Many of us start celebrating Diwali from Dhanteras. Some even do not know why we do this. On Dhanteras, Lord Yama, the lord of death, is worshipped on this day so this day is also known as Yamadeepdan. People worship the lord to provide wealth and prosperity.

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi, is celebrated every year on thirteenth day of Krishna paksha of Ashwin month, according to Hinducalendar. In simple words, it occurs two days before the main festival of Diwali. In the year 2024, Dhanteras will be celebrated on 29th of October.

Dhanteras: Festival of Wealth

It is believed that on Dhantrayodashi day, Goddess Laxmi had emerged from the ocean with Amrit kalash during Samudra Manthan, churning of the world. This is the reason why Lord Kuber, lord of wealth is worshipped on this day. It is a tradition of buying gold, silver or utensils made of metals to welcome Goddess Laxmi at home.

• Protects children from health hazards.

• Helps recover from chronic diseases and other body ailments.

Why Do We Celebrate Dhanteras?

There are several stories, but the story of 16-year-old son of King Hima is the most famous one. The horoscope of the son of king Hima predicted that he would die on the fourth day of his marriage and the cause would be snake bite. Although the king prevented him to see girls, he met a princess and married her. His wife did not allow him to sleep on that decisive day. In the evening she laid all her ornaments in a basket near the entrance and lit lamps around it. She sang songs so that her husband does not fall asleep.

When Lord Yama arrived in the form of snake to take the soul of her husband, his eyes got dazzled with the brightness. Since Yama could not enter the house, he quietly left the house next day. The prince got saved due to the intelligence and smartness of his wife. Thus gold, silver and other metals are worshipped on Dhanteras along with praying to Lord Yama.

One of another popular saying is that Goddess Laxmi emerged with the pot of Amrit, elixir of immortality. It is also a tradition to buy gold or silver coins on which God Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi are stamped.

How to Celebrate Dhanteras?

On Dhanteras people buy gold, silver, metal objects or utensils and new clothes. They light lamps in the evening to welcome goddess Laxmi into their houses. Laxmi, on the day of Dhanteras is honoured as the Goddess of wealth. They pray for wealth, success, prosperity and abundance.

Dhanteras Pooja has special significance for business men. Blessings of Goddess Laxmi is sought for yearlong success and progress in work. This is also a reason that people purchase something new made of gold or silver to symbolize prosperity.

Everyone waits for this auspicious day with excitement as this is the lucky day for household and business. They renovate and decorate their houses with lights, earthen lamps and flowers. Women draw rangoli on the entrance and near the place of Pooja.
