10 Ways to Be a Better Parent

It is essential to follow positive parenting techniques to be a better parent. Let us take a look at the top 10 ways to be a better parent.

Parenting a child is a huge responsibility. The way you treat your child, as he or she is growing up, impacts the future of your child to a great extent. Whatever they see, hear and learn during those vital years of childhood is exactly what they will be doing all their lives.

Here are certain parenting techniques you need to know and learn so that your child has the correct upbringing.

1. Avoid Great Expectations

It is natural for parents to expect your child to succeed in his or her life. But that does not mean that you impose your dreams and sky-high expectations on them. You should know where your child’s capability ends. Depending on that, build your expectations. Do not pressurize them.

2. Avoid Lying to Your Children

Do not, under any circumstances, resort to lying to get your child to do something. They might work for a certain period of time but when they realise the truth, their trust in you is going to diminish and slowly disappear, creating problems.

3. Keep the “No” at Bay

Do not always reply to your child’s requests with a ‘NO’. This creates a sense of anger and resentment in them which has bad consequences. If you cannot fulfil their request, explain why you cannot do so. At other times, give them what they want, so that they know that their requests are important to you.

4. Get Rid of the Empty Threats

When your child does not listen to you, do not use empty threats. Say something firm and realistic so that they immediately do it knowing that they could lose out on something important.

5. Do Not Resort to Hitting

Indian parents usually bring their children up by the hand. But that is dangerous because later in life they think it normal to hit their peers or family members to get what they need. Unless the situation is severe, avoid hitting. Your words should be powerful enough.

6. Teach Them to Apologise

You will expect your child to apologise for their mistakes, only if you have to properly teach them to learn. When they see you not apologising to them, when you clearly are in the wrong, they think that is the way of life. So, say sorry when you need to; so that your child realises the importance of apologies.

7. Communicate With Them

Do not let there be a communication gap. Understand your child’s mind, what they think, what they need. Do not pressurize them to do something they do not like. Understand their insecurities and fears and care for them accordingly.

8. Be Precise

When scolding them for their mistakes, do not launch into a lecture. Be crisp and precise so that you know your words have been drilled into their head. Long talks often lead to disinterest and disrespect. So be concise.

9. Spend Time

Spend some valuable time with your children. Do not neglect them. It helps you to create a strong foundation with your child and teach them the ways of life. It also helps you gain their trust.

10. Do Not Fight in Front Of them

Seeing parents fight, instils fear and insecurity in a child. So do not fight in front of them. Solve your issues behind closed door. A happy family is the biggest secret behind a perfect child.

Parenting is an important thing. A child’s behaviour pattern is formed according to the manner in which, you as a parent, teach them to.  It is the most powerful tool for the formation of a better future. So improve your skills at parenting so that you can become a proud parent in the future and ensure a happy life for your child.
