Are you a Stranger to Your Child?
Life today is spent at a dizzying speed, with people trying to balance work, fun, social interaction, and various other duties all at the same time. People today have a tendency to do a lot more activities. For example, there are many people who work hard throughout the week and then use the weekend to party their hearts out. Married couples often use the weekend for some time with each other, away from work and other responsibilities.
But in such a high-pace life, children are often neglected. Though this is not usually done on purpose, there are many ways in which parents could ensure that you pull out time to spend with your kids as well. Let's see why you must avoid becoming a stranger to your child at all costs.
Why You Should Spend Time with Your Child
Children, in their growing years, are a curious lot. They go through a variety of emotions, most of which need guidance from an adult. For example, if your child is being bullied at school and you are never around, who is he supposed to discuss it with? Children need to be counseled by a parent in case he faces such a situation. And in the absence of one, he will only keep running away from his fear. His sense of loneliness will also make him identify with you less.
But it is not only negative incidents that your child may face. There may be a lot of important moments in his life where he will feel the need of a parent. For example, when he needs encouragement before an exam, when he wins a competition, when he wants to know what he should wear to a party. It is a parent who becomes his best friend in such situations, advising and assisting him through it all.
These are the small gestures which make a family a family, and as a parent, you must realize the value of a close-knit family. Being caught up in a busy life is no excuse to let your child grow up with insecurities, fears and loneliness.
How to Spend Time with Your Child
If a party is important to you, spending time with your child is even more important. This is because if you truly evaluate the consequences of both, you will realize that the time spent with your child will truly be more valuable. Think of it as a long term investment!
Find out if your child has plans or events coming up so you will not end up missing them because of your personal schedule. Companies today are quite demanding with their employees but even they accommodate an early request for leave. Also, make sure you spend at least an hour or two with your children everyday, so you can be in touch with their lives. It is important that your child share his daily activities with you, so that he feels your presence at all times. Also, he is more likely to discuss his problems if he has an effective communication system with you.
Remember that there is no need to completely give up a social life altogether. After all, everybody deserves time on their own. It is only important that you be a good judge of any situation, and schedule things properly. For example, if you spend enough time with your kids, you will feel much better when you take a vacation with your partner, and your child will not mind it either. So go ahead and spend time with your kids! It goes a long, long way in bringing happiness and peace to your home.
