ESPN+ app casting to LGTV: Closed Captions won't stay off

I'm using the ESPN+ app on my Google Pixel phone, casting to my LG C1 TV via a Chromecast. I have Closed Captions turned off on the TV itself and on the ESPN+ app. Nonetheless, the terrible auto-subtitles pop up and cover the bottom third of the screen. If I hit the CC button on the ESPN app on my phone they stop coming up for about 30 seconds, then come back. It's incredibly annoying because the bottom third of the screen has important information.

Anyone know what I can try?
