best hospital for women and children. Your diet needs to incorporate all your food groups – carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fats.
    • Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
    • Try to stick to whole grains as much as possible.
    • Always add proteins to your diet, from either animal or plant sources. Eggs, fish, meat, and dairy products belong to the former, while legumes are good source of plant proteins.
    • Include iron, vitamins and calcium in your diet.
    • Your body will also need some amount of fat as it heals.

    What to Avoid

While you are free to indulge there are some food stuffs that can enter your diet and harm your baby, caution child nutrition specialists in Hyderabad. If you drink alcohol, wait its effects to pass completely before feeding your baby (this takes at least 4 hours). Certain medicines will also enter your bloodstream and milk, check with your doctor before taking any medicine. Use common sense and avoid unhealthy food. Some food is considered to cause tummy upset or colic in babies. These include milk products, certain spicy food, some legumes, cruciferous vegetables. Keep drinking water, especially when you are feeding your baby and stay away from aerated drinks as much as possible.

While the food you have will have a bearing on your child’s health, so will your mental state of mind. Eat healthy and stay happy!
