On Ganesh chaturthi, we have a small puja at home. The puja is mainly done by children who are studying. Lord Ganesh is the god of wisdom and children worship Him so that they get wise. Puja is done early in the morning, after having bath and before having food. Lord Ganesha is offered flowered, coconut and modak or laddoos. Books are also kept near Him and worshipped on this day.
Whole house is cleaned for the puja. First of all, the puja thali is arranged. On a plate, dhoop, betelnut on a betel leaf is placed. Rice, hadi and kumkum are also placed. If you are bringing the idol home, then it is kept covered and on Ganesh Chaturthi, the cover is taken off, and puja is done for sthapana. It is better if a priest performs the puja as he knows all the mantras and rituals. If you are doing on your own, then you need to light agarbattis, diya and recite Ganesh stuti. You have to put sandalwood tilak on ganesh's forehead. Lastly do the aarti and seek His blessings.
