Tips for Raising Children for Success

Tips for Raising Children for Success

Hard work, focus and making right use of opportunities are the sure signs of success. Such qualities must be inculcated in children right from early childhood to help them walk the path of success when they grow-up. Let us take a look at some tips for raising children for success.
Success is one of the factors in life that depends on an elusive combination of right use of opportunities, hard work and a good attitude. While seeking opportunities and the ability to execute hard work largely depends on the individual, a good attitude is cultivated from childhood and depends upon the things a child is taught by parents. Therefore, there is actually a lot you can do as a parent to raise your child for success.

Promote the Ability to Work Hard

Let your child learn the virtues of hard work by letting him or her do all assigned schoolwork and homework by own efforts. Parents who complete their child’s assignments actually send their kids the unhealthy message “it is not important for you to work hard as I will do most of your work for you”. Instead let your kid know that assignments and course work are meant to be done on own with the help of supervision of parents. Apart from school work a kid needs to be given other age appropriate chores which are to be fulfilled as a way of contributing to the household.

Encourage a Positive Attitude

A positive attitude is one of the cornerstones of success and there is a lot that a parent can do in order to build this attitude. Teach your children to realise the fact that while setbacks are temporary and can be overcome, it is the right attitude that will ultimately pave the way to success. Give your children real life examples that show how a positive attitude has helped many eminent personalities in conquering obstacles and achieving success. You can also quote examples from you and your partner’s lives where a positive attitude has helped you fight obstacles.

Hone the Competitive Spirit

It is no secret that your kids exist in a highly competitive world where participation in different competitions will be inevitable as a way of professional growth. Expose your kid early to competitions, contests, discussion forums, debates etc all of which will help hone the competitive spirit. Children need to learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy competition too and it is parents who can teach them the many advantages of fair play. A balanced yet competitive spirit will help your child climb the ladders of success faster.

Insist on Physical Fitness

A healthy body and an active mind often go hand in hand. It is well documented that exercise boosts brain power and helps in increasing concentration and focus. Exercising and maintaining a fit physique will help your child maintain better stamina to work hard. The habit of being physically fit needs to be incorporated from childhood. Make sure that your child gets 30 to 50 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. Also maintain the habit of serving your child healthy food comprising of complex carbohydrates, lean protein and healthy fat along with fibre. The habit of eating healthy will ensure good health and increase the chances of success in life.

Sharpen the Mind

There are so many brain boosting games and activities that your kid can participate in to increase the intellectual capacity and IQ level. The Internet is a great resource of IQ boosting activities and you can have a fun time indulging in them with your kids. Playing chess is also a good activity for it teaches strategy and the skill of planning ahead; both of which are instrumental for success in life.
While ultimately it is your child who will have to achieve success, you can do a lot as a parent to raise your child for success. These simple tips will surely help you make a big difference to your kid’s life.

Without hard work it is not possible to be successful so inculcating this quality is very essential in children.

I agree with you Pooja, but we need to teach children how to seek opportunities. If they don't have right opportunities how will they succeed?
