Sexually transmitted disease is also called as sexually transmitted infection which is viral or bacterial infection which can be received from an infected partner orally, genitally or through anal sex. These STI’s can have serious effect on the mother as well as the baby

Hello all, sex is not the only way these infections or diseases are transmitted. You can also get infected with the hepatitis B virus which can survive outside the body. These can be transmitted through contaminated needles or sharp instruments like knife, razors and many more. Pregnant women should avoid blood and open cuts of an infected person so that the mother as well as the baby are safe.

There are some infections which can be passed through the placenta and transmitted in the labour and delivery or even when the water breaks. There are newborn infections which can be very harmful and may cause development problems or health problems which affect for a lifetime. Some sexually transmitted diseases may cause miscarriage, urine infections, stillbirth or preterm birth.

Some of the most common infections include hepatitis B, genital herpes, HPV, HIV or AIDS, chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea or trichomoniasis. It is very important to detect the STI in pregnancy. The doctor will make a list of screen test for these diseases during the prenatal visit.

If you have symptoms of STI or have developed symptoms then you will be asked for screening in your third trimester again. It is recommended by CDC, The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention that the pregnant women should be screened for HIV, syphilis, HBV and chlamydia.

Hi the CDC suggests that even if you are not at risk of these infection of STI, sometimes these symptoms can lurk in your body without symptoms. It is also suggested for the pregnant mother to be screened for hepatitis C and gonorrhoea.

It is extremely important to tell your doctors about your symptoms if you or your partner have been exposed to STI in the pregnancy. Tests can be done again to confirm the illness and then the doctor can treat accordingly.

You can avoid the STI by completely avoiding sex during pregnancy. Take protection while having sex with your partner, do not use any intravenous drugs. Do not have sex with anyone who has sores and symptoms of STI. Make sure to use latex condoms while your intercourse. These precautions may reduce the risk of STI.
