Keeping Teens Safe Online - Instagram Launches a Parent's Guide

Instagram launches a parent’s guide to help parents be involved with their children’s social media experience in a non-intrusive way. Read on to find out what parents can do to educate children to use social media platforms in fruitful and safe ways.

Internet safety is one of the biggest concerns of parents these days but they cannot force their kids especially the teens, to stop being online. Being on social media platforms has become a part of life. The reasons why parents are concerned are that the teens today are spending more and more time on the social media apps through their mobile devices. This is not the only concern. They are also worried a lot about issues like the private information about their children being exposed publicly. And two of the other important issues which could not be overlooked are the offensive comments and cyber bullying.

To address the above issues concerning parents, Instagram has recently introduced a guide for parents which can help them control their children’s Instagram experience. Here is what Instagram suggests parents to do with the help of the available tools and through the launch of its Parent’s Guide.

1)  Help Children Create a Private Account

It is a must to make sure that children are creating a private account on Instagram through which they can moderate their followers. A private account can facilitate them to approve or remove any follower at any time.

2) Blocking Unwanted Accounts

Parents must ensure that their children know how they can block unwanted or suspicious accounts. In this way they can avoid unwanted interactions. It can also help them to block an account from viewing or posting a comment on the post.

3) Reporting Cyber Bullying

Children must know how to anonymously report the content that is posted specifically for the purpose of bullying or harassing someone. Bullying is one of the issues that affect children psychologically as well as hamper their self-esteem and confidence. So, parents must not only train their children to deal with the issues of cyber bullying but also to deal with bullying in general.

4) Filtering Unwanted and Offensive Comments

Children must be aware of how they must filter the unwanted and offensive comments that can become a threat to their self-esteem and confidence. Offensive and abusive language is automatically detected and filtered out by Instagram. In addition to this, parents and children can together create a custom list of emojis, words and phrases that should be filtered out.

5) Teaching Children to Manage Time

Not only children but also parents spend a lot of time unknowingly on their devices. Instagram is here with a feature to manage the daily time spent on it. Parent can see how much time is spent on average by children on Instagram, set daily time limit and avoid push notification by muting them in order to make sure that they use Instagram only during the allotted time slot.

Although, parents may help children follow the above mentioned five steps to make their experience on the sites like Instagram a more positive and safer one, it is also important for them to personally make use of these tools. In this way parents can not only understand why are teen so into it but also they can raise informed teens by being informed about its advantages and disadvantages. It can also become an interesting way for parents for being involved with their children and family.

Exploring various safety tools and features on Instagram and other social media platforms along with your teen is the best ways to start the conversation about it with him or her. These safety features are very easy to use which can help you to teach your child how to have a control over what they share on the social media platforms. This is indeed a great way to be part of your child’s social media experience in a non-intrusive way.

What according to you is the right age to allow children to access social media platforms? How can using social media platforms help teens? What are the ways to be involved with children while they are exploring social media? Discuss here.
