Bangalore - the happening city

Bangalore - the happening city

With pleasant weather all the year round, the garden city of Bangalore is gaining popularity as a favourite tourist destination.

Bangalore is known to most as the IT (Information Technology) hub, also dubbed as the 'Silicon Valley of India', but there is much more to this fascinating city, you'll discover. As cities go, it may not figure on your tourist itinerary the way Mumbai or Delhi with its endless attractions would, nevertheless Bangalore will not fail to charm, especially if you allow it to grow over you.

Modern, yet traditional

Bangalore is a city with a character. The city is a fantastic blend of the modern and the traditional. On one hand Bangalore boasts of a vibrant nightlife and innumerable pubs where youngsters gyrate to hip hop, and on the other are the middle-class homes that wake up early morning to the tunes of devotional music and the scent of the agarbattis and malige. This happening city is as renowned for its pubs as it is for its many temples. The pace of life is just right - not too fast and not too slow, and therein lies the charm of this place.

Bull Temple

While it is certainly not a temple town, it has a lot of temples worth a visit, not so much for their architecture as for their feel. One of the oldest temples in the city is the Bull Temple situated on Bugle Hill near Basvanagudi which boasts a huge monolith Nandi. It is a quiet temple - not too crowded - where you can pay obeisance and then sit on the steps contemplating or just taking in the scene while sipping tender coconut water. Next to the temple is the Bugle Rock park, which has been done up beautifully with landscapes, soft piped music and water fountains. There is a walkway for serious walkers and the usual amusement paraphernalia the swings and jungle gyms - for children to romp around. A platform at the centre of the park makes for an innovative stage for musical soirees and plays which are held every Saturday.

Garden city

Bangalore, in fact, is also known as the 'Garden city'. Tree-lined boulevards and parks at intervals are ubiquitous features here. Two famous landmarks that cut a swathe in the city precincts are the Lalbaug Botanical Gardens and Cubbon Park. Lalbaug, standing at 240 acres is a horticultural centre with thousand species of tropical and sub-tropical plants. There is a separate section devoted completely for the roses, and trees are labeled making the whole experience of tree-watching not just exhilarating and entertaining, but also educative.
Apart from being a great place for an evening outing or a picnic spot, Cubbon Park also has other kiddie attractions. It houses the Visveshvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Government Museum, and Bal Bhavan. Bal Bhavan has an amusement park with a toy train which is greatly popular with children and an aquarium. With gardens and tree-lined avenues everywhere, the weather in Bangalore is pleasant all the year round, earning the city an unusual sobriquet of 'air-conditioned city'.

Kalakshetra - cultural place

Bangalore is a culturally vibrant place with a lot of theatres or kalakshetras that showcase experimental plays and musical programmes. The arterial M.G. Road with is coffee shops and bookshops is a great evening haunt to catch up with friends and gupshup. There is plenty here to do over weekends; you only need to plan your schedule in advance so as to catch much and miss little. And if that was not enough, there is no dearth of getaways from the city for weekend excursions.

Getaways

To begin with there is the retreat in nature's lap at Banerghatta National Park, approximately 25 kilometres from the heart of the city. As anywhere in forests and parks, here you can have your fill of wildlife - tigers, elephants, bison, panthers and a variety of bird species. Then there is a health resort at Nandi Hills. Also worth a visit is a one-banyan tree forest at Ramohalli. This single tree is like a mini-forest!
While in Bangalore, also visit the Nrityagram village, the classical dance academy at Hesarghatta which has become a big tourist attraction over the years. Visitors go to see the village which has won a 'rural architecture award' for its design.

Do your own thing

Ticking off places of interest on the itinerary is not always the ideal way to explore any city, and in case of Bangalore, even more so. The way to take in the city is by walking its lanes and bylanes, looking for the pulse that makes the city tick. And for once, you'll be well-advised to leave the shopping malls alone. Start the day, instead, by eating dosa - not at the MTR - but at Davengere Butter Dosa outlets at various nooks in the city. Wash it down with a strong coffee at any of the roadside shops or cafes; idle around in the markets taking in the colourful flower-stalls; shop for silks, sandalwood and spices at emporiums; and be content just watching the city's many moods.
