Due Date Club February 2005:Question on Traditional Ghee intake
2005-01-23
Name: Deepa

Niti,

Thanks for this great informational article. It is indeed great to clarify the traditions against facts.

My question is related to intake of Ghee. I have been told by many traditional and modern Indian moms, that during last few weeks of pregnancy, one should increase the intake of Ghee, have ghee in hot milk, pinni, besan seera etc.
I have not heard of ghee/fat intake in Americans, and they seem to deliver fine.
My question: Does increase in ghee before and after delivery really help, or is it just one of those myths.

hi deepa!

how are you keeping? ;)

as for ghee intake.. i am keeping off it as well apart from ghee intake that i take in my daal or some days i have a paratha... ;)

i believe you should have some ghee intake but not too much as it just adds to your body weight... have it in moderation... ;) also in old days.. emphasise on ghee was okay as woman use to work soo much so they would shed all that weight off where nowsdays most woman dont do much manual work so the fat is stored there.. ;)

as niti said mums are mums so even my mum is emphasising on it but i am controling it myself.. ;)

hope this will help!

love to you and your little one!

Hi Deepa,

Thanks for your message!

As far as my knowledge goes (also subscribing to the modern view), ghee intake does not help much. Originally it was believed to give strength and power to the would-be-mother for facing the labour. Some also believe that it smoothens the path of delivery. It sounds weird. More so, too much of ghee intake adds to the fats and ultimately it causes problems in delivery. You are right! Nowhere in the western world, people take ghee before delivery, yet things go alright.

I personally never liked ghee and inspite of my mom insisting for it, I am keeping myself strongly off ghee. Yeah, I do take a little ghee on dal sometime.

I think it would be nice if others also share their views on this. Guys, please write in...

take care,
niti
