Week 12: Baby Passes Urine

Week 12: Baby Passes Urine

This week is the last week of your first trimester and by now your baby has undergone a lot of changes. Let us take a look at the crucial developments that have taken place in your baby in this week.

Congratulations! You have arrived at the final week of your first trimester. Apart from the physical and psychological changes that you are going through, your little one too is coping with plenty of changes for quite some time now. In fact your little one has changed beyond recognition this week.

Baby’s Development in Pregnancy Week 12

Guess what? This week your baby will pass urine for the very first time. But you will have to wait quite a while before you can toilet train him or her. But still it is quite exciting and you may want to commemorate this particular week for the yet unborn. She has also learnt to suck and can swallow the fluid that surrounds her (therefore the need to urinate) as well as use the muscles of her mouth to frown, pout and open and close her jaws.
In fact, quite a few of her muscles are developing and so the baby tends to move around quite a lot. Not all the muscles are working just yet but she can use the muscles that will aid her in breathing after birth. There is good coordination between her brain and a few muscles that help her to curl her little toes or make a fist, rotate her wrists and feet or happily play football in the amniotic sac. Well, at least she seems to have started on the warm up exercises.
Toenails, fingernails and the earlobes have also made their anticipated appearance as the umbilical cord starts to circulate blood between the membranes on the uterus wall and the foetus to provide nourishment to the baby. The placenta is now in action.

Other Developments in the Baby

The skeleton of your angel is made of cartilage. In the next few weeks her bone shall harden. When she is born her skeleton shall be made of 300 parts of cartilage and bone. In course of time they shall fuse to form stronger and larger bones.
Along with her skeletal developments, her internal organs and intestines are also developing. Her kidneys are now functioning and pumping out urine into the bladder. Your baby now has a prominent facial profile with her nose and chin in place. Her vocal cords have also developed well now and she is capable of crying as well. Her brain is also developed and she can feel physical pain.
Even though she is not moving much inside your stomach, you shall find her wriggling when you poke your belly.

Bodily Changes during Pregnancy Week 12

You might be wondering how fast time flies now that you are nearing the end of your first trimester. Problems like exhaustion and morning sickness may appear bit better now. However, mood swings shall still continue with the hormonal changes inside you. You might seem busy most of the time leafing through the perfect nursery colour scheme and planning about the changes you need in your home before her arrival. You might even try decorating her nursery yourself now. However, be careful and ask for help as and when necessary.

Ultra Sound Scans

You would be thoroughly excited to see your little one in the ultrasound scans. Your doctor may ask you to go for an ultrasound scan between the 10th and 14th week. The ultrasound scans help revealing normal growth and health of your baby. The prenatal scans shall take around 20-30 minutes at this stage.

Your Work and Pregnancy

Even though you have not gained much weight over the last few weeks, your baby bump shall start growing now. This is the time when you need to prioritise things and think about your commitments. You may want to tell your boss about your upcoming due date.
It is always a good idea to wait till your first trimester before spreading the exciting news about your pregnancy. You need to be extremely careful about the miscarriages and other complications that arise particularly in the first trimester.
However, if conditions like nausea and morning sickness are making you unproductive and sick, you may inform you boss. When it comes to deciding whether to quit or take leave, you need to plan very carefully. You can discuss all the possibilities with your doctor and your boss.
Make sure to carry your own water and some light snacks to your office. Also, wear lose fitted clothes, to ensure ease of movements.

Which developments can be expected in a baby by week 12 of pregnancy? What precautions should be taken after the first trimester? What kind of problems can be expected by the end of first trimester of pregnancy? Discuss here.
