Hi Hello

I am a second time mom due in May. I agree with X2. I have been there too... struggling really hard to B. feed my first one as much as I could. Could feed only up to 6 months while the milk flow had steadily decreased from 7 feeds a day in the first month to only 1 feed a day in the sixth month. YET.. the way I looked at it was that I tried whatever I could in my means - and that means the most to me. Not the fact that my baby did not get fully B. fed. When things are not in your control, you have no reason to be guilty. Just do what you can and substitute with Formula. Even though I was feeding only 1 feed a day in the sixth month, it still gives me immense satisfaction, because I was only doing my best and even to date when some one asks me how long did you breast feed - I tell them without a second thought ' six months' , while it is always presumed that the child was only on the B. milk for six months, but to me, it means just as much as that.

Stop feeling guilty for something that is beyond your control and start taking control by being happy with what you can do best.

Take care and wish you all the best.

STM

Nila

Thanks for following up.Im desperately trying all I can to get her exclusively to bf,but still no luck. My milk supply is not enough to meet her appetite. After every bf session(that takes literally an hour for both sides),I need to give her formula ,else she starts to cry within half hour.Im not able to get an appointment with the lactation consultant.I checked the lll site and the next meeting in our area is only in April.Ive sent an email though.Let' s see.
My post partum depression is mainly due to my failure at bf and Im heading nowhere on this.Im trying a lot of strategies but nothing seem to be working. My hubby after seeing my plight tells me not to feel guilty and start her exclusively on formula but Im still reluctant.
I went thru the message on Feb board about milk supply ,but unfortunately ,my mom has me on this pathiya sappadu and she would not let me eat anything except garlic from that list....Sigh...
Oh so many woes ,I feel like breaking down even as I write this..
I hope I can manage ,even if I can' t ,I hope I don' t bury myself in guilt.

Hello,

Don´ t beat yourself over this too much...Breast feeding is good but if you are not able to do this for some reason, then don´ t kill yourself over this...

I had the same problem...and nothing that I tried ever worked...even went to a lactation consultant..that also didnt increase my milk supply...

So now I´ m pumping every 3-4 hours and supplementing the rest by formula...my baby is thriving and doing well..touchwood...

Motherhood is more than just being able to breast feed..its about nurturing, giving love etc...you can get the same feeling when you cuddle your baby close and give her a bottle filled with your milk or formula..

Your husband is right...DO NOT feel guilty...there are tons of us out there who are not able to exclusively breast feed inspite of our best efforts...

Try everything that people suggest (you can also try putting cabbage leaves over your breasts for a couple of hrs...some people swearby that also)...but if it doesnt work, then let it go...

Get a good pump (I use Medella electric dual pump) or rent one from the hospital...give yourself some rest (You need it desperately I think)...you might be this close to breaking up...and it will not be good for you or your baby...

There will be many people who will make you feel guilty about all this..DO NOT talk to them...it will make you more depressed!! I´ m speaking from experience...

As I said, try all the suggestions if possible, but if it doesnt work, then let it go..making less milk does not make you into a bad mother...supplementing by formula is alright...and works well for so many other women...

Take care...
