The rainy season is highly unpredictable and it is impossible to predict when the heavy thunder clouds would gather to drench the earth with showers. While everybody looks forward to the monsoons in order to get a little respite from the terrible heat, this is a season that brings with it the threat of many diseases. Here is a list of top 5 rainy season illness in kids.

Common Cough and Cold

Common cold is a frequent visitor to every home which has small children especially in the monsoons. The common cold starts off innocently with a soreness or tightness in the throat and then quickly develops into a fully fledged running nose or a perennially blocked nose. The cough usually shows its presence by the 4th day of the onset of the cold and develops into an uncomfortable irritating spasm that exhausts children.
Usually, the cough and cold will last for a week and run out its course but if it persists longer than that then it is a serious problem. In case your kids have a cold keep them home for the first 3 days as this is the contagious phase. At home make sure your kids rest a lot and give them plenty of fluids especially warm ones like hot chocolate and soup.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a disease that originates in the upper respiration tracts and is shown to affect kids in increased frequency during the monsoons. Pneumonia is a serious problem and requires immediate medical attention. Some symptoms you should look out for are fever that reoccurs after every 3 days, chills in the body, nasal congestion, difficulty in breathing with wheezing sounds, chest pain, vomiting, appetite loss and abdominal discomfort.
Treatment for this disease lasts for about 2 weeks and the kid will usually be advised complete bed rest. It is possible to protect your child against pneumonia by vaccination.

Dengue

This is a mosquito borne infection that is highly prevalent in the monsoons especially in countries with tropical climate. Though the initial symptoms of Dengue resemble those of flue but later additional signs of bleeding and rashes appear.
Dengue is a painful disease accompanied by severe cramps and fever. Sometimes hospitalisation is recommended for proper treatment of dengue. Use every kind of protection against mosquito bites for your kids if you want to keep them safe from the effects of dengue. The prevalence of this disease rises by about 40% in the monsoons.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a bacteria born disease that has a lot of harmful effects but is relatively not discussed amongst parents. This disease is especially prone to infecting your kids if they hang around with strays or domesticated pets during rainy season.
The symptoms of Leptospirosis include headache, feverish spasms and muscle pains. At a later stage the lungs may bleed and the child may develop meningitis which is a painful and dangerous condition. Do not let your kids roam around in puddles or open unprotected water sources especially when they have wounds on their hands and feet. Make sure the cuts are bandaged and they wear boots.

Cholera

Cholera is an intestinal disease that is caused by the effect of bacteria known as Vibrio cholera. The bacteria get into food and water by faecal infection and then affect the intestine. The symptoms are fever, abdominal spasm, diarrhoea, rashes etc. The biggest preventive measure you can ensure your kids take is to make sure that they wash their hands thoroughly every time whenever they sit down for meals. Make sure that the hands are washed with soap and water after every washroom visit.
The monsoons are wonderful but it does make kids extremely vulnerable to certain kinds of diseases as many kinds of germs and bacteria are prevalent during this season.
