Due Date Club October 2006:Work Stress

Hi everyone,

I'm in the 27th week now and have been really getting tired lately. More so I think it's my work that zapps my energy level. Work takes up nearly 10-11 hours during the day and it's only going to get more busy in the next 2 months (when I'll be in the thrid trimester). Unfortunately the kind of industry that I am, they expect you to work weekends too on and off.

I feel depressed thinking that pregnancy is one time when you're supposed to take it easy and relax but no one at my work seems to get it. Plus I just changed over to a new department so there's the learning curve issue because of which I'm not doing so good at the assignments as before. I'm worried about what will happen after the baby. My mom will be here for a while but leave in about 2 months. I just don't know what to do, quit after the baby or go back to work. I have tried hinting at part time too at work but it doesn't seem feasible. In fact they seem unhappy about the fact that I'm not devoting enough time and not focussed enough. I don't what it is but I'm beginning to feel stupid as it appears that I'm making a lot of mistakes at work.

Because of this I stay depressed a lot and almost every weeknight I don't sleep well thinking about how I perform in the new assignments. I sleep well during weekends though. Lately I don't even feel like getting out of bed in the mornings during weekdays. I don't know what's happening. Maybe I'm just thinking too much.

Any suggestions as to how I can reduce the stress or this depressing feeling. I don't want it to affect the baby.

Hello Aashi,

If I were in your shoes, I would give preference for baby's health. Work will be there always. If you were not able to do your work efficiently now, may be later, when you are settled with all other family matters, you could improve and do your best. You will definitely have second chance. But, coming to pregancy it's not like that.

Baby's health and your health is more important. I am just conveying you my opinion. Plan accordingly and set your priorities.

Regards,
blessed_mom.

hey ..

i know how you are feeling as i am slo going through the same situation, my work takes 10-12 hours every day .....

and my group has been bought by another company and so there is more tension about job security and there is more work ...alo, part-time is not possible in my company for now ...

But do try to chill, when i become really tensed , i try to think of things in along term and what will matter to me .... when i see that aspect, though my job does matter, the baby seems to taking much more important role and so it helps to set my priorities ...

in fact, me and my husband have also discussed about me taking a temporary break from work , if the stress becomes too much, but i do not want ot do that as htta would mean joining in anew job as soon as the baby is born ...

Anyway , try not to think abt work when trying to sleep, i find reading some comic books, listening to music, spending time wiht my husband very useful to divert my mind from work before i sleep ....

Also, i do not bring work to home nowadyas , i leave my laptop at work itself :) ..and switch off the cel phone to avoid calls from work during times you do not want to get disturbed during weekends /wekdays ...

This is what i do, and it does help me ...

hope you are able to find a balance b/w work and home soon ....

take care,
-P

Thank you so much for the suggestions.

I have been so occupied with work and work related tension since May that I feel I haven't enjoyed the pregnancy much. The thought of that make me sad I guess.

I will try not to think about it too much. My husband and I have discussed about me taking a break from work after the baby but it would mean looking for a new job all over again with a baby in the picture. Sometimes I feel life in a foriegn country with no family support is so tough.
