Due Date Club February 2005:Serious feeding problem...help...

Hi Friends
Update from my end is, I am blessed with baby boy on 5thFeb., which was the due date. Had to undergo an emergency C-section at the last minute. anyways no regrets about it.
But I have a serious problem now with my baby's feeding. For the first 3days he didnot take milk from me, the very sight of my breast made him furious and kept crying very badly, so had to express milk and feed him. Later he started sucking slowly. Now from 3 days, he is behaving even more strangely. He goes to sleep only if he is sucking. Whenever he cries I take him to feed, the moment he is on the breast he sucks for about 3-4mins, and then goes off to sleep. The moment I put him on the bed, he wakes up & cries cries and doesn't sleep. When I try feeding him in sleeping position, he sleeps off for 2-3 hrs.
Please help me am feeling so helpless, just unable to control my tears. am crying very badly. am trying my best to come out of this problem, but unable to. your suggestions will be of great help.

Regards
Madhavi

Dear Madhavi,
Don't cry and don't be in despair. It's not good for you as you are delivered mother. You may get severe headache(s).
Try to feed him both from expressed milk and on breast as well. It's the fact that at this stage your baby won't need more milk. another thing he is not so used to suckle on nipples and may be your breasts are engorged (swollen) so he is not able to catch nipple very well. Do one thing hold your nipple in two fingers directing to his mouth so that he can hold it properly and get milk while suckling on your breast. reember more he suckle more is the milk production, don't leave your fingers from nipple unless he is properly done (it can take 10-15 minutes). Once he is used to then after a few days you can hold nipples in fingers just to direct him and once he grasp it you can leave your fingers.
Another suggestion, if you use pump to express milk, sometime pump will bring out your nipple better than your fingers can do, in between pumping you can stop and start feeding him on breast.
See you will start smiling soon, it's common problem what you are facing and most of the first time mothers managing without expert help/elders would suffer like you are.
Another thing is to buy some breast feeding book, to know how to hold baby proper and take it from there.
Archie
