Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is one of the common disorders that affect babies and small children. Let us take a look at some home remedies for diarrhoea in children.

Diarrhoea is a very common problem affecting babies, small children as well as adults. The symptoms of diarrhoea can be immediately relived using some home remedies. Below mentioned are some home remedies to help a child coping with diarrhoea.

Home Remedies for Diarrhoea

Do not starve the baby. Let the baby eat or drink what she likes. The baby may prefer soup, juice, coconut water, rice cunjee with salt or other rice preparations, curds, banana and potatoes. If the baby is being breastfed, continue breastfeeding. The most important medicines for diarrhoea are rice cunjee and water, salt and sugar solution. These help in preventing dehydration by replacing the essential salts lost with the baby's loose motions. In watery diarrhoeas, no other medicines are needed.
You can add lime juice or orange juice for taste. Keep this solution in a refrigerator or cold place and consume as much as possible. For teenagers, aim for 1-2 glasses (200 ml glass) after each loose motion. For younger children aim for 1/2 to 1 glass after each loose motion. If the child does not keep taking much at a time or tends to vomit, give a few sips every 5-10 minutes day and night. The idea is to ensure enough urine output. Make a fresh solution after 24 hours. Wherever possible, boil the water and cool it before adding salt and sugar. Though boiled water is preferable, it is not essential. Once the solution is ready, do not boil it.

Other Natural Remedies for Diarrhoea

Let us take a look at some more natural remedies for diarrhoea.

Nutmeg Remedy

Nutmeg is considered very useful for helping small children cope with diarrhoea. You can add few pinches of nutmeg powder, sugar and apple and boil it for few minutes. After it cools down, you can give this concoction to your child.

Curd

Banana

Banana is also very effective for treating diarrhoea in children. Banana helps in binding the loose stools. It is also one of the energy boosting foods.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate is great to help the child cope with diarrhoea. You can extract juice of pomegranate and give to your child from time-to-time through the day.

Carrot

Carrot juice or puree is very good for helping children cope with diarrhoea. You can give it to your child a couple of times in a day.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk is good for dealing with all the digestion related issues. It is also very effective on issues like indigestion. You can add a little cumin seed powder for soothing effect on stomach.

Honey

Honey is also used since ages for dealing with problems like diarrhoea. For treating diarrhoea, honey can be given by mixing it in plain water. Honey should not be given to children who are less than one year old as it can cause botulism in them.

Fennel Seeds Tea

Fennel seeds can be boiled in water along with some sugar to taste. After this concoction cools down it can be given to children at regular intervals for coping with diarrhoea and stomach pain caused due to it.
Do not give any over-the-counter medicine to your child and discuss the above remedies with your doctor before trying it on your child.
Note that if the patient is passing blood or mucus in stools, he should immediately consult a doctor since he may need other medicines as well. Normally, thriving breastfed babies sometimes pass frequent watery motions. This is not diarrhoea and does not need any treatment.
