Due Date Club October 2006:Getting registered with doctor in US
2006-07-19
Name: Ruchi Soni

Hi, One more question..
We have an insurance from my husband's company for pregnancy. I will be going to US in 2 weeks time and since it is already 7th month, so i will have to consult a doctor in US as soon as i reach there. I would like to know
- How to select a doctor
- Do i have to book a bed in soem hospital beforehand or the doctor will do it
- Is it a problem for a doctor to take a new case in 7th month as i am moving from India to US? As of now everything is normal
- How much is the overall expense and time taken in the process
- If you are aware of any doctor in Stamford, CT, please let me know, such that my husband can take an appointment

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ruchi,

If you already have insurance form your husbands compnay.. then you would be probably covered..but yes couple of questions you wud need to ask the insurance provider..
1) Details about the kind of plan you have
2)Is pregnancy and child birth 100% covered or not..becoz some insurance companies do not cover it 100%

Moreover ....
1) U would have to choose a doctor which comes under your insurance provider..that you can track through the insurance providers website..else you would end up paying huge amount..

2) Once you are able to locate the doctor .. call the doctor and reconfirm with the doctor if she covers your plan and insurance provide..

3) Good idea to take the appointment mmediately ..incase doctor give u a late appointment date.. u can always request for an early one stating that you ar in 7th month and first time in US..
4)Booking before delivery really depends on hospital to hospital and also on your doctor..Some doctors do it for you.. at some hospitals u have to call and preregister yourself around 8th month..with some u dont need to do anything.. but as pregnancy comes under emerency so anyways the hospital will take care of you irrespective of buking.. but good idea to ask yuour doc and do the booking

5) No its not a problem for a doc take any case.. but i would suggest to ask ppl around or may be u can ask ur husband to ask people in office about the good doctor..

I am in NJ so cant help you much with Connecticut..

Lastly.. its a good idea to take a fitness letter from your doctor in India .. that you are fit to fly and you are not under high risk pregnancies and that whatever month you are running..also its a good idea to check with the airlines as to till which month they allow to travel.. also carry all your reports from India...
Good luck!!

Welcome to US.finding a doctor here is not very tough.you can just use a search engine to find a doctor near you.there are lot of indian doctors also practising in US so you wont have any kind of problem.
I will say it will be a good idea if you take an appointment within the first 10 days or so.
here usually for delivery you dont have to book a room or bed.if your contraction is about 5 minutes or your water breaks you have to go to the hospital.nurses will guide you night and day...you just have to give them a call.
your husband does have a insurance so it wont be expensive.because each insurance works in a different way so you can give your insurance company a call and get all the details.
just get confirmed with the doctor you select if they accept you insurance.
if it is your first pregnancy you can take LAMAZE classes from the haspital you select you you will get more ideas how hospitals and delivery process everything working here.
i dont know anything about indian hospitals as both my deliveries were here.they take really good care of you and your baby.you dont have to worry about anything.have a comfortable journey and great pregnany.take care.
