Due Date Club October 2006:29th week ultrasound?

Hi Archie & all,

I am at 25 weeks. US at 20 week was normal and baby has lots of activity. OB measured 1st time length of funda ? and wondered its larger (I feel it looks lopsided, instead of round/oval its more elliptical) and wants an US at next monthly appt. That time is also when we do the glucola 1 hr test. Something about check for excess amniotic fluid etc.

I looked online and it seems this US is usually to check for diabetes, fetal hydrops or congenital disorders. I try not to worry and assume everything is fine, just routine extra test and hopefully at most its diabetes... BUT, am slightly nervous - wish the OBs could be more forthcoming in sharing info.

Anyways, any input? If the baby looked fine at 20 weeks, it couldn't suddenly have hydrops? or congenital?

Thanks!!

anon,
I may sound weird while saying *hold your horses* but that's what I exactly want you to say.

You are un-necessarily tasking your brain too much.

Fundus height measurement can be different and not supposed to be handled that seriously. However, it's the only way to get rough estimate about gestation, I am certain however that your OB believes that babys growth at this stage is sparse and fundus height can match or not to the gestation. As long as fundus height is +/- 2cm from the exact gestation all is well.

your one hour glucose test is to investigate on possibility of gestational diabetes and nothing serious. I have known each board has had a few cases with GD and all led healthy pregnancy and birth to beautiful healthy babies. Don't task your brain on this part even if turns out to be high glucose level in your case, you may be advised to take control on carbohydrate intake or if required an insulin injections, either are fine for you and baby -this is only when you turns out to be GD positve, lets hope you are not GD+ve.

you will not know congenital defects because after 20 weeks ultrasounds are not that detailed as like you had at that time. If all was well believe all will be fine.

Hydrops like thoughts are dreadful and I see absolutely no connection with that, why on the face of earth you like to think this way. You should never think negative and leave your pessimism out of your mind.

You know many of members don't appreciate silence from OB but I think sometime OBs know that little they tell patients, which is incomplete knowledge and patients are going to get nervous for no reasons. Sometime for things those are out of control and not in their hands. Trust in your OB who will do best justice to your baby and your pregnancy, your health.

I am sorry but reading your concerns were way off from the connection and I had to express my heart to you than blandly saying nothing is like that and don't worry.

Archie

anon,
I always tell members that have to have trust in your OB and also you both must cherish pregnancy memories all through life. In this regard if there is no compatibility between patient and OB it's time to switch OB.

However, many OBs would prefer you coming slowly and you question things on ground not way off. It's true that you read on net and at time wrong sections getting you worried and this if continued on each visits it aggrevates and spoils the relation.
Personaly I liked one sentence from your message and has a lot more meaning
", but the delivery is real personal time".
YOu said this cent percent correct. Having sweet talk through out the pregnancy and C-section at the end due to some haste is also not good but at least you will have sweet memories of Drs. visit. But if you have always warded off with queries and face uncomfortable situation in labor then perhaps it's going to be more painful.

Remember one thing, Obs may not tell all in detail and it's perhaps same even with the OB where you feel comfortable. It's good to let patient know about happenings but not necessarily to provide them with information that is going to get worried.

It's true that some of the discomforts will get worse as you approach delivery time and the same sentece will be told by each OB, the way it's told will make you feel acceptable or dejected. backache, headache, vomitings, breathlessness, painful stretched skin, indigestion, acidity, all are going to aggrevate as you are going to approach delivery but does not mean it's bad or not treatable. You can have plans on diet and timings and will make feel better. Of course can't stop but can be felt better.

to change OB or not is your choice.

if you come with concerns those are in limit, I am sure IP members will share their experience and you will feel at home.

But finally all will be handled by Dr. because your Dr. knows case better than anyone.

Thanks for the clarifications. Generally what I thought, but wanted someone to confirm it. For me, "little info" causes me worry, if people are up front and lay it out, I am more fine with it. I simply like to know.

My OB I am sure is very competent and has a soothing voice. My annoyance is
a. she doesn't share in detail what she's doing or why
b. Any concerns of nerve pain, muscle pain or general are always met with (what I find pessimistic) - oh welcome to pregnancy and it will just get worse and there's no cure ! I don't know if this is normal or just her. It irritates me that I know not everything has a solution but could she just suggest if it gets worse see a chiropracter or whatever. I am just starting to wonder how I will deal with her pessimism, come delivery time ... Until now it was kinda ok, its not that close, but delivery is the real personal time ... If you have any tips on how to better my communication with my OB, I would be so thankful !!
