How to Avoid Being an Overprotective Parent

By being overprotective, parents severely hamper the development of self esteem and confidence in children. Such children are unable to do most of the things independently. Therefore, it is essential to avoid being an overprotective for right development of children. Here is how you can do so.

It’s quite natural for the parents to protect their children especially when the child is undergoing some tough situation. But parents may cross their limit and start protecting their children too much. Over protection is not all good for the children. When parents get into the habit of over protecting their children, they find it hard to get out of it so it is important for the parents to realize if they are giving too much protection to their children. Here are some ways to avoid being an overprotective parent.

Parents Should be Clear About the Goal

Parents must have clear idea about the goals while they raise their child. Parents’ job is to help their kids grow up in such manner that the kids could function without their parents when they grow up. Parents are there to love and protect their child but that does not mean that children would never face failure, disappointment or agony in their life. So, the parents’ have the goal to make their children self competent. When parents are clear about this goal, they would never do anything that leads to overprotection of their children.

Analyze the Motive of Being Overprotective

A parent can be overprotective about his or her child for various reasons. It could be because their parents were overprotective and they find it the right way to raise kids. Other reasons for over protection could be that parents cannot keep patience; the parents do not want their children to face rejection.

Apart from the above there are parents who do not want their kids to work extra or the parents do not have enough idea about the capability of their children. E.g. there are times when we continuously keep our children under watch when they are playing outside so that they do not get dirty. If they get dirty, we will have to work extra in cleaning the dirt. It is quite natural on parents’ part but parents must realize their over protection will take away the pleasure of playing with mud and sand from the child.

Open Up Communication with the Child

Parents are always bothered about the safety and security of their children and that is why parents restrain their children from going to a new place, going out with their friends or going out for a trekking or camping activity. It is better that parents communicate to their children from time to time and keep an eye on them so that they can assess the capacity of their child. Knowing the strengths and limitations of the child is mandatory for parents so that their children can be brought up in the right way.

Let the Child Learn From Mistakes

Unless and until we allow our children to make mistakes they will not be able to rectify them. Parents should allow their children to learn from mistakes. There could be issues like participating in a recitation competition or struggling to adjust in the new school, it is better if parents keep themselves away from the child and allow the child to face the situation he or she is facing. If a child is making mistake that does not mean the child will not be able to recover. Self learning is the best way to learn and it will remain in the mind of the child forever.

Every parent wants his or her children to grow up as an independent, responsible and confident person. To ensure this happens; parents should stop being overprotective to their children. Then only the judgment capacity and self confidence of the child will develop. The above measures are helpful for parents so that they can restrain themselves from being over protective.
