Due Date Club February 2005:Diet question

Hi girls,

I want to know is it ok to drink a glass of milk after delivery especially if you are breastfeeding? I have been getting mixed opinions, some say you must because otherwise your body uses up calcium from your bones and you get oesteoperosis later on and some say that you shouldn't because milk is very fattening and will make it harder for you to loose your pregnancy weight! I'm confused?

Hana,

Milk is one of the complete food products which provides you carbs, proteins, and calcium, (very important for bones). You are right that a diet lacking in calcium will most definitely lead to osteoporosis later.
From what i know, you should have at least 2-3 cups of milk daily, especially when breastfeeding. Try a low fat milk (1% or 2% rather than whole milk).
There are many other things you can avoid, to prevent weight gain. Any food which is just empty calories, like mithai, choc, etc, avoid too much ghee, avoid fried food, but i would not advise to cut down milk as it provides many essential food groups.

Hope this helps.
