Depression Treatments for Children

Depression in children can be treated through psychotherapy or antidepressants. Read about the depression treatments for children.

Childhood is considered as the best age in a person’s life. It is the most wonderful phase of our life where we are kept away from the hassles of life. Stress, responsibilities, anxiety, tension, competition etc, are things we are kept away from. Fun and play is what childhood is all about. Who could ever think that this lovely phase of life can turn dreadful too?

Many parents do not even know that little children too can suffer from depression today. Depression is often associated with adults, but children are no exception to it anymore. Continuous sadness can lead to depression in children.  Depression affects the mental and physical stability of the child. The happiness could turn into prolonged sadness and irritation.  It affects their life with family and friends.

There are certain warning signs which can tell you if your child is depressed. Proper medication and treatment can help your child recover depression in an effective manner. Here are a few treatments for treating childhood depression.

It is crucial to find a good child psychiatrist to evaluate your child’s condition. On the basis of evaluation the doctor prescribes a recovery treatment which could be Psychotherapy and Antidepressant medication.

Psychotherapy

There are different types of psychotherapy treatments which are very effective. Cognitive behavioural therapy is best for treating depression in children. This therapy helps the child in rectifying all the negative thoughts in its mind.

Generally, depressive children have a very pessimistic and unhealthy outlook towards life and themselves based on their bad experiences. In this case, cognitive behavioural therapy helps them create a positive outlook towards life and promotes optimistic coping behaviours to face situations. This helps them reduce depression. Family support can act as a boost for relieving depression as it helps the child recover quickly with the help of love and support. It can also reduce the chances of a relapse.

Antidepressant Medication

This treatment has helped in improving the chances of relieving childhood depression. It is the next best option for treating depression in children when psychotherapy alone does not help in nursing over changing mood swings successfully.

Dealing with Constant Mood Swings - Constantly changing mood swings can be hazardous for depressed children if left untreated. Untreated mood swings can lead to suicidal tendencies in the child. However, research suggests that antidepressant medications could increase suicidal behaviour and thoughts in children. Hence, it is very important for the doctor to evaluate the child perfectly and know the risks involved before advising antidepressants.

Dealing with Severe Depression Symptoms - Still, antidepressants can be very beneficial for treating depressed children who have very severe depression symptoms for which psychotherapy alone could not be very effective. Moreover, for those children who are suffering from chronic or persistent depression could respond well to antidepressants.

Also children who have had a family member responding well to antidepressants. Antidepressant medications work effectively for children who do not have active psychotic illness or bipolar depression. Children with lack of time and access to psychotherapy sessions can opt for antidepressant medication.

Psychotherapy and antidepressant treatment if continued even after recovering from depression can be very helpful as it will reduce the possibility of a relapse.

With the above mentioned treatments children can recover from depression quickly without any danger. Remember that depression is treatable, early diagnosis and perfect treatment can help in recuperating with depression efficiently.
