Week 5: Development of Embryo

Find about the developments that a baby undergoes and the body changes that you may experience during the 5th week of pregnancy.

The 5th week of pregnancy is still the beginning of the pregnancy journey and there is a long way to go. But there is no need to worry as you will not even come to know when the time will fly. As your baby undergoes developments, you may also experience various pregnancy symptoms. Let us take a look at the baby’s development in the 5th week of pregnancy and body changes that you may experience.

Baby’s Development in the Pregnancy Week 5

This week, the cluster of cells that had begun to look like a round, solid mass, have started to grow lengthwise and the embryo now develops a head as well as a tail end. This is the stage where the central nervous system begins to develop by forming a niche in the top layer that extends to the tail end of the embryo. The cells fold up to create a hollow neural tube that forms your baby's brain and spinal cord. Simultaneously, the beginnings of what will be the spine, ribs and abdominal muscles are being created out of developing tissue.
Even though the baby's nervous system, spine and brain are being formed, and as you know they are the major component parts, your little one is really still very little. He or she is just about one tenth of an inch. That is 2mm to be precise. But relax; you are on the right track, as I am sure your urine test will have told you by now.

Body Changes During the 5th Week of Pregnancy

The fifth week of pregnancy is when a mother’s body is getting ready to face big changes. There would be a rapid rise in pregnancy hormone levels and uterus starts to grow. Though the pregnancy bump may not appear in the 5th week of pregnancy, experiencing few symptoms begins from now. It is sure that pregnancy symptoms are inimitable and impulsive.

Morning Sickness

Nausea and vomiting is a common change that can ensue any time in the 5th week of pregnancy. Instead of taking two or more large meals, intake of small meals all over the day supports to get relieved from these signs. In case of hyperemesis gravidarum, otherwise called as an extreme formula of morning sickness, getting hold of any food or liquid becomes very difficult.

Lightheaded and Dizzy Feeling

Occasionally, it is very common to feel lightheaded or dizzy in the 5th week of pregnancy. During pregnancy, cardiovascular system experiences changes such as heart rate rises up, heart thrusts supplementary blood in a minute and blood volume in the body upsurges by 30% to 50%. Generally, nervous system and cardiovascular system gets fine-tuned to these changes, and hence, suitable blood flows to brain. Sporadically, adapting to such a change quickly becomes impossible which ends up in lightheaded or dizzy feeling or even leads you to faint.

Frequent Urination

Pregnancy progression leads to the baby’s growth which puts pressure on bladder and causing to urinate often. This is said to be a complete pregnancy sign.

Food Cravings and Dislikes

Hormonal changes results in appetite change as well. Pregnant women may avoid few food stuffs which they enjoyed or start craving for foods which they did not like before. Undergoing food cravings and dislikes during pregnancy is not a big concern as it stands out to be a common symptom. Irresistible longing for pickles and other vinegary products is common in many women. However, you must consult your obstetrician before including anything new or unusual in your diet. You must strictly follow the diet prescribed by your obstetrician during pregnancy.

Excessive Salivation

Excess salivation is a symptom which can easily upsurge the morning sickness. No definite reason has been found out for excess salivation and so the hormonal changes are mainly blamed for such symptoms. Chewing Elaichi (cardamom), Saunf (fennel seeds) can help to deal with the symptoms of excessive salivation to a certain extent.

Constipation

Constipation may be experienced in the first trimester (5th week of pregnancy) which is one among the common body changes during pregnancy. Four out of 10 pregnant women face this problem at some point of time, especially when there is a lack of fluid. The common culprits of constipation are:
1. Pregnancy hormone progesterone reduces the transfer of food through digestive zone.
2. Diet changes because of morning sickness.
3. Pressure of growing womb on rectum.
In-take of fiber rich foods and liquid content can help to get rid of constipation. A cup of warm water in the beginning of the day would really help in coping with this body change.
Nothing to worry about the above said symptoms and body changes as they are very common during pregnancy. At the same time, not all women may experience these symptoms. Handling all these concerns is very easy in life. Following doctor’s advice can help in getting relief from body changes that worsen your health condition.

What kind of body changes are experienced during the 5th week of pregnancy? How to deal with the pregnancy symptoms during first trimester? What kinds of developments take place in a baby during the 5th week of pregnancy? Discuss here.
