Hi All,

My system conked off few days back and hence the delay. Thanks Kirti, Hi, Shree, Nirmala, Hello and Nila for your wishes. Hope all of you are doing fine.

So here it goes
I had an appointment on Friday (Mar 16th – my EDD) and my OBGYN checked me and said that I was 75 effaced but no dilation. She planned to induce me on Saturday itself. Reluctantly I agreed for it. Got admitted on Saturday morning at 6 am. They gave me an enema and the induction gel was placed at the mouth of the cervix. The doctor did something else to loosen up the cervix and dilate it much faster…it was painful(something called stripping). Then I was taken to my room where my mom, cousin sister and hubby were waiting. They kept me entertained throughout my early labour pains. The pain started 15 min after the gel was placed…was more similar to menstrual cramps. I started getting contractions after a while but was irregular. Then at around 1:30 pm my bag of waters broke and my contractions became even stronger. The doctor checked me and said that I was 3 cm dilated and then shifted me to the Labour room. Was on IV which had oxytocin…my contraction were too strong by then and I was tempted to ask for epidural but when my doctor checked me …she said that with every 2 strong contractions I was dilating a cm. That boosted my confidence level and she asked me to hang around and told me that I will be done soon. Very soon I was dilated to 7cm…the contractions were lasting for a long time. There was this nurse beside me and she asked me to practice my breathing exercises…basically take long deep breaths…..then after a while I had a strong urge to push but when the doc checked me she said that I was 9 cm dilated and had to wait. That was the toughest part…she asked me to pant and breathe deeply. I almost waited for 15 min with a strong urge to push and then when the head doctor came in to check me I was fully dilated. They asked me to push. I pushed, pushed and pushed but then my little one never wanted to come out. I felt a needle prick down there…knew they were doing an episiotomy (4th degree one). They tried with vacuum suction first but it failed. So they had to use forceps to deliver him. To our surprise the baby had a single loop of cord around his neck and was big too. Shashank was born at 3:22 pm and weighted 8.4 lbs and 20\" in length. My9th month scan was normal with no cord around the neck and the estimated baby weight was only 7.5lbs.

Happy that my regular walking and squatting paid me well. Thanks to the message board…I have read so many birth stories here to boost my confidence level. Above all I thank the almighty for giving me strength and courage to pass through this phase.
